ABSTRACT
The research in this minor thesis is carried out to investigate the current situation of
learning English speaking skill of second year part-time students of English, at A2 campus
University of Languages and International Studies - VNU. However, this study only focuses
on difficulties experienced by the students of English and some recommendations including
strategies and classroom techniques and activities for both teachers and students to minimize
those difficulties. Especially, this research attempts to explore the potential sources causing
the difficulties of students in learning speaking English and at the same time identify the
specific problems of those causes respectively. Moreover, some recommendations are made
with the aim to help students in this university to improve the quality of learning the speaking
skill.
The thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction to the thesis.
The second chapter is literature review. The next chapter is research methodology. Chapter 4,
the main chapter, revealed the presentation and analysis of data which contains of students’
difficulties in learning speaking English. The final chapter is suggestions and conclusions of

the research, which discusses the conclusion that can be drawn from the study, concurrently
proposes some coping strategies and suggest some classroom techniques and activities for
teachers to minimize these difficulties. Moreover, the limitation of the thesis is pointed out and
the areas for further study are put forward in the final chapter. It is hoped that this thesis is
useful for students of English.
