A. BACKGROUND
I. THE REASONS FOR THE STUDY

Our country has entered the period of integration with the international
community, especially our country was officially a member of the WTO (World
Trade Organization). The decisive factor for success in the development of the
country is Vietnamese human resource which is a comprehensive development of
both quantity and quality on the basis of increasingly high knowledge standard.
Therefore, the Party and State have prioritized development education and training
of our country , considered "Education is a top national policy" as well as education
and training is also conducted changed from position education and training
standards to teaching and learning: student-centered, in order to contribute
effectively to the preparatory process of the national workforce in the coming years.
To meet the new educational goals, rather textbook program of general education has
been a positive change: focus innovation of teaching methods, implementation of
teaching and learning based on active student under the organization and proper
guidance, flexibility of teachers to develop independent thinking creatively, helping
formulate methods and self-learning needs and fostering interest in learning, build
confidence, joy learning.
Today, foreign language courses, especially English has occupied the most

important position in the foreign relations of the world. English helps us to study,
communicate with foreigners in all fields: culture, politics, education, health, etc.
People learn to be proficient and fluent in the language skills listening, speaking,
reading and writing. Especial gifted students, skill listening is very important. In
the English contests in Dong Son District as well Thanh Hoa Province, Talent
students have had listening tests so that they all are always nervous, so that I have
based on the collected experience of myself and the knowledge gained through the
references, I write this research to contribute to Kinds of listening tests for the
ninth gifted students in Dong Son District.
II. RESEACH PURPOSES.

Implementation of the programs of teaching and learning of English in junior
high school level was compiled from the viewpoint of communication, considered
the formation and development of communication skills: Listening-Speaking Reading - Writing is the ultimate goal of the teaching process.
Nowadays, In the English contests of the ninth gifted students in Dong Son
District, There are some kinds of the listening tests and the points of them promote
about 20 % in the total points of the tests. The talent students who want to the
highest points in the tests have to reach the listening tests.
Being a an English expert of Dong Son Office of Education and Training, I
have always noticed the quality of listening skill for the ninth gifted students in
Dong Son District. As the result, Dong Son Gifted English Teams is one of the
highest teams in Thanh Hoa Province .
Therefore, at the beginning of the school year I have to plan for myself
towards the teachers in junior high school have noticed to teach listening skill for
students. That is the reason I write the subject concerned.
III. RESEACH SUBJECTS.
The ninth English gifted students in Dong Son District.

IV. RESEACH METHODS.
To implement its measures effectively, I have combined the use of the following
measures:
1. Methodology argued exploiting scientific information about teaching methods
effectively through books and documents related, join classes on teaching methods,
thematic classes, special through regular refresher courses of Ministry of Education
and Training, Department of Education and Training organized home province.
2. Making directedly listening tests for the giftedstudents in Dong Son District from
choosing top 20 to top 10 (school year: 2017-2018).
3. Reference books, the teachers of English in Dong Son District as well as Thanh
Hoa Province.
4


4. Methodology products: through the results of the tests for the gifted students.
B. PROBLEM SOLVING
I. THEORETICAL BASES.
Listening skill in English is very important in the process of learning and in the
English contests for the talent students. DongSon is a small district in Thanh Hoa
Province so that choosing the English Talent Team is difficult. We have to choose 8
times: from class eight to class nine; From twenty talent students to ten gifted
students.
Although there have been five parts (Pronunciation, Language focus, Reading,
Writing, Listening) in the English contests, The gifted Students who reach the
highest the result are the one to finish the best listening parts. In fact, teaching and
learning English in Dong Son District, the student do not attend listening skill a lo,
so that they have had difficulties in doing tests and communicating with everyone.
In the school year (2017-2018) Dong Son District Education and Training
Departure has paid attention to teaching in Secondary Schools in order to improve
the quality of Students’ listening skill and Listening tests are officially used in tests

for students and gifted students.
II. THE SITUATION OF THE ISSUE.
Listening skill for the ninth gifted students in Dong Son District are facing a lot
of issues, caused by the things as follows:
1. FOR THE TEACHERS.
Teachers usually have to change their methods especially teaching listening
skill. In English 9,there are many listening tasks which are very difficult for
students so that the teachers must give suitable methods to students; guide students
to listen and practice from easy activities to difficult ones.
Teachers use teaching techniques and teaching aids and cassette or CD
perfectly. Moreover, they notice the time for one activity (avoiding guiding students

this activity too much time or that activity one less time). They give students to
listen to CD by recorded native speakers.
Teachers also need to have sweet voice to attract students and make English
atmosphere in class.
2. FOR THE TALENT STUDENTS.
Students must prepare before listening lesson by using reference books, look
up new words in the listening lessons in English 9. Students have good knowledge
about English. They practice listening in English lessons every day with their
teachers and their classmates. Moreover they must practice listening themselves at
home by listening to English songs, watching English news on television, reading
English stories, doing many kinds of exercises. Learning vocabulary and structures
by heart.
III. SOLUTION
In every listening test, I always pay attend to gifted students’ learning process
and the contents of listening conversation or texts in English 9. It not only helps gifted

students review the things they have learned but do their listening tests well and also
use their knowledge to communicate everyday. There are three listening tasks in each
listening test with twenty points so I specially noticed some different kinds such as:
Listening and fill true (T) or false (F); Listen and write no more one/ two/ three words;
Listening and choose the best answers; Listen and fill the information or answer the
short questions; And in this theme, I would like to introduce some kinds of listening
tests for the ninth gifted students in Dong Son District.
1. THE FIRST LISTENING TESTS FOR TOP 25 OF THE GIFTED
STUDENTS.
1-1. LISTENING (15 pts)
Section 1: You will hear a man telephoning a library to find out about joining. Li
sten and complete the form below. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS/
OR A NUMBER for each answer . You will hear the recording TWICE.

Do you like fast food? Lots of people ….(1)…..but I think a lot of it’s quite tasty – as

convenient and to be everywhere. Of course they’re not the same as real restaurants. I

IV. THE TESTED RESULTS
In this school year, I have been giving listening tests in choosing the gifted
students of Dong Son District. From choosing top 20 gifted students 10 top 15
gifted students and the last top 10 gifted students. As the result, the gifted student
team of Dong Son have reached a high result. All of top 10 have had 15 pts/ 15pts
of listening tests. In every test of listening, I always use three kinds of listening
tests to improve listening skill for the students. I found that these listening tests
have provided the students with the comfortable and effective way of learning
English not only in the classroom but also in anywhere. The students feel excited

and they are eager to wait for English classes. They can understand the lessons
more deeply and more naturally. They have become better and better at listening
skill and more self confident in communicating in English with each other. They
either listen English in the class or outside the school confidently. They not only
take part in listening and speaking clubs organized by the teacher but also by
themselves. They even take use of their recess to communicate in English by
listening and singing English songs. Their listening skill has improved so quickly.
Based on the results of the students’ testing listening skill, I have the results of
classification ability of listening and communicating of the gifted students in
Dong Son District (top 10) in this school year as the followings:

C. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDTIONS
Learning a language is a process that requires students’ continuous efforts
and listening skill especially creates fun learning atmosphere, enhance relaxation
and maintain their interest in learning. At the same time, they increase the
motivation, encourage the students to be active to participate in learning activities.
A student who has good listening skill will be confident in communicating
English with everyone. In modern life, English is very necessary for us (not only
for our studying, but our job and also our every day life….). For the gifted students,
Good listening skill also enriches vocabulary and develop the language elements
such as pronunciation, spelling, reading, speaking.... These factors are very

important to them before practicing communication skills. Good listening skill
provides the gifted students with the opportunities to communicate in the context of
real communication to improve their speaking skill.
One of the difficulties that most of the teachers of foreign languages in
general, and the teachers of English in particular have experienced while teaching
listening skill, It is the time taken. Usually the listening part is held in the
classroom does not take much time, which only takes 3 minutes to 5 minutes, or 7
minutes. Featuring that, classes in Vietnam are often very crowded, whether
teaching listening skill in groups or in pairs is suitable and effective for all the
students in the class to practice listeing skill is a problem. This shows that the
selection of appropriate language games is very important, which helps the students
overcome the difficulty in listening English.
In short, using listening skill in the tests for the talent students brings
efficiency in teaching and learning English. The teachers should notice listening

skill as an indispensable part of the teaching process, constantly organize practicing
listening for the students to participate in class, create the atmosphere of English
learning fun, relaxation, enthusiasm and enjoyment. In addition, the teachers should
focus on the selection of suitable listening skill for the student levels. Teaching
listening skill will become more and more regularly. These are not beneficial for
both teachers and learners. In oder to get success in using language games in
teaching English, these are important things to both teachers and students.
1. For the teachers:
- Must have a deep understanding about the lessons.
- Must refer many kinds of books, documents.
- Must be responsible, enthusiastic for the students.
- Must prepare the means and appliances of teaching carefully.
2. For the students

- Must prepare the lesson carefully before class.
- Must meet all kinds of books for class service.
- Must obey the instructions and guidance of the teacher.
3. For the leaders
The current means and teaching aids for the English subject are not still
supplied enough. So the leaders should equip adequate equipments such as radios,
tapes, pictures, projector and especially functional rooms in order to successfully
carry out the objective of teaching and learning English in this stage.
The above is my own experience in giving kinds of listening tests for the
ninth gifted students in Dong Son District in teaching English to improve listening
skill for the gifted students in Dong Son District . But it can not be mistakes that I
would definitely present can’t help avoiding limitations. I look forward to all the

colleagues’ constructive feedback in order to improve the efficiency of class time,
contribute to improving the quality of teaching and learning English.
