1. INTRODUCTION
1.1. The reason of selecting the topic
Today we are witnessing the interaction and interdependence among
nations in the world of information, science, technology, education and culture.
In this context, English acts as an important communication tool for the
country's economic, scientific and technological development and regional
integration, as well as for intercultural exchanges countries in the region and in
the world.
Nowadays, Tinh Gia where my school is clocated has The Nghi Son
Economic Zone. The Nghi Son Economic Zone was established in 2006 over
almost 18,612 hectares in 12 communes in Tinh Gia District, Thanh Hoa
Province. The zone was designed for different industries with priority given to
heavy industry. Eight years plus after it began operation, the Nghi Son
Economic Zone has attracted 94 investment projects totaling US$16.8 billion in
registered capital, including 15 ongoing foreign direct investment (FDI) projects
with a combined capital of almost US$10 billion. The economic zone boasts
many large-scale projects including the 5.8 million tonnes per year Cong Thanh
cement plant; the one million tonnes of steel billet per year Nghi Son steel plant;
Nghi Son 1 Thermoelectric Plant, Nghi Son 2 Thermoelectric Plant and some
other power projects with a total capacity of 2,400MW; and the US$9 billion
Nghi Son refinery project. It means that knowing English in here is very
important for the people who want to get good jobs because there are many
foreign companies. This is the reason why we had intention of establishing an
English club with the purpose of helping our students use English masterly and
develop their language skills.
The ability to communicate in English is one of the basic skills that need
to be established for the young generation in Vietnam. Therefore, English
language teaching and learning in general, junior high school in particular,
should focus on developing communication skills in English for students.
Teaching and learning English at the high level, helps students expand their
vision, enrich their life experiences.

Thus, to help students develop their ability to communicate, we need to
train our students to be brave and self-confident in learning English; At the same
time, we have to provide life skills for them as well as create good conditions for
them to develop comprehensively. They need more opportunities, more time,
and need to have an environment to practice English, to meet with teachers and
friends more. It is the interaction with friends that will give them the confidence,
encouragement in communication and these opportunities that can only be
activities outside class time!
However, throughout the extracurricular activities of the team, I have
discovered that many students are able to communicate in English. They can
give presentations, rhetoric, exchange, Q & A, introduce themselves in English
1

in a natural way. They want to develop their abilities, but they have little chance
to show their strengths. Then why we don’t try to give them more opportunities
to develop, to multiply the typical passion for learning English as well as attract
many prospective students with the ability to communicate English well.
From the experience above, I think I have to find ways to organize and maintain
effectively the English Club at my school and fortunately, this year, Nghi Son
Refinery and Petrochemicals LLC supported us to establish an English Club in
October 2017.
Through the operation of the English club at the school in one year, I have
learned some experiences as well as have many concerns and thoughts in trying
to find better, practical and more effective solutions to maintain and promote the
effectiveness of the English club, and how to improve students' listening and
speaking skills, facilitating the teaching and learning of English in the school.
The above reasons have inspired me to conduct my initiative with the title “
Some experiences in establishing, organizing and maintaining effectively the
English club at Tinh Gia 3 High Schools.”

2

- The method of studying theory.
- The method of investigating.
- Applying the topic to establish, organize and maintain the clubs at Tinh Gia 3

high school.
- Comparison, collation and summary of the result, effect of the topic.
2. PROBLEM SOLVING
2.1. Rationale and reality
2.1.1. Rationale :
2.1.1.1 The development of the idea of setting up the English Club:
History has shown and proven to us that human beings have been known
to organize community activities in groups, according to their tribes, for a long
time. That has brought about many effects and promotion until today. On the
mass media or through local reality, nowhere do we see the appearance of clubs
such as club farmer, gardeners club, club youth, women, clubs who do not have
a third child ... etc. This means that the form of club activities has long been and
has many practical effects in human life and development.
In some schools there are organized clubs such as the lovers of
mathematics clubs, literary clubs, English clubs, chess clubs .... This club has
promoted the learning movement among students.
Through the actual time to attend the music, art is very easy to notice that
students are very passionate, interested. Seeing the students drunk singing,
drawing I asked myself "Why are students so passionate? Why do students get
tired of studying English? Why do not we stimulate the spirit of passion, do not
create the pleasure in the study of the students? "
2.1.1.2. Roles of the English club at schools :
Club activities are one of the activities that contribute to innovate teaching
methods in schools.
The club is a school-based activity that is organized and managed by
teachers, under the direction of the Board of Education, giving students the right
to rest and positive education, encouraging students to improve their knowledge,
creating an environment for them to develop, moral training, developing life
skills. This is an important orientation contributing to the improvement of
comprehensive education.

From the above, it is clear that the Club plays an important role in
enhancing the effectiveness of comprehensive education in the school.
From the above, I determined that the organization and maintenance of
the English Club's performance is one of the key tasks of the school year, as well
as a practical activity for students to practice. The ability to communicate in
English, fun, healthy entertainment, moral training, life skills development,
helping to develop the whole.
2.1.2. Reality : Current situation of English speaking ability of students in
the course teaching
Innovating teaching methods in English in junior high school is the
development of communication skills for students, especially the method of
3

teaching Listening, Speaking skills. Optimal method helps students practice
these skills. However, due to objective and subjective conditions, my students
are limited in English speaking classes.
They are shy, not aggressive, afraid of wrong, passive in the practice.
Probably because the time is not enough to help them have opportunity to
practice, the results of these classes often do not meet the expectations. Even the
good students are also very reluctant as well as lack of confidence. Although
they have real talent, passive environment is hard to excite the interest of the
students. Therefore, their passion is not satisfied, their strengths have little
chance to show.
When surveying, surveying the psychology of 40 students in grade 11
years when learning the Speaking (Speaking), I obtained the results as follows:

Confident

Less confident

Not confident

5 students – 12.5 %

15 students – 37.5%

20 students – 50 %

From the above results, when learning to practice, most students are timid,
lacking in confidence, resulting in unsatisfactory results. Their ability to
communicate is difficult to develop well.
2.2. Measure implementation
2.2.1. Organizations.
- In order to form an English club in the school, the first thing is to have the
direction, the support of the leaderships and the school board combining with
the determination of teachers in the team subject.
- The leader must develop the organizational structure and activities then submit
it to the school leaders for consideration, supplement and approval.
- Within the subject group, there must be agreement on the assignment and the
program of action.
2.2.1.1 The organizational structure includes:
- Head of the club: Deputy principal.
- Vice chairman of the club: in charge of professional field is the professional
team leader.
- Vice President in charge of entertainment or one of the teacher from the subject
group.
- 03 leaders representing blocks 10,11,12.
2.2.1.2 Tasks:
- Head of the club: Giving general direction and management, working with two

deputy heads to develop the program of activities, suggest ideas, seek the
guidance of the superior leaders.
- Vice President responsible for professional: regularly monitor the situation or
the actual needs of students in the school in the subject of English, from which
4

elaborate each specific program, with the topics closing to the main lessons in
the textbooks to enhance learning efficiency, stimulate the learning spirit of the
students. Collaborate with other members of the board to develop club activities,
assign assignments, and help team leaders work in teams; mainly run and
manage the club meetings.
- Vice President in charge of the arts: The teacher in charge of this task is
responsible for the training of performances such as singing, dancing, drama for
students. Collaborate with other members in the development of the program.
Head of decoration, music for the event or warm-up activities of the meetings.
Support the Vice chairman of the club in running and managing as well as
teaching lessons in the meetings.
- Group leaders: manage, monitor, assign, and assist the team members during
their activities. Represent the members of the team to make suggestions, reflect
the needs ... for responsible teachers in the club.
- Membership: The members of the club must comply with the assignment and
direction of the team leaders and responsible teachers in the club. Ensure proper
implementation of club schedules and activities. Must have membership card,
membership fee.
2.2.2. Program of activities:
- The program of the club must be in line with the students' ability in each class,
the focus of the speech activities must be close to the surrounding life, must be
realistic and stick to the main curriculum.
- The program for the whole year organizers must develop and submit to the

guidance of leaders and administrators from the beginning of the year.
- The club has 8 meetings and 3 big events in each year. Each meeting has its
own topic. The organizer must make plans before 5 days to prepare for the
events well.
- The program of the club must have a combination of professional training and
other activities and entertainment games. The program must really appeal to
students.
- The program of activities must constantly change, improve or renew activities
to constantly improve the efficiency of the club.
- In the club activities, the organizers must pay attention to the form of
decoration and the music and instruments for each program.
2.2.2.1 Topics
An English Learning Club is a terrific way to improve your spoken English
skills. English Learning Clubs have the added benefits of being a great way to
make new friends, learn about topics you might not have been aware of, and
even hone your debating skills. It’s not necessary to devote the entirety of your
club meetings to debate, but it can be a stimulating and though-provoking way
to spend two and half hours or so each month.
Here are some suggested topics:
1. Appearance and Character
2. Mid-Autumn festival

2.2.2.2 Lesson plan
Before having a meeting, the fist things we had to do was making a lesson plan.

All those who are in the teaching line will vouch for the importance of a lesson
plan.
A lesson plan is a concise and organized structure which provides answers to
important questions about how a teacher can maintain a standard pattern of
teaching.

7

Lesson planning provides a step-by-step guide to teachers to delve deep into
what he/she is teaching, how the teaching should progress, and the contents of
the lecture and eventually whether the students understand what is being taught.
Alongside planning for these criteria which are crucial for a comprehensive
learning, a lesson plan benefits teachers in more ways than you can imagine.
And these are some examples of our lesson plans.

2.2.3. Other conditions:
- Membership cards must be issued to each member. Board members and team
leaders must closely manage membership cards.
- Membership cards will be issued to new members each year.
12

- The program of activities for each meeting must be approved by the Board of
Directors and informed in advance to all members of the club for preparation.
- In the large demonstration programs, the organizers need to invite the leaders
of the majors, unions and parents to attend to seek the support of both spiritual
and material.
- In order to enhance mutual understanding and learning, the club's organizing
committee should contact the delegates of the clubs of the participating schools;
At the same time, we should organize the students to participate in club
activities of their friends.
- In order to keep the club running efficiently it is necessary to have membership
dues and dues are built on the basis of members' monthly dues and the support
of the board and other organizations in the school. The collection and payment
of membership dues must be publicly democratic.
- All programs and images must be retained to educate the next generation.
2.2.4. Club Members:
To develop the Club, the first job is to choose the students from 10th to 12th
grade who have passion, love English as a member of the Club. This is an
important step in establishing the Club.

In order to attract more students to join the Club, I and my colleague who are
mainly responsible for the running club ask the Communist Youth League’s
support to organize an meeting all students who are interested in English and
have ability of using English well. Before the meeting we assigned the English
teachers in each class and took advantage of the first 15 minutes of class, 5
minutes, break time ... to communicate and promote students understand the
purpose and benefits of the English Club. We make it clear that this is a useful
playground for English learners. At the first meeting they were reserved more
than 100 students participated.
At this meeting we made small conversations with these students and then
choose 40 students who are capable of speaking as well as listening English at
the medium level. After that, the representatives from Nghi Son Refinery and
Petrochemicals LLC held another meeting to interview 40 chosen students and
made the final list with 20 students. Because this is the first time my school has
an English club so that we want to choose the students who can know how to
use English to train the leaders for the next years.
2.2.5. Rules of the Club:
Any organization should have rules, rules and regulations in place to govern and
maintain operations.
Based on the regulations on organization and operation of the Club, our team
has discussed and agreed 5 common regulations with members of the Club as
follows:
- Club members are students who are interested in English, volunteering to join
the club, having parents' comments.
- Do not stop training and progress in learning English, always strive to have
good behavior. Ensure style, uniform according to the regulations of the Club.
13

- Full participation in club activities, no more than 2 consecutive times / year,

full fee.
- Abide by the rules and assignments of the Advisory Board and Board of
Directors.
2.2.6. Distribute membership application form and membership card:
To express the individuality of students who voluntarily join the Club, they have
an application form to join the Club and signed by their parents.
Each member is provided with a membership card (badge with a strap), printed
with a school logo and have personal photos so the club easy to follow, closely
manage each member at the same time create more fun for the students.
To be officially a member of the Club, all students meet all of the above
conditions at the Club's launching ceremony.
2.2.7. The uniform of the club:
At the same time, to create a distinct identity for the club, we have to create a
separate outfit for the members. The club consists of a shirt, a hat, a badge with
a strap. ...
Through a student poll, the results show that 100% of the students are interested
in and co-opt for the uniforms for the club. Club leaders conduct the meeting
and go to the right for the students themselves to design and choose the color
and uniforms of the club uniforms.
2.2.8. Regular Club Activities:
To create more excitement for students to join the club, to help students realize
that the English language club is really the perfect place to improve their
knowledge of the subject, to share their experiences of learning foreign
language, listening and speaking skills, and participate in other useful literary
activities, the organization of the club in addition to strengthening and
maintaining the organizational structure (as presented above all) there should be
improvements in the content and form of the club. Myself had many concerns,
thoughts and formed the following ideas:
 There should be a combination of three subjects (English, music, graphics) in
the professional team, specific into activities, integrate into the club's

activities. English teachers help students practice English songs or other
performances for students as well as organize drawing competitions or help
students draw pictures according to the theme of the activity. Collaborate with
the other teacher to perform aerobics, aerobics, rhythm ... .. etc.
 The content and form of activities must change or be renewed continuously.
Some suggestions below:
- Presenting views on topics, answering questions in the form of questionnaires
or gathering of democratic flowers (this activity has been active but less creative
the listener)
- Presenting learning experiences, answering questions to share experiences with
other members.
- Presentation of theoretical illustrations of subject knowledge (such as how to
divide, type, structure, sample ...).
14

- Give the situation, organize the contest between groups in the same block. This
activity is very rich, close to the topics in the main curriculum, and very
practical for the students, but the requirement to implement the unit of speech
must match the object in the course. each block. The organizers should not focus
on language skills but should focus on promoting boldness, using their
informative speech units and creativity. Scenarios may suggest:
+ Introduce, make new friends.
+ Ask about where you live.
+ Introduce, meet family members.
+ Ask about school, teacher, friends, time, schedule, subjects.
+ Ask about hobbies, habits, daily tasks.
+ Question about traffic means, traffic safety.
+ Ask about exercise, food, food hygiene.
+ Ask about the weather, seasons.

+ Environment, environmental protection.
+ Ask about mass media.
+ Appointment by phone; exchange forums on the internet.
+ Debate on how to study, study places, study conditions.
+ Talk about dreams, future, career.
+ Controversy about costumes, customs, traditions.
+ Ask about historical figures, historic events.
+ Ask about the event, natural disaster.
+ Ask about outstanding events in the year.
+ Ask about sports, music.

- Organizing painting contests by topic, introduction, presentation, comment,
questioning in English. (group / group)
- Drawing, writing postcards, invitations, advertising campaigns,
announcements (group / group)
- Writing paragraph about life around. (This form the club did.) The club asked
the members to write a short paragraph (150 words back) with the topic "The
small is not small". They write about the good deeds of you and the people.
Surrounding the area, such as collecting, maintaining public toilets, taking care
of the protection of trees, wildlife, helping grandparents, disabled people ............
.. and many good posts. .
- Writing tests, writing reports, writing reports ......
- Performing drama, showing the movements, nuances of emotions according to
the dialogue in the program.
- Examine the words, phrases in the course (in the form of music games).
- Examine words with the number of letters and content suggested (in the form
of a game like magic hat)
- Write dictation or say the sentence "running dictation" (in the form of the game
as a copy).
- Quick group quizzes give each member a single word.

15

- Group vocabulary exercises (written in alphabet).
- Examination of idioms and place names in paintings (places with textbook
paintings).
- Examination of studying country (form of game "By the line of history").
- Practice the song quickly in tape.
- Fairy tales, introduce good people good deeds.
- Compete description, guess who you are, what to do (form like game Who is
who)
- Compete performances, narrative gymnastics, football commentary ......
- Debate, eloquence on the topic suggested before.
- Crossword puzzle.
...
 In addition to the organization of competitions organizers need to build
collective games such as bingo, lucky number ... etc.
 When organizing the program, there should be a proper integration between
presentations, debates, contests, games, cultural performances and activities
of the Clubs. The club is boring, add a lively, attractive, attractive people.
 Rewarding and giving souvenirs in the activities is the most necessary.
 The organizers also need to change the stage design, layout, decoration hall ...
 Costumes, make up is also a note to increase the aesthetics, create more color
for the event.
 Lastly, after each activity, the organizers should meet to review the
responsibilities, work and lessons learned.
2.2.9. Language activities and big events
This is an opportunity for students to interact with foreigners. This is the
best environment for them to experience, improve their skills and communicate
in English, engage students in speaking, communicating in English with English

speakers, train them with confidence, couragement and self-evaluation.
Determining this is a very practical activity because it helps students experience
reality, improve communication skills in English, promote the students learn
English well and actively in the Club. With the support from Nghi Son Refinery
and Petrochemicals LLC, at each meeting, there is at least one foreigner from
countries such as England, Philippines, America, etc. Having foreigners at the
meeting help students improve not only my pronunciation but also my students’.
Besides, having chance to communicate with foreigners improved their
communication skills and helped us more self-confident.
What is more, each semester we held an big event which helps all students
from 3 grades have chance to use English. The first is event was the meeting
with the topic “ Christmas and New Year” with 55 participants from 10 classes
at our school. The meeting made a good impression for students and teachers
from other subjects and stimulated the learning English movements at school.
The next event and also the biggest events was the competition “The Olympia
Pathway”. In this competition, more than 300 students from blocks 10 and 11 of
my school took part in it. This play ground brought them many benefits and
16

helped them gain much knowledge not only in English but also other subjects.
One event that lasted in 3 months is writing contest. With the purpose of
developing all language skills for students we opened a writing contest with 70
essays from students of 3 blocks. This provided students chance to present their
knowledge about English and other subjects. Many writings have good quality.
These events or exchanging with foreigners last year has increased the
interest of students when joining the club. Through the practical activities, rare
opportunities, the Club has helped them use the knowledge learned in practice.

clearly by the gala club meeting that has won the A prize.
3. CONCLUSION AND PROPOSAL
3.1. Conclusion
As directed by MoET's guidelines, we determined that Club activity is
one of the types of activities that contribute to innovating teaching methods in
schools today. , is an important measure to implement the content of the
campaign "Building Friendly Schools, Active Students". From that spirit, we
organized the English Club and have achieved some initial results.
Over the course of one year of operation, it is clear that, in order to
stimulate students' learning, to help them develop their ability to communicate in
English, in addition to their classroom learning, The environment of helping

students practice English in the form of Club is a very useful activity to bring
17

students practical effects. As reported by Associate Prof. Dr. Nguyen Cong
Khanh: "The club is a place to organize activities that are suitable for
psychological age, meet the needs and interests of students, create environment
for Their ideas, talents are revealed and developed. "
Only through English Club activities, English lovers have a good chance
to develop their own strengths. It is very clear that nowhere can learners be more
confident in expressing the language they are learning with their friends at the
club.
Here they have the opportunity to share experiences, learn together,
participate in useful activities using English, the language they are learning.
A new point and here is our effort is that the club has organized the big events
for the club members. This is an opportunity for students to have the opportunity
to interact with foreigners, to gain practical experience and to evaluate the
achievements of the Club. This is the best environment, the most attractive form
for students to express themselves, practice speaking English with foreigners.
The confidence and bravery of using English in their communication is evident
in contest.
Thus the organization is English Club in the school has brought many practical
benefits for students, giving them the opportunity to show their talents,
strengths. Many students are more confident in communication, so the results of
learning English subjects of students are progressing. Help students understand
and experience life skills from their questions, exercises, personal life situations,
help them develop harmony, comprehensive personality.
My experience has raised some of my own experiences in organizing and
maintaining the English Club at my school. I would like to share with my
colleagues.

With great effort and determination, each professional group can organize the
English Club in the school to help our students develop their ability to
communicate and learn English. At the same time, it contributes to the objective
of teaching foreign language teaching in the school.
3.2. Recommendation:
English Club organization is a practical activity contributing to students.
Students are interested in learning the subject, developing communication skills
and improving the quality of learning. For the above purpose I would suggest:
- Every activity plan of the club should be carefully discussed and updated in the
professional team and the professional team leader must be the one who dares to
do, is determined to implement the plan. To serve the wishes and interests of the
students.
- The professional leader always takes the initiative in planning for each activity
and submits it to the school leaders so that the implementation is not inactive
with the school's plan and the training organization draws experience after each.
The activities for the club to operate more efficiently.
18

- It is necessary to have a picnic practice for students after each school year as
this is the most practical way to attract and attract more students to join the club.
Assign appropriate assignments to each teacher in the team so that all activities
will be carried out smoothly and efficiently.
