IITJEE 2009 : Test paper Analysis

As you would have experienced or heard, students found IITJEE 2009 papers overall difficult than 2008 papers. Whether the decision of making
papers little difficult was taken intentionally or unintentionally, but it was good that papers are made tricky and it was difficult to score. Introduction
of “More than one choice correct” type of questions and subjective type questions with negative marking clearly indicates that IIT people want to
eliminate students who do guess work and want to give preference to those who knowledgeable in subjects.
There were 60 questions in paper – 1 (20 each) and 57 in papers – 2 (19 each). Each paper carries 240 marks. Combined together students were
supposed to score from 480 marks.
Change of Pattern in IITJEE exam
Change of pattern of exam is very important to select the good talent. The change in pattern of the exam brings unpredictability and students who can
think on the fly and has good IQ perform better as compared to those who slog a lot.
Two years back in IITJEE 2007, there was a change in exam pattern. Assertion and Reasoning based questions were introduced for the first time in
place of Subject type questions (fill in the box type). There was NO change of pattern in 2008 exam. There are major changes this year in IITJEE
2009 exam. For example:
* Subjective type questions were introduced again. There were 8 subjective questions in paper 2 for each subject. There was negative marking for
wrongly marked choices. Total of 24 subjective type questions with negative marking will make scoring difficult this time.

* After a long time “more than one choice correct” type of questions with negative marking were introduced. This will eliminate people who do guess
work in the paper.
* Assertion and Reason type of question were removed from both papers this time.
Difficulty Level
Mathematics papers were definitely difficult especially paper – 2 where subjective questions were introduced and even the matrix (match the column)
type of questions were not easy to score. In Paper – 1 also questions were taking time to solve (as if they are subjective type questions) and it was

easy to score marks. 2008 Mathematics papers were also difficult especially paper – 1 (paper –2 was comparatively easy) but I would rate 2009
mathematics papers little more difficult to score. So, IMO, marks needed to score same rank would be 5% less this time.
Both Chemistry papers (I and II) were more trickier than last year. Single choice and Subjective problems were easy. Multiple choice and Match the
columns were very tricky (but not difficult). Papers seem to be scoring at first instance but it was difficult to attempt questions correctly. In chemistry
also student would 3-5% less marks to score same rank.
In Physics paper -1, around 75% of the questions were easily solvable and rest 25% questions were difficult. Solving Paper –2 required a lot of time
and patience to solve questions. Overall, the papers were “moderately” difficult. It was definitely a low scoring paper. For physics also we expect
performance would go down by 3% to score the same rank.
What rank students can get in IITJEE 2009?
Students who appeared on Sunday are worried about the performances and want to know what rank they can get based on their performance.
Following data will help them speculate their rank based on the expected score they are getting:

-VMC/100percentile

im currently in 10th and selected for reg.IIT,this year have done good work to filter better students.but sir i would like to ask how subjective
question were attempted.if space was provided to write whole answers.how time it takes to complete a subjective and what is average length of
a question

Sir,

This year the factors which will bring average marks below are
* Increase in difficulty level
* Negative marks in multiple choice and subjective questions
* Maximum marks 480 compared to 489 last times
Definitely you would have considered all these factors. But this year the number of appearing students have ncreased tremendously.I wish to
know how much will this factor be important. Will there be a increase in average marks due to this?

All those who say there were subjective questions in IIT 2009 paper are completely IDIOTS and out of there mind..It was clearly mentioned on
top of it that the answer was b/w 0-9(10 options provided)..what else do u want..and those were not lyk in which u hav to word out something
extraordinary……POINT 2 : 2 marks for each match..Last time it was like if u get 3 correct u get 3 and if all rite then 6..this time it was like if
u get 3 correct –>6 marx (double of the previous year case)…and 4 correct..(8 marx, so no loss of marx even if u missed one)……POINT 3 :
No assertion reason type..I think everybody agrees its difficult to score in them..especially when it comes down to option A or B ..i hope u
understand……………POINT 3 : Just look at the comprehensions of maths paper and compare it with those of previous years..u will
understand..which are lengthier…………..POINT 4 : those who still say questions were subjective..then one thing I would like to ask u..for
Writing the oxidn number of a compound(chem paper 2)..do u need to work out that in 2-3 pages?? nahi na……..one more example…simple
pulley problem in physics in so called “SUBJECTIVE” problems…………………I hope that u will give it a thought once again….also the
coaching institues are predicting ranks somethinh like 8000 at 168..The same thing happened in 2007 ..and everybody knows what
happened……..THANK U
Note : this i copied from goiit…not a piece of my creation

dude maine goiit ka hi rank predictor check kiya…it is nowhere near 2007….and yes the cutoff will down…you say that you can score more in

matrix match…did u even see them..this tym matching were very tough comparing it to any previous jee
i can say that the portion scoring was single correct which was easy bt it carried much less weightage as compared to more than one correct
where chances of loosin marks are more how so ever easy they are….you have comented on three subjective question, what about the other
21,hehehe…

Sir,
I clearly think the paper this time was quite tough compared wid last times…sudden change in pattern got me into deep shock and
depression….when i am expecting 280, i am also hoping to get a rank within 500…is that what i should expect and have a merry time or
continue wid my depression state

I certainly think the paper was tougher. For those who think that in Match the following people are getting an advantage this time should also
consider the difficulty level of each match the following as compared to last times.A lot of labour was reqd for each of the parts and each part
itself was like a full fledged question in most of the cases.
But I also think that in this paper people who messed up in their first paper did not have much chance as the scope of recovery in the second

paper was marginal. No considerable lead could have been taken there. That is what happened with me.

Yaar simple si baat hai, match the column tough toh tha hi saath main 5 choices bhi thi aur woh bhi more than one correct!!!!!!
One match the column required 7-8minutes to be solved!!!!!
Aur saath hi aggar last year ki baat karein toh last year match the column simple the!!!!!
can you expect a match the column from metallurgy and coordination compounds?????????
No!!!!
But last year that was there!!!!
I think that cutoffs for AIR 9000 will not exceed 155 in anycase!!!!!!!!
All the very best!!!!!!!!

What i think is that this year’s paper was NOT meant to be a jee paper… i’m sure u all agree that chemistry, especially paper 1, was very
obscure and vague… did anyone notice that inorganic chemistry had 65 marks !!!(for the unsurprised people, that’s 41% of the paper, as
compared to a measly 28% last year… and let me tell u, inorganic chemistry is not a good measure of aptitude towards chemistry… infact,
many students, including me, find it supremely boring) And neither am i saying this because i’m getting a bad rank (i’m expecting 302 marks;
137 in physics, 85 in maths, and 80 in chemistry), nor am i angry at the change of paper pattern (that, infact, was one thing i liked)… jee 2009
will be remembered forever by me as one of the weirdest jee papers to date… it looked like an Elimination exam, rather than a Selection exam
(like previous years exams) as it should be (hope u get my point)… though i liked the physics section, as it was largely solvable… so, i feel,
people are misinterpreting a vague paper as a tough one… the real difference between a vague and a tough paper is that a tough paper, though
time consuming, is solvable; a vague paper, on the other hand, has unsolvable questions due to inherent doubt… 2008 was tough, but 2009 was

somewhat vague… that’s all i wanted to say.

sir,
i think that was completely a vague paper….
it wasn’t of iit level & was a game of speed & memory rather than aptitude & conceptual clarity….like in chem many-many questions were
simply memory based like CN of al in alcl3,ON of Mn in product etc….sum questions were so easy that an average 11thee(who wud hav prep
for his school exam) cud have easily solved….the paper sucked big time..& sum of its sections were like aieee type.I am devastated as
expecting arnd 220 (my analysis tell that 220 wud fetch a rank arnd 4000)
the cutoff for CML also wud b very high….arnd 190 or so

don’t feel depressed but this is d truth….

I agree. questions pertaining to structure of n2o3 shouldnt be asked in a exa that tests understanding. even aieee has changed! I just hope bitsat
retains traditionality!

Aakash reply on May 1st, 2009 6:09 pm:
well arpit i think that you must have rocked in the paper but dear you must also think according to an average minded person!!!!!!
Last year if you think that the paper was a tough one then this years paper was the toughest!!!!!!
An average minded student just managed to score a sum of 172 to qualify the cutoffs the last year but if you really observe the paper with a
good eye upon it I am sure that you will surely agree with me!!!!!
This year firstly the seats have increased and secondly the change in paper pattern will surely decrease the cutoffs and the experts says that the
cutoffs will not exceed 160-155 in any case!!!!!!
hope you must have got what a general average student thinks and expects!!!!!!
Have a good time and cheers!!!!!!!!

The overall difficulty of paper was same as that in last year. But the problem is that we wont be able to get mark easily. The matrix match
carried more marks but the problem was that it was hard to score matrix match than last year. Maths was extremely tough. My score is 224.
Though i got 120 marks for physics my chem mark was 73 and maths 31.

I think that in this rank prediction, the column of expected ranks need to b pushed up by 1 row & that probably(only probably) wud giv a
correct analysis so it wud b
183-205 7000-5000
206-212 5000-3500
213-220 3500-2500
& so on(still very optimistic :0)
