What it means to be independent

Read the following extract and discuss
A father tells his son:
Don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t do
something. Not even me. You got a dream, you gotta
protect it. When people can’t do something
themselves, they’re gonna tell you that you can’t do
it. You want something, go get it.
Note: gotta = have got to
gonna = going to
1. What kind of person does the father want his son to grow up to be?

Work in pairs. Discuss the extract and prepare a short talk
expressing your opinion about it. You can use the following
questions to guide you.

The father wants his son to grow up to be confident, selfreliant, determined, independent …
2. What does the father mean by saying “You got a dream, you
gotta protect it” and “You want something, go get it”?
“You got a dream, you gotta protect it” means everyone has
dreams, so when we have dreams, we have to try our best to
make the dreams become realistic.
“You want something, go get it” means that we have to
nurture our dreams and we are determined to do our best to
achieve our goals.
