Tet, or known as Lunar New Year Eve in some countries, is considered as one of
the most important holidays in Vietnam. This holiday takes place on the first day of
January according to the Lunar Calendar.
It is a festival for families and relatives to gather around, celebrates and enjoy
themselves after a hard-working year. It is also a chance to show worship to our
ancestors, elder in the family and more over the respect to our gods for helping,
blessing us in that year. Because of its importance, the preparation for the holidays
must be careful and circumspect. The first thing every family has to do is to clean
up their house as a way to warmly greet the upcoming good things. The house is
decorated with peach blossoms or apricot blossoms, a little bit of red color around
the house because red is often symboled for luck. Some families even buy parallel
sentences with red background and yellow words as a lucky charm, it depends on
the family circumstance to buy the kind of parallel sentences, many people want to
be wealthy they will buy sentences related to money, ...
Secondly, rituals are indispendable to Vietnamese people. As Tet is a chance to
show respect to the Gods, so going to pagodas and temples is neccessary for
everyone. Vietnamese people often have a proverb: “Gratitude is a sign of noble
souls”, so they always remember to worship the ancestors. And Vietnamese are
kind of supertitious, that’s why they go to temples and pagodas to pray for luck,
health, and wealth for the upcomin year.
Last of all, Tet can’t be Tet without traditional foods such as spring rolls, “banh
chung”, boiled chicken, ... Spring rolls is one of the most famous and required food
for Tet holidays, so is “banh chung”. On the altar, Vietnamese also put a group of
fruits, contain five main kind of fruits such as: bananas, chilli, orange, pomelo,
dragon fruit, ... Depending on the regions we choose the fruit we should use.
So that is how Vietnamese people prepare for the Lunar New Year – Tet holidays,
and there are many more customs about Tet you should find out too.
