III. Differences in marriage and divorce of
Vietnam and America
Vietnamese culture
In the past, marriage in
Vietnam were arranged
by parents.
American culture
In US, parents do not
arrange marriages for
their children. Young
people are expected to
find a husband or wife
on their own; their
parents do not usually
help them.
Vietnamese culture
A Vietnamese
engagement ceremony is
an important one before
the wedding which
involves both families.
American culture
It is not necessary to
ask permission of
couple's parent about
their engagement
ceremony .
Vietnamese culture
For the reason I have
said above, so marriage
plans are decided by
parents of both parties.
As a rule of the custom,
the marriage of a couple
completely depends on
the decision of the man's
family.
American culture
In fact, parents are
frequently not told of
marriage plans until the
couple has decided to
marry. This means that
parents have little
control, and generally
not much influence ,
over whom their
children marry.
