Unit 9 – S and Z Sounds
Hi this is AJ. Welcome to Unit 9. We've got four more sounds to practice in the next five days.
Now, very important, practice the best you can but don't get frustrated, okay? As I have
mentioned many times, some sounds are going to be very easy for you because they're already
are in your language but there will be some sounds that are very very difficult for you and when
that happens, just take a deep breath and relax.
Okay? The focus for you is just to improve. Keep improving, you're not going to be perfect the
first few days. Even after five days you might not be perfect for a very difficult sound, but it's
okay. Keep improving. Improving, improving, improving.
In future units you're still going to hear those sounds in different words. So you'll still be
practicing them. So just relax ... go forward day by day. Constant and never ending
improvement. That's the key to having a great American accent. You will do it, don't worry.
Let's talk about S first. S like super, or smart or success-s-s-s. S-s-s-s, okay this is a kinda of
relaxed sound so the jaw here is gonna be a bit relaxed. Not tight but relaxed. Your teeth will be
almost together but not completely, so not this s-s-s-s. Although you can almost make it like this
s-s-s, s-s-s, s-s-s, just open. Very small space between your teeth, s-s-s, and then you're going to
blow air through that little small space, and that's really it. No vibration on this s-s-s-s-s-s-s-s.
Now your tongue, the front of your tongue is forward. Not touching the teeth but almost s-s-ss-s-s-s-s, and it's the sound of that air pushing pass your teeth that makes the s sound s-s-s-s.
Let's practice it.
Look at my mouth on these videos and look how I'm using my mouth and my teeth. So the
tongue again is not touching the teeth but it's just, but almost and it's a little tiny space and blow
air through.
S-s-s-super, s-s-s-super, s-s-s-super.
S-s-s-smart, s-s-s-smart.
S-s-s-success-s-s-s. It's at the end and beginning both s-s-s-success-s-s-s, s-s-s-success-s-s-s, s-ss-success-s-s-s.
Exaggerate the s sound.
S-s-s-s-ertain, s-s-s-s-ertain, s-s-s-s-ertain.
It's spelled with a c, but it's an s sound, s-s-certain.
See! S-s-s-s-ee, s-s-s-s-ee, s-s-s-s-ee. S-s-s-some, s-s-s-some.

All right, that's enough for s.
Next is the Z sound and Canada they say zed for the final letter of our language, but in America
we say zee. So zee or zed either one. It's the same as the s sound, but we're going to add
vibration. It's a vibrating s sound.
So same thing, relaxed jaw, teeth almost touching, right? The tongue again gets almost to the
teeth, and just vibrate. Vibrate your tongue. Z-z-z-z. I can feel vibration too in my lips. My lips
are vibrating a little bit, and my tongue is vibrating a little bit. So still blowing air through the
teeth but get that vibration going. You can, maybe in your throat too some vibration.
Z-z-z-z, definitely strong vibration in the throat. Throat, tongue, lips, they all vibrate for the zed
or the zee. Z-z-z-z, za, za, za, za.
Let's do some words.
Z-z-z-zany, z-z-z-zany. Kinda means crazy fun. Z-z-z-zany, z-z-z-zany.
Use your fingers to feel the vibration. Z-z-z-zany, z-z-z-z-z-z-zany.
Z-z-z-zoo, z-z-z-zoo. Strong vibration. Z-z-z-zoo.
Z -z-z-zoom. Zoom means goes very fast. Z-z-z-zoom.
We're the band Led Z-z-z-zeppelin, z-z-z-zeppelin, z-z-z-zeppelin.
All right, that's the z sound.
Our next sound, sh. So when we spell it we use two letters, but it's one sound. There's two
versions of this. There's a vibrating version and a non-vibration version. Let's do the soft sh first.
Now for this the teeth are apart and one of the difference is that the, your lips and everything are
kinda open forward. S-h-h-h right. The classic way to make this sound is like you want someone
to be quiet, s-h-h-h. See how my lips are pushing forward? S-h-h-h again that kinda kissy face,
right? Or fish face, right? S-h-h-h. So that's the first part.
Now, again your teeth are apart. The teeth are open a little more than the s or the z. So a little
bit more open and you're blowing through air again. S-h-h-h-h-h-h, s-h-h-h, and for this one
no vibration. So blow air through your teeth s-h-h-h and push your lips and face forward.
So s is like this s-s-s-s-s-h-h-h, and we push, right and the air becomes more focused and it
makes an sh sound, s-h-h-h, s-h-h-h, s-h-h-h, s-h-h-h, be quiet. S-h-h-h. Let's practice.
S -h-h-h-ow, s-h-h-ow.

S -h-h-h-ower, s-h-h-h-ower, s-h-h-h-ower.

S -h-h-hall. I shall do it, I will do it. S-h-h-h-hall. S-h-h-h-hall.
S -h-h-h-ort, s-h-h-h-ort.
S -h-h-h-irt. I'm wearing a s-h-h-h-irt, s-h-h-h-irt, s-h-h-h-irt.
S-h-h-hout! Shout! S-h-h-hout, s-h-h-hout. That's the soft sh.
Next sh number two the vibrating or the hard sh we're just adding vibration. So it's the same
thing, teeth apart lips forward s-h-h-h, but now we're gonna vibrate again s-h-h-h, z-h-h-h, z-h-hh, z-h-h-h like vi-z-h-h-h-ion, u-z-h-h-h-ual.
That middle sound u-z-h-h-h-ha, u-z-h-h-h-ual, u-z-h-h-h-ual. Z-h-h-ha, z-h-h-h, z-h-h-h, z-h-hh, z-h-h-h-h-h-h, z-h-h-h. So again it's like an sh, s-h-h-h, but now you're going to add the
vibration, tongue vibration z-h-h-h. The front of my tongue is vibrating z-h-h-h. It's a very strong
vibration in my throat z-h-h-ha, z-h-h-ha.
Let's practice some words. In the middle. The sound is in the middle.
Vi-z-h-h-h-ion, vi-z-h-h-h-ion, vi-z-h-h-h-ion. Vision means sight or seeing. Vi-z-h-h-h-ion, z-hh-h, z-h-h-h.
It's in the middle vi-z-h-h-h-ion, vi-z-h-h-h-ion.
Another one, it's in, it's the second sound.
U-z-h-h-h-ual, u-z-h-h-ha, z-h-h-ha, u-z-h-h-h-ual, u-z-h-h-h-ual.
That's common, it's u-z-h-h-h-ual, u-z-h-h-h-ual.
A-z-h-h-ha is a part of the world. A-z-h-h-ha. It's not isa. It's this second sh sound zha, A-z-h-hha, A-z-h-h-ha, A-z-h-h-ha.
Massa-z-h-h-h, that's the last sound massa-z-h-h-ha, z-h-h-ha, z-h-h-ha, massa-z-h-h-h. It's
spelled with a g but it's an sh sound.
Massa-z-h-h-h, massa-z-h-h-h, z-h-h-h, z-h-h-h, z-h-h-h. Massa-z-h-h-h.
Remember, never trust English spelling. It will always lie to you. Maybe not always, but often,
and the final one again is the last sound.
Presti-z-h-h-h, presti-z-h-h-h, presti-z-h-h-h. Means status, fame, presti-z-h-h-h, presti-z-h-h-h,
Presti-z-h-h-h.
Very good.

Practice, practice, practice. Train, train, train. The training audio, that's where the magic happens.

That's where you get better. That's where you improve. Follow that five day effortless English
pronunciation process. Every unit five days, five days. Do all the steps exactly as I taught you.
You will get better.
See you at the training.

Unit 9 – Practice Session
Okay, you know what to do. Follow the five day Effortless English method. Train every day.
Constant and never ending improvement. Let's begin.
Super success shall certainly show up as I smash my fears. I'll visualize certain success. I'll see
myself shouting and smiling as I practice. Usually I shrug when I sometimes feel shy or suddenly
make mistakes. I casually shrug off mistakes.
I'm zooming towards super success and shall show my speaking skills soon. I'm smart. I'm
zooming forward. I have a sharp vision of success. I am certain I'll succeed.
Now at a medium speed.
