Topic 1: Garbage

1. Why do some people throw garbage on the street?

I struggle to get my head around this one, it makes me livid. I believe this trait to be attributed to:
pure laziness, ignorance and a self-absorbed manner which makes these people believe that it is their
prerogative to act exactly as they please, and let other people do their dirty work with absolutely no
compensation.

1. Why do some people throw garbage on
the street?

I struggle to get my head around this one,

Livid: extremely angry

Trait:a particular quality in your personality

it makes me livid. I believe this trait to be
attributed to: pure laziness, ignorance and

a self-absorbed manner: only concerned about or interested in yourself

a self-absorbed manner which makes

Prerogative: a right or advantage belonging to a particular person

these people believe that it is their
prerogative to act exactly as they please,

Compensation: something, that somebody gives you because they have
hurt you,

and let other people do their dirty work
with absolutely no compensation.

2. How do you feel when you see people throw garbage on the street? Do you stop them?

It is exasperating. It really gets on my wick because it requires such a miniscule amount of effort to make a small diversion
towards a bin. In this city there is always a place for rubbish within eyesight, yet some people are still too self-centred and
idle to even make the slightest effort. The reason it frustrates me to such an extent, is the damage it is doing to our local
environment, and the planet’s ecosystems

2. How do you feel when you see people throw garbage on the street? Do you stop them?

Even organisms which live at the depths of the ocean, thousands of miles from the closest human
settlement have been found to have plastic molecules in their digestive tract, the cause of which can be
directly linked to human activity. It is extraordinarily unjust that such lifeforms should have to suffer
from our negligence.

3. What do you do with garbage when you see it on the street? Do you pick up the garbage?

No, I am ashamed to say that I very rarely pick up garbage from the street. I think the act of doing so is highly

commendable, and I have the utmost respect for every individual who goes out of their way to make our local
environment a cleaner place. For me it is a matter of hygiene, if there was a handwash station on every street
corner then maybe I would! But unfortunately, that is not a realistic expectation.

4. Do you recycle paper and plastic?
Yes, I do. I like the way that recycling waste gives me a feeling of contentment at the fact that I
am doing my bit to protect the environment as best possible. I also recycle metal, glass and
anything else which can be reused. Including sending less-fashionable clothes and obsolete
small-appliances to charity where they can have a second life, being appreciated by people less
fortunate than myself.

Obsolete: no longer used because something new has
been invented
Fortunate:

5. What do you do to protect your city’s environment? Have you participated in any activities related to
environmental protection?
I like to do my bit to reduce the level of pollution and waste in any way possible. When I can, I will
forego use of my moped to walk or take public transport instead, I also work to reduce my carbon
footprint as much as possible by making small changes like refusing plastic bags in favour of a reusable
one, or using air-conditioning as infrequently as is reasonably practicable.

Topic 2: Travel
1. Do you like traveling?
Yes, I relish travelling, I think it’s a tremendous way to expand your mind and absorb the little nuggets
of wisdom that you pick up by interacting with people from different cultures.

2. What is the best place you have ever visited?
In terms of scenery, definitely Barbados, it was an absolute utopia, an enchantingly picturesque
tropical paradise with stunning natural beauty around every corner. I was highly fortuitous to be able
to experience scuba diving there! It was like entering another universe, so tranquil. No words in my
vocabulary could ever match the phenomenal splendour which I encountered.

everything is perfect

tropical paradise
Fortuitous: happening by chance, especially a
lucky chance that brings a good result
Tranquil: quiet and peaceful
Splendour: grand and impressive beauty

3. What are the difficulties during a trip?
Language barriers are categorically the most exasperating factor when travelling. Disparities in culture
and norms perturb me too, but disparities in language are certainly the most substantial impediment.
The constant struggle to decipher signs and communicate with locals is endlessly vexing.

4. Do you like jobs that let you travel?
Absolutely, one of my major qualms in life is the feeling that I am squandering the little time I have on
this planet, cooped-up in the same office, village or town. When the world has so many other
magnificent destinations for me to explore. To be able to travel for work, rather than having my travel
time constrained to a fortnight of holiday per annum, would be an absolute dream.

5. What kind of cities do you like to travel to?
My personal preference is to travel to either the most modern, or the most beautiful cities. There is
something alluring about the neon-lit skyscrapers of a modern metropolis like Tokyo. But equally,
there is a more subtle, but equally exquisite beauty to be found in the aesthetics of ancient
architecture in places like Venice and Rome.
