1. Obstacle /ˈɒb.stə.kəl/ (N) vật trở ngại, sự cản trở
Definition: something that blocks you so that movement, going forward, or action is prevented or made
more difcult


Synonyms : barrier, difculty

Examples: The biggest obstacle in our way was a tree trunk in the road.


2. Torment /ˈtɔː.ment/ (N) sự đau khổ, sự dày vò

Definition: great mental suffering and unhappiness, or great physical pain
Synonyms : suffering, pain

Examples: He spent the night in torment, trying to decide what was the best thing to do.


3. Yearn /jɜːn/ (V) mong mỏi, ao ước
Definition: to wish very strongly, especially for something that you cannot have or something that is very difcult to have
Synonyms : desire, want

Examples: Sometimes I just yearn to be alone.


4. Dilapidated /dɪˈlæp.ɪ.deɪ.tɪd/ (Adj) đổ nát, xiêu vẹo
Definition: old and in poor condition
Synonyms : poor, sparse
Examples: The hotel we stayed in was really dilapidated.


5. Sordid /ˈsɔː.dɪd/ (Adj) bẩn thỉu, dơ dáy
Definition: dirty and unpleasant
Synonyms : dirty, disgusting


Examples: There are lots of really sordid apartments in the city's poorer areas.


7. Threadbare /ˈθred.beər/ (Adj) xác xơ, mòn xơ cả chỉ
Definition: Threadbare material or clothes have become thin or damaged because they have been used a lot
Synonyms : worn-out, thin

Examples: I don’t wear that shirt anymore because it’s too threadbare.


6. Misery /ˈmɪz.ər.i/ (N) sự đau đớn, khổ sở, những bất hạnh

Definition: great unhappiness
Synonyms : sadness, depression

Examples: Ten years of marriage to him have made her life a misery.


8. Meager /ˈmi·ɡər/ (Adj) sơ sài, đạm bạc, nghèo nàn
Definition: very small in amount or number; only as much or not as much as is needed or thought to be suitable
Synonyms : miserable, small

Examples: The food at my grandmother's house was meager and barely edible.


9. Adolescent /ˌæd.əˈles.ənt/ (N/Adj) thanh thiếu niên

Definition: a young person who is developing into an adult
Synonyms : teenager


Examples: Adolescents are easy to be led to commit a crime.


10. Accuse /əˈkjuːz/ (V) buộc tội, kết tội
Definition: to say that someone has done something morally wrong, illegal, or unkind
Synonyms : blame

Examples: He's been accused of robbery/murder.


11. Betray /bɪˈtreɪ/ (V) phản bội, phụ bạc
Definition: to not be loyal to your country or a person, often by doing something harmful such as helping their enemies
Synonyms : be disloyal, hand over

Examples: He was accused of betraying his country during the war.


12. Abandon /əˈbæn.dən/ (V) từ bỏ, bỏ rơi
Definition: to leave a place, thing, or person, usually forever
Synonyms : discard, give up

Examples: As a baby he was abandoned by his mother.
