FIRST WORDS

H

How is it March already? Seriously, the rate
at which we are getting through 2019 is
slightly scary and, very soon, we’ll have a
quarter of the year behind us, which is just
a bit unsettling. Still, heading into spring
means warmer, better weather and longer
days, all of which gives us the perfect
conditions to enjoy our BMs, whether that’s
driving them, washing them or working
on them. With show season just a couple

of months away, I’m sure plenty of you
reading this are knee-deep in parts as you
work on whatever you’ve got planned for
your car this year, and I’m looking forward
to seeing all those fresh builds. There are
so many shows to enjoy, however, that it
can all be a bit overwhelming, which is why
this issue is home to our annual events
guide. It’s a comprehensive list of modified
and BMW-only events happening up and
down the country throughout 2019 (and
we’ve also highlighted a couple of European
and North American shows) and it’s all you
need to make sure you’re ready for the
best shows this year has to offer, whatever
you’re into.
Beyond that we’ve also got some
stunning cars for you to enjoy this issue,

like our absolutely epic M4 cover car.
Pushing out a monster 700hp and packing
uprated turbos, carbon aero, lightweight
seats and a roll-cage, it’s a hardcore road
and track beast that is guaranteed to get
your heart racing. If you prefer your BM
flavours a little more retro then we’ve got a
gorgeous, fully-restored E30 M3 as well as
a Dinan supercharged, AC Schnitzer-clad
E36 Cab that’s a slice of pure ’90s BMW
joy. From the UK, we bring you one of the

scene’s best 1 Series builds, a gorgeous
3M Black Rose-wrapped air-ride machine
and it’s joined by a wild little wide-arch
2002 that will definitely put a smile on your
face. We’ve also got a buying and tuning
guide to the F8x M3 and M4, a tech guide
to wheels and loads more to enjoy in this
edition of PBMW.
As for the next issue, we’re bringing you
a stunning supercharged E36 M3 that’s
right on every single level, plus a whole
bunch of other awesome modified BMW
goodness, as always. So, enjoy the April
issue I’ll see you next time!

RABBLE-ROUSER
Wide-arch 2002

THE TIME
Having spent 10 years hunting for the perfect E30 M3
and then another seven modding the one he bought, a lot
of Raymond Khublal’s life has revolved around the iconic
classic but, as the stunning end product proves, it was
time incredibly well spent.

6 PERFORMANCE BMW

T

he E30 M3 is a car that we’re
never going to get bored of
featuring or writing about
and we hope it’s car that
owners never stop modding,
because there are few things finer in this
world than a perfectly-modded E30 M3.
It’s another one of BMW’s designs that
really needs very little work to get the
best from it, but picking the right mods

MACHINE
is essential and you need to have a keen
eye and impeccable taste to ensure that
you don’t make a mess of things. Just
look at Raymond Khublal’s E30 M3 – it’s
a stunning machine that’s been treated to
the perfect selection of mods to make it
at once individual and aggressive; it’s just
oozing sheer retro goodness and this is a
car that’s very easy to get excited about.
For Raymond, cars have been a passion
for many years, as he explains; “I have
been interested in cars in general since I

can remember, particularly the E30 model,
as my mother had a 1987 E30 325i when
I was growing up and I always loved the
classic lines and quad headlights. Combing
through the Bavarian autosport magazines
growing up, I fell in love with the E30 M3
and it has been my dream car ever since,”
so we’d say he had a pretty good motoring
upbringing and it led to him owning a
number of BMWs over the years. These
have included a 1986 Euro E30, a 1984 E30
M3 replica and a 1997 E36 M3 Saloon and
Raymond’s no stranger to modding, either;
“My Euro E30 was modified with HRE 525
wheels, suspension, Steel grey metallic
respray and a full M Tech 1 package. My

E36 was a daily and it had suspension,
Vaders and M Roadster wheels,” he says.
“My first BMW was the 1984 E30 325i,
which I was going to try to do an M3
conversion on; it ended up having too
much rust so I got rid of it and continued
my hunt to find the car I have now,”

and we reckon it was for the best that
conversion didn’t work out, because this is
so much better in every way.
Finding the right M3 was by no means
easy, though, and this has been a serious
undertaking that’s occupied a significant
portion of Raymond’s life. “After searching
for a good E30 M3 at a decent price and
not finding one, then acquiring and getting
rid of my E30 M3 replica, I was determined
to find an E30 M3 and kept on the hunt
until it was found. All in all, I was looking
for over 10 years for the right one,” he
says, and that’s some dedication. “My
cousin actually found this one for me in
another state – I purchased it right away
and had it shipped to me, just from seeing
the pictures. It was in good shape but had
a two-tone respray that I was not fond of,
but no rust. The interior was mint and it
had the original S14 motor – those were
the main things I was after. It also helped

that it was the last year made, one of 272
produced for the 1991 model year,” and we
can only imagine how satisfying it must
have been to finally get his hands on the
car he’d been wanting to own for so long.
“My plan was to get a respray, fit some
new wheels, lower it and enjoy it… It kind
of spiralled out of control since then,” he

laughs, but he’s definitely not complaining.
So, let’s kick things off by talking about
aesthetics because Raymond’s first job
was to sort out that horrible-sounding twotone paint job but, funnily enough, he’s
almost done the same sort of thing himself
anyway… Now, take a good, long look at
the pictures of this M3 and you will realise
that all is not as it seems because it’s been
treated to a matt paint job, but only on the
bottom half, with the top half of the car
finished in original gloss Diamond black.
It’s definitely different, but we like it and
while this wasn’t Raymond’s end goal for
the car’s looks, he’s also grown to love
it and has no plans to change it anytime
soon. “I decided to do the flat black as a
temporary paint job until I could do the

full engine/windows out respray in the
original Diamond black finish. The look
really stuck with me and its been on the
car for a number of years; it looks very
aggressive and complements the boxy
lines of the car,” he says and we have to
agree. Obviously it’s not going to be for
everyone, but It is for Raymond, which is
all that really matters, and it looks good.
Of course, the car’s overall appearance has
been significantly enhanced with a rather
tasty selection of styling mods and while
they are subtle and largely OEM additions,
they really do an awesome job of giving
this E30 M3 some additional muscle and
presence. Starting off at the front we have
that Evo 2 front lip spoiler, which is joined
by Euro crosshair headlights, French fog
lights for that retro yellow tint, and Euro
grilles. Moving down the car you’ll spot
the AC Schnitzer mirrors and at the back
sits the magnificent Sport Evo spoiler with

Front seats have
been reupholstered
adjustable Gurney flap. Then there are
further additions that it’s easy to miss, like
the Evo bonnet seals, the Startec tinted
rear lights and the Euro towing eye covers.
There’s a lot of attention to detail with

these mods and they all work together
so well, with the end result being one
devastatingly good-looking E30 M3, and
Raymond has really done a fantastic job
on this car.
So we’ve established that this is a very
nice M3 but without the right wheels and
the drop to go with them, all those styling
touches would be for naught but, as you
can clearly see, Raymond has paid plenty
of attention to both these areas. Let’s talk
wheels first because his choice for the
M3 bucks the usual trend of cross-spokes
or something a little retro, and while the
CCWs he’s chosen have that multi-spoke
look that works so very well with the
E30’s styling, they put a twist on it that
really makes them stand out. “The car
originally came with AC Schnitzer Type II
Racing wheels,” explains Raymond, “they
were awesome but a bit too common

for me. I sold those and built the set of
CCW Classics that are on the car now as
I wanted a 17” wheel, but 16” wheels are
really the best-looking aesthetically for
this car (in my opinion). With the 17s I got
with a stepped lip, it still utilizes 16” faces
so aesthetically it doesn’t look like too

large of a wheel. I always liked the CCW
Classics – with the factory being a short
drive away from my home and building
the wheel from scratch the way I wanted
it, it was a no-brainer.” His decision to go
with the stepped lips on the CCWs was a
really good one because, as he says, that
allows them to retain the 16” faces and so
the wheels look a lot smaller. We have no
size preference when it comes to E30s,
they can even look good on the right 18s,
but we do agree that, generally speaking,
smaller wheels tend to suit the classics
that much better. We also love the fact that
he’s made the conscious decision to go for
something different for his wheel choice
and it’s really paid off. Enhancing the
appeal of those CCW splits is the serious
drop that has been applied and the way

this car sits, the stance of it, really gives
it a massive boost in terms of aesthetics.
“I went with the tried and true Ground
Control coilovers with Koni adjustable
struts,” says Raymond. “The car also has
Suspension Technique anti-roll bars front
and rear with reinforced mounting points,
upgraded end links and bushes. I also
installed a HIK severe duty front skid plate
tied to the frame rails via a roll bar hoop –

this has saved my oil pan countless times,”
he grins and we’re not surprised he needed
that considering how low his M3 sits, but
it’s absolutely worth it.
Sticking with aesthetics, the interior is
another area where Raymond has put in
a lot of work and, as with the rest of the
car, there are plenty of individual touches
that really set it apart. “I wanted to keep
it OEM but go for a bit of customization
and practicality,” he tells us. “I decided
to add E46 bits, like the centre console,
armrest, illuminated gear knob, handbrake
handle etc. and then wrapped those, the
dash and some other parts in suede with
M stitching. To tie it all in, I modified a

set of E36 M3 Motorsport belts in red to
finish it off as well as adding a custom
audio system,” and that’s a seriously nice
selection of upgrades, with some quite
unusual additions. The idea of mixing in
some E46 components is not a common
one, but it works really well here, while
all that suede definitely adds a much more
luxurious feel to the cabin and the M
stitching delivers the perfect final flourish.
There’s loads more to enjoy in here, like
the custom suede door card inserts, Evo
door sills, leather door pulls and door

trays and that retro Nardi steering wheel,
and the interior is actually Raymond’s
favourite part of the whole car. “I love the
M stitched dashboard and interior pieces, I
love the way the interior looks every time
I get behind the wheel,” he smiles and we
don’t blame him as this is one seriously
nice cabin.
Last, but not least, we come to the S14
that’s sitting under the bonnet; now, S14s
tend not to get treated to much in the way
of mods, which is understandable as a
lot of people want to preserve this iconic

with the tried and true Ground Control coilovers
“withI went
Koni adjustable struts. The car also has Suspension Technique
anti-roll bars front and rear with reinforced mounting points,
upgraded end links and bushes

engine and it’s also not the easiest motor
in the world to mod, and while Raymond
hasn’t done too much to this furious
four-pot, he’s making plans for something
very exciting … “I’ve powder coated the
valve covers and intake manifold with
M stripes, added a Samco silicone hose
upgrade, a Supersprint exhaust, AFE
intake filter and Shark chip. It’s fun, but
honestly still slow,” he says. “As I am not
a fan of swapping the S14 motor, next

on the list is an RMS supercharger with
supporting fuel, management and exhaust
modifications, which will be installed
by summer of this year,” and now we’re
talking. Supercharged S14s are something
of a rarity, with most people simply opting
to swap in a different engine completely,
which can give you more power with less
effort but very much changes the character
of the car, and you lose a big part of what

makes the M3 experience as intense and

thrilling as it is. The RMS supercharger will
still give Raymond a high-revving S14 to
enjoy, but there will be rather a lot more
power to play with and, with the right
supporting mods, he’s probably going to
have somewhere around 350hp which is
going to make this an extremely exciting
machine to drive.
Raymond’s E30 M3 journey has not been
a quick or easy one, but it has been time
well spent. After hunting for over 10 years
for the right car, he’s spent another seven
years modding it and he’s actually been
hoarding parts since before he even bought
the car, so this has been a very long-term
project, but the awesome end result was
more than worth the wait. Owning an
E30 M3 was a dream of Raymond’s for
so long and he’s not squandered his time
with the car and has worked damn hard
to create his perfect machine. It’s a real
beauty, packed with some must-have mods
along with a whole selection of really
individual additions that make this car
stand out in the best way possible. Having
spent so long on this build, and with that
supercharger coming soon, you might
think that Raymond is about to take a wellearned break and rest on his laurels for

a bit, but that’s not how his brain works.
“Along with the supercharger I’ll be adding
race pipes, fuel and engine management.
Maybe a different look with the paint
before I pull the trigger on a full respray.
Eventually I would like to build a custom
roll-cage setup for it and big brakes,” he
says. It’s clear there’s a lot more to come
and he’s going to be busy with his M3 for a
long time to come, and we get the feeling
he couldn’t be happier about that ●

CAR OF THE MONTH
T

he E46 M3.
Over the last few years the price of
the M3 has risen considerably with

some even hitting price tags of £15k for
very clean examples with low mileage.
It goes without saying that we are
aware of its flaws but without a
shadow of a doubt, it’s got some things
that you just can’t ignore - the 3.2 litre
straight six engine that snaps you back
in your seat and that purrs its distinctive
tone. Pure petrol-head thrills.
However, for our customer, those 338
horses just weren’t enough. “It’s just not
quick enough for me, but it’s a great
car.” So what did he decide to do
about it?

The result?
Wow. On the test run it was slightly
damp out, the rear end just didn’t
want to stay put losing traction - this M3
has turned from a tamed track
attacker to a beast. The needle glides
up to 5000 rpm effortlessly and then just
keeps sweeping. You have to really use
some stomach muscles to keep
yourself in the upright ready-race
position. Even better – the whine of the
supercharger coming into the cabin
really does put a smile on your face. He
was definitely right – 550 horses is better

than nearly a half over 3.

MSTYLE STAGE 2 E36 BODY KIT
The E36 remains as popular now as it ever has been and BMW tuning expert
MStyle has this excellent-looking body kit available for the third-generation 3

Series. The Stage 2 Body Kit includes front and rear bumpers – complete with
bumper trims – and a pair of matching side skirts. The front bumper features a
huge mesh grille, which not only looks aggressive but is also ideal for positioning
an intercooler where it will get maximum airflow if you’re looking at a turbo
conversion, while the openings either side of the grille can be used for fog lights,
daytime running lights or as brake cooling ducts. It’s a subtle but stylish kit that
will give your E36 a lot more road presence and it’s bit of a bargain, making this
an excellent way to instantly give your E36 a whole new look. Painting and fitting
are available at MStyle’s Essex-based tuning HQ.

POWER MAXED
TYRE FIX

Pioneer’s flagship AVH-Z9100DAB double-DIN head unit combines high-quality
audio and video with smart navigation. On top, it supports the latest connectivity
options for your smartphone, such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Wi-Fi,
Bluetooth and more. The 7” capacitive touchscreen allows smooth, effortless,
ease-of-use while a built-in 4x50w amplifier, 13-band graphic EQ and goldplated RCA pre-outs deliver excellent sound and offer plenty of opportunity for
system expansion with further amplifiers. If connectivity is king, there’s also an
HDMI input, twin camera inputs, dual USB inputs and a DAB tuner for the very
best radio signal when you’re not streaming music via Spotify or using the Waze
social community nav app in Phone Mirroring mode.

How many of us actually have a spare
wheel in our cars these days? If you’re
running a BBK, a spare probably won’t fit
over them and your boot is probably full of
audio or air, so that leaves you no room,
which is why a can of Power Maxed’s
Tyre Fix should live in your BM. If you’re
unlucky enough to have a puncture, you
simply attach the can of Tyre Fix to the
valve of the wheel, spray the whole can
into the tyre and then you have to drive
at 30mph for up to six miles, after which
you release the propellant air from the
tyre before re-inflating it and continuing
on your journey. This process allows the
relatively low-viscosity just-injected foam

to cover the entire inner surface area of
the tyre, finding the puncture and filling
it, before thickening and hardening to
the strength of rubber latex, plugging the
hole and allowing you to carry on driving
safely. Obviously it’s only a short-term
fix and you still need a new tyre, but it’s
perfect for getting you out of trouble and
getting you back on the road.

GAZ E30 M3 ADJUSTABLE
MONOTUBE COILOVERS
New from GAZ Shocks comes this monotube coilover kit for the E30 M3.
GAZ says its gas-charged monotube coilovers are far lighter than other types
of coilover damper and make more use of lightweight billet aluminium parts
that reduce unsprung weight. This makes them ideal for serious track day or
competition use and they also react quicker and can be used in an inverted
position. GAZ Monotube Coilovers come with silicone chrome springs and the
required mounting hardware. The spring platforms are adjustable to allow the
ride height to be altered as required and the bump and rebound settings can be
adjusted by means of a knurled collar at the top (or bottom if used inverted). Like
all GAZ coilovers, the monotubes carry a two-year warranty for non-race use.
Bespoke valving and the preferred spring rates are also available.

GOODYEAR EAGLE F1
ASYMMETRIC 5

New from Milltek Sport comes this cat-back system for the M2 Competition. It
uses a unique back box, optimized for the flow rates and back pressures required
for that model and the modular nature of Milltek Sport’s latest offering gives
customers complete freedom to specify the exhaust system that best suits their

63.5mm cat-back systems and all four come with twin valves, the second one

Goodyear has announced its next-generation Ultra High Performance (UHP) road
tyre, the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5. It features a compound that combines wet
weather capabilities without sacrificing endurance or dry handling performance.
Thanks to a contact patch designed to extend when braking, wet stopping
distances are 4% shorter compared to the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3. Goodyear has
focused on reducing flex in the tread pattern as lateral forces are transmitted

and this results in precise turn-in, higher grip levels and an improvement in dry
handling. Goodyear says that feedback through the steering is also enhanced,
providing a more communicative and confidence-inspiring driving experience.
Goodyear will offer 17” to 22” diameters, 205 to 315 mm widths, and 50 to 25
side profiles over the coming months.

Stage 2 turbos
now and then. When we were in Germany
we always stopped at BMW dealers,
looking at cars, dreaming about getting
older and getting a driver’s licence. I
remember when I was about seven years
old I saw this really nice Hell red E36 M3
and from that point the E36 was – and still
is – one of my absolute favourite models,”
he grins. “My first BMW was a 1994 E36
325i Coupé. In 2006, when I turned 18 and
got my licence, I used to sit and look for
BMW models on German car sale sites.
So, I found this E36 325i Coupé with a
manual gearbox, M Tech front spoiler,
Sport seats, KW suspension and 17” wheels
with way too small tyres. Back then these
models were relatively cheap to get from
Germany and since my father had some
experience with importing cars for himself,
he of course helped me to contact the
seller and not long after I was driving my
first car home from Germany,” he says
with a smile. That E36 introduced the
young Viktor to the wonderful world of
WWW.PERFORMANCEBMWMAG.COM

BMW ownership and, with that, modding
them and now that the floodgates had
been opened there was no going back. “I
worked on my E36 325i for a few years
and put on a VF Engineering supercharger
kit,” he tells us. “In 2009 I got my racing
licence and started to get more involved in
the BMW Sport Club Schweden so I sold
my E36 and got myself an E46 M3 that we
rebuilt into a track day car and then later
into a pure time attack racing car.” Viktor
enjoyed his hardcore E46 M3 for a few
years, but when the M4 appeared he was
smitten and realised he had to have one; “I
loved the design and everything about it.
I sold the E46 and in August 2015 I found
a nice 2014 M4 from BMW’s Premium
Selection. Me and a friend went to the
dealer to have a closer look at it and the
papers got signed the same day,” he grins.
So was there a plan? Oh yes, there was a
plan… “We decided that if we were going
to do this project it was going to be one of
the fastest M4s in Europe and by far the

most insane one in Sweden,” he grins. “We
wanted to keep it drivable for road but still
a track day/race car that could compete
with supercars on track,” and we’re going

to say that Viktor has achieved that and
then some…
Having bought his M4, Viktor wasted no
time in getting stuck into this build and
the mods began on day one. “The same
day that we got it we took it in to install
a cat-back Supersprint exhaust system
and a JB4 tuning box,” he says, “and after
this we installed Supersprint downpipes,”
and that’s a very healthy hit of serious
mods right there. The MVP among that
lot is the JB4, because that’s the key to
unlocking the S55’s vast performance
potential, and it’s enough to take power
up to around the 490hp mark, and that’s
without any supporting mods. Throw in
the Supersprint downpipes and free-flow
Supersprint system and Viktor had over
500hp on tap right away, but he and the
Schmiedmann team were only just getting

warmed up… “We did the engine mods
almost all at the same time during the first
winter. We had heard about the spinning
crank hub problem that some M4 owners
had experienced, so we decided to develop
our own lock system for the crank hub
in co-operation with Mad Performance in
Sweden,” explains Viktor. “At the same
time as we installed the new crank hub
we exchanged the turbos to new upgraded
Schmiedmann Stage 2 hybrid turbos,
also the air filters and charge pipes were
exchanged when putting it all together.
To be able to handle the power we were

chasing after, we upgraded the DCT clutch
to a new one from Dodson Motorsport
right away,” he says and that finishes
off a serious selection of performance
upgrades that have endowed this M4 with
some monster power. Just how much?
Well, running on E85 it makes over 700hp,
which is an insane amount of power, a
huge gain over stock and has transformed
this M4 into an absolute beast. The M4
is not a slow car out of the box, but with
WWW.PERFORMANCEBMWMAG.COM

the serious under-bonnet work that’s
been carried out here, Viktor and the
Schmiedmann crew have taken this M4 to
another level of performance.
With that much power on tap, it’s no
surprise that Viktor jumped straight on the
chassis upgrades after that. While any of
the many high performance coilover kits
available for the M4 would have been a
significant step-up from the stock setup,
with this M4 destined for the track Viktor
needed something suitably hardcore.
“We went for a KW Clubsport suspension
kit with adjustable top mounts at the
front. We wanted to have a kit with high
availability on adjustments but still road
legal,” and this combo is perfect, with the

KW Clubsport kit designed for track day
use, while still being supple enough for the
street, exactly what Viktor needed for his
M4 build. “The suspension is definitely my
favourite modification on the car,” he adds.
“As a stock car the M4 is too comfortable
and you can’t get that real feeling of the
car on the road. With the new suspension

the feeling is completely different.” Not
only is it the right setup for the car in
terms of performance, it’s also resulted in
the M4 getting a purposeful drop and, as a
result of that, it looks even meaner when
sat that much closer to the ground and
that also really brings out the best in the
stunning wheels. Lush as they look, these
splits might seem like a strange choice for
what is primarily a hardcore track car, but
here in the mag we’re seeing the car in
looks – rather than performance – mode,
and Viktor has two sets of equally sexy
wheels to swap between as and when
he needs to. “Since the car was to be
both a show car and for track days, we
ordered two sets of wheels immediately,”
he explains, “one set of 20” splits for
show and street and one set of 19” forged
monoblocks for the track, and both sets
are from BC Forged. I had the idea of how

the wheels were supposed to look before
we even bought the car,” he adds and
that was definitely the right idea as these
wheels look killer. They are BC Forged
