Overall, it is clear that a higher percentage of 15-24 year-olds went to the cinema than
people of other ages. Cinema attendance increased steadily over the period for most age
groups.
In 1984, about 18% of people aged 15 to 24 went to the cinema compared with 10% of

youngsters aged 7-14. Monthly cinema attendance was lower among those aged 25-35 and
35 and over, at 3% and 1% respectively. Over the next ten years, the proportion of people
of all ages who went to the cinema increased, with the highest figure in 1994 of 40% for the
15-24 age group.
The figure for cinema attendance for youngsters aged 7-14 reached a peak of 38% in 1999,
before falling to 32% in 2000. In contrast, the percentage of those from the other age
groups who went to the cinema each month continued to rise until 2000. The proportion of
those aged 15-24 was almost 60% in 2000, while the figure for the 25-35 group reached
32%, double the percentage for the over 35s.

Task 2.
Environmental protection is the responsibility of politicians not individuals, as
individuals can do little. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Essay Plan:
 Introduction: the need for environmental protection – politicians pass and
enforce environmental laws, but individuals are able to act in important ways.
Disagree.
 Paragraph 2: individuals act to make the public aware of environmental issues
– example: Greta Thunberg and global warming. Their protests force
politicians to take action – example, the Amazon fires.
 Paragraph 3: individuals also act to protect their local environment – actions by
schools and community groups – examples: encourage recycling, stop pollution
locally, oppose developments which damage the environment.

 Conclusion: individuals can force politicians to act, and they can also act
themselves to improve their local environment.

Essay:
It is true that unless the environment is protected from damage by human activity, the planet
will soon become unfit for human habitation. I disagree that individuals are powerless to
act. While politicians must take responsibility for passing and enforcing laws to protect the
environment, individuals can take action in numerous ways.
Firstly, individuals have acted to raise awareness of environmental issues among the public.
For example, the schoolgirl Greta Thunberg captured the attention of the world with her
message on the need to take action on global warming. Not only adults, but teenagers and
children have become involved in actions to exert pressure on governments to implement
policies to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and cut down on emissions. Greta’s message
is that nobody is too small to fight climate change. Thousands of individuals joined her
protests against the burning of the Amazon rainforest. Their simple message that ‘our house
is on fire’ prompted international bodies to try to force the government of Brazil to adhere to
the treaties to protect the Amazon.
Secondly, while the voices of individuals can join together in the green movement, each
person can also work to improve their local environment. In schools all over the world, for
instance, children, teachers and parents are working together to promote recycling in their
area. Community groups have sprung up on issues such as closing a factory which is
discharging chemical waste into a local river. Other community groups throw their weight

behind campaigns to force national and local authorities to abandon construction
developments in their locality which will damage the environment.

In conclusion, individuals have formed pressure groups to hold politicians accountable for
protecting the environment and have acted alone or together with others to create more
environmentally-friendly neighbourhoods.
