THENURSING
ASSISTANT/NURSEAIDEEXAM
CHAPTERSUMMARY
Thischapterintroducesyoutothecertificationprocessfornursing
assistantsandshowsyouhowtousethisbooktohelpyoupreparefor
theexamtobecomeaCertifiedNursingAssistant(CNA).

nthisdayandageofprofessionalism,manycareersthatyearsagodidn’t
requiremuchexpertisenowrequirenotonlyformaltrainingbutalsosome
typeofrecognizedcertification.Thistrendisparticularlytrueformany
healthcareprofessions,includingnursingassistant/nurseaide(NA).
Priorto1987therewerenostandardsinnursinghomes,andthequalityof
carewasinquestion.Asthepublicbegantohearhorriblestoriesinthemediaof
theabuseandmistreatmentofresidentsinnursinghomes,thegovernment
decidedtostepinandtakeaction.TheresultwastheOmnibusBudget
ReconciliationActof1987(OBRA’87)thatimplementedstandardsfornursing
homesthatreceivefederalmoney,suchasMedicareorMedicaid.OBRA’87
alsoemphasizedresidents’rights,registerednurse(RN)presence,improvedfood
andmedicalservicesforpatients,andbettermaintenanceandhousekeeping.Due
tothesenewstandards,statesnowindividuallyregulatethetrainingandtesting
ofCertifiedNursingAssistants(CNAs).
TheinformationinthisbookisbasedonthenationalstandardsforCNAs.
Becauseeachstatespecifiestheamountoftrainingandwhatcertificationand
practical-skillsexamsCNAsmustpass,youwillalsoneedtocontactstateor
localagenciestofindoutaboutthespecificrequirementsinyourstate.

OBRA’87lawsalsorequirethatastateregistrybekeptforCNAs.
Informationsuchasdatesofcertification,reportsofabuseandneglect,andlapse

EducationandTraining
HealthcarefacilitiesusuallyrequireCNAstohaveahighschooldiplomaor
GEDandpassastate-approvedtrainingprogramthatconsistsofanywherefrom
75–150hoursoftraining.Youcanbehiredwithoutbeingcertified,butyoumust
receivecertificationwithinfourmonths.Whilethedutiesofanursingassistant
varydependingontheworkplace,thejobemphasisisalwaysonthephysicaland
emotionalwell-beingofthepatient.WhileadayinthelifeofaCNAisnoteasy,
especiallywhendealingwithadifficultpatient,mostgetgreatsatisfactionfrom
theirwork.Commoncharacteristicsforsomeoneconsideringthisprofessionare
dedication,patience,reliability,andcompassion.Anotherkeyelementtothejob
istheabilitytocommunicateandworkwellwithothers.ACNAmustalsobe
physicallyabletoperformthejob,whichoftenrequiresstandingforagood
portionofan8-to12-hourdayandliftingandmovingobjectsandequipment.
AsaCNA,yourtrainingwillconsistoflearningtoperformthefollowingbasic
duties:
•communicatingwiththepatientandothersonthejob

•bathinganddressingthepatient(generalskincareandhygiene)
•helpingpatientsoutofbed
•settingupandstoringmedicalequipment
•takingvitalsigns—pulse,bloodpressure,temperature,andrespiration


•feedingthepatient
•changingbedlinens
•cleaningbedpansandmeasuringurineoutput
•ambulatingpatients

CareerOutlookandEarningPotential
Thenursingassistantprofession,onthewhole,isgrowingfasterthanaverage.
Nurseaidesheldmorethan1.5millionjobsin2015andthatnumberisexpected
toincreaseby17%through2024.Whilejobprospectsaregood,thesalariestend
tobelow.Medianhourlypayis$12perhour,butvariesdependingonwhich
partofthecountryyoulivein.SalariesintheNortheastarehighestwhilethe
Southislowerpaying.Ifyouhavefiveyearsofexperienceormore,yourpay
increasesbyafewdollarsperhour.Paidholidays,hospitalandmedicalbenefits,
extrapayforovertime,andpensionplansareavailabletomanyhospitaland
somenursinghomeemployees.
Onceyouknowwhatyouhavetodotobecertifiedinyourstate,youcan
begintoplanyourCNAstudyprogram.Gotoalocaljob-counselingcenter,state
employmentagency,orprivatehealthcarejob-placementservicetoget
informationabouthowtogetthetrainingyouneedtobecomeaCNA.Many
healthcareagencieswillprovideyouwiththetrainingyouneed.Oryoumaybe
abletoprepareonyourownandsimplydemonstrateyourcompetencebytaking
awrittenexam,apracticalexam,orboth.Whetheryou’reinvolvedinatraining
classorworkingonyourown,youshouldbeusingtextbooksandothermaterials
thatwilltrainyouinthemostimportantskillsaCNAneeds.Suchbookswillbe

availableinpubliclibrariesandcollegebookstores;job-searchagenciesmay
alsohavesomesupplementalmaterialsavailable.

HowtoUseThisBook
Manystateandlocalagenciesrequireawrittenexamconsistingof
approximately70multiple-choicequestionsaspartofthecertificationprocess
forCNAs.Thisbookcontainsfivepracticewrittenexamsbasedonthenational
standardsthatcontainquestionsaboutalltheskillsyouwilluseasaCNA.The


writtenportionofthenursingassistantexamconsistsofmultiple-choice
questions,whiletheclinicalportionhasthetest-takerperformingfiveon-the-job

Evenifyourstateoragencydoesn’trequireawrittenexam,you’llfindthat
thesepracticeexamsareavaluablewaytoreviewandsolidifyyourskills.

Onceyouhavecompletedyourcourseofstudy,youarereadytotakethefirst
practiceexaminthisbook.Eachpracticeexamcontains70multiple-choice
questionsonallaspectsofthejob.Allowyourselfenoughtimetocompletethe
entireexamatonesitting,approximatelytwo-and-a-halfhours.
Eachpracticeexamhasananswerkeyattheend,whichnotonlytellsyouthe
