TEACHING READING SKILLS
• Reading is the most important skill for the learners of English
as a second language.
• The objective of teaching reading is to help the learner to get
information from the printed page effectively, rapidly and with
full understanding and to make learners understand the
process and develop the skill of reading.
• Reading is a process of sight, sound and sense. It needs the
coordination of eyes and brain to understand the written
message knowledge of the linguistic and extra linguistic factors
is essential. Reading is a prediction-based activity.


Some basic skills for reading
• Activities to drill reading comprehension is implemented/conducted
through 3 steps: Pre- reading, while- reading and post-reading.

Preliminary activities
+ Present the text/passage: provide students with important information.
 Presentation requires brief introduction, make students interested in
the text to help students have connection with their own background
knowledge.


+ Ways to introduce the text:
* Lead-in: Teacher begins the text by introducing information to help
students recognize what they are going to read
(E.g: Today, we are going to read about ….)
Then Teacher let students to guess the meaning of words relevant
to the text.
* Using visual aid ( pictures, videos,…) in order to make questions related to


the passage such as “What are people in the picture doing now?”
• Explain vocabulary by using real objects, translating into Vietnamese
• Give new structures into the lesson if they appear
• Instruct some question


While reading
• The most common methods are used:
+ Silent reading
+ Checking students’ understanding: Teacher lets students ask
and answer the teacher’s questions in pair or groups
+ Teacher’s oral question by (what/when/where, Yes/no
questions, alternative questions.
+ Give some extra handouts


Post - reading
• Teacher asks students to recall the content of the text.
• Summaries the text
• Discuss
• Give feedback
