1.2 Information about Market Development Department
1.2.1 Importance of market development in a bussiness
In an era of economy 4. 0 is developing rapidly, enterprises have to face big
challenges such as competition with other businesses. Because of the fierce
competition "market is like a battlefield" that businesses need the market development
department. This department will have the task of finding new potential markets and
promoting human consumption to the maximum extent so that it can dominate the
market.
The Market Development Department will have a very important influence on
that business by expanding the consumer market and stimulating customer demand.
This will increase profits many times more than before. The market expansion also
helps firms improve their position in the market and improve the market share in the
most optimal way.
In an increasingly competitive economy, companies have to cope with many
large enterprises of international stature, to survive and develop, they need to invest in
developing markets. Therefore, the market development staff is not only a business
development department, but it also becomes a partner that grows with the business. If
the market development department does not work well, the company will be
bankrupt. If the business is well-performing and thriving, it means that market
development employees are doing well. Market development staff exist with
businesses because of that.

PART 2: : OVERVIEW ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP AT DECO
2.1 The assigned tasks
During a month of working as a trainee at DeCo, I had many opportunities to
practice tasks related to my business English major.
In the first week, for me to adapt and get acquainted with the working
environment of the company, the head of the department arranged me to be the
receptionist in the building. The daily work is to welcome guests who are partners of
the company in Vietnam and Japan. Most of them are businessmen and experts in
Japan, so when I communicate with them, I have learned a lot of things.
The next week, I was responsible for translating English documents and reports
from English into Vietnamese and vice versa.
During the last two weeks of internship, my job was mostly to communicate with
customers, advise them on the company's products and services. Strictly speaking,
finding potential customers for the company.
7

Because my internship is close to Tet Holiday, I had a special task to participate
in dancing for the company's entertainment program to New year. Although it is only a
small contribution to entertainment, for me it is an unforgettable experience.
2.2 Difficulties and the personal experience acquired
2.2.1 Difficulties
In the process of becoming a trainee at the Market Development Department at
DECO, although there are many opportunities to practice the knowledge and
experience gained from university, I cannot avoid facing difficulties.
Firstly, I have no experience working in an office environment, moreover, this is
a company according to Japanese standards so it is very strict and has many rigid
regulations. So at first, I was quite hard and confused.
Secondly, most of DeCo's employees are people who have been working in Japan
so they are very knowledgeable and have a lot of experience in this market.
Meanwhile, I have never been to there, so I have to cultivate a fairly large amount of
information about the Japanese market to be able to communicate confidently with
customers.
Thirdly, my office computer skills are only basic. So when I made reporting on
word and Excel, it took me quite a while. I also did not have a chance to use office
machinery such as a printer, photocopier, fax,…therefore I have to ask others for help
to use these machines.
The last and also the most important thing is soft skills. During a month at the
company, I realized that expertise is only part of the job. The key to deciding an
individual's success is soft skills including communication skills, problem-solving,
team buiding... These are the things I need to improve.
2.2.2 The personal experience acquired
After 1 months of interning at DECO, I acquired many valuable lessons and
experiences. Some of experiences which I obtained from the internship time will help
me to success in my future job.
Firstly, the internship brought to me opportunity to apply my knowledge learned
at Thuongmai University, especially knowledge related to business English, translation

and commercial correspondence. It helped me improve my using skills in English. I

8

have learnt a lot of vocabulary, information and knowledge in labor export field as
well as know how to use translation methods.
Secondly, I realized that not only improving my English but I also have to
enhance my soft skills, job management and computer skills because this is key factor
that makes my job successful.
Thirdly, I learned how to communicate with the new colleagues. My colleagues
and my manager are very helpful and friendly. They guided me wholeheartedly in
work and gave me valuable lessons in the life. I also learned some necessary
characteristics such as attentiveness, initiative, honesty, loyalty and professional
attitude in order to work well with other colleagues.
Lastly, I recognized that English is an indispensable factor in any companies. If a
company want to expand their market, especially foreign market, they have to have
staffs who is good at English.
PART 3 : EVALUATION ON THE USE OF ENGLISH AT DECO
3.1 Existing problems in using English at DECO
With the particular environment of the Japanese labor market, the criteria for
recruiting employees of DeCo Company do not require too high English proficiency
( only focus on Japanese). Therefore, the

English level of DeCo employees is

generally only at an average level if not weak.
Each of the different departments, the request about the level English is specific.
For example, as Market Development Department will require employees to have
higher level, to work more with foreign partners, deal with documents, translate and

interpret Vietnamese documents into English documents, write email by English to
exchange and deal with problem about students and employees after they have joined
labor export. However, most of staffs working for a long time (more than 3-year
working) have low level in English. Specifically, there are only several staffs in
Martket Development Department, Human Resources Deparment and Document
Department who can listen, speak, read, write English fluently. Other staffs just only
read and write English or have a little bit of vocabulary and grammar.
Specifically on the qualification of the employees in each department of the
company will be more clearly expressed in these following table:

Table 2. Investigation on the English proficiency of staffs at the GLODECO
This is limitation and difficulty of the company when they cooperate with foreign
parters. . In general, level of English of DECO’s staffs is quite weak, so it affects a lot
on the process of working of the company.
3.2 Causes of the weaknesses in using English at DECO
3.2.1 Ojective reasons
There was the lack of English proficiency assurance at the stage of recruiting
human resources many years ago. Most employees recruited before 2018 are only at
basic level instead of having specialized English certificate.
Even though the directors have many speeches to encourage employees to
improve their English, there are no specific actions.

DECO is a company in the field of labor export to Japan, Korea and Taiwan so it
is inevitable for staffs not to focus on using English fluently. Most people tend to
cultivate Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese rather than English
3.2.2 Subjective reasons
Most DeCo employees are not good at English, they just stop at basic reading
comprehension because most of the time they use Japanese.
The language needs environment and regular practice to be able to develop, so
the less use of English by employees in communication as well as work leads to a
better level of improvement.
3.3 Propose solution for using English at DECO
According to mentioned problems in using English at DECO, I would like to
suggest the following solutions:

10

The company should give specific methods to improve employees' English
proficiency such as inviting English lecturers to teach staff or sending employees to
attend short-term courses ...
In addition to practical company work, every employee needs to be aware of the
role and importance of English in the current period to make a plan for improving
English for themselves.
Organize bilingual Japanese and English entertainment programs to both create a
playground for employees and stimulate a passion for foreign languages in each
individual.
Not only that, the company leadership also arrange to let employees take part in
conferences on sharing learning English experience held by domestic and foreign
organization.
PART 4: PROPOSED TOPIC FOR THE UPCOMING GRADUATION THESIS
After my internship at DECO, I recognized the important role of English in

business. Not only DECO, any firm that wants to develop and expand overseas
markets needs staffs using English expertly. This is key factor determining the success
or failure of the business. However, during an one-month internship, I also realize
some limitations in using English in business, specifically in communicating with
foreign partners of the company. The English speaking skills of the staff were not
good, sometimes customers had to ask again because of no clear meaning.
Meanwhile, presentation skills are becoming increasingly important today.
According to Warren Buffett - a famous American billionaire: The ability to speak well
before people can help work develops 50-60 years. However, the sad truth is that most
of us feel scared when we have to stand in front of a crowd to present or interpret
something. But if we get through it, practice and master the presentation skills,
especially the English presentation, we will get countless benefits.
Recognizing the role and importance of presentation skills and with the desire to
find out the best solution to improve and equip students before entering the corporate
environment. I would like to suggest the direction of graduation thesis is
“A study on difficulties and solutions in English presentation of the secondyear students in Faculty of English at Thuongmai University”.
11

CONCLUSION
DECO International Joint Stock Company is really dynamic environment for all
members express their competence and gain valuable experience. They focus on
building qualified staffs with highly professional, creative working style and adapt to
the innovation quickly. DECO is becoming more and more modern and take the lead
in the labor export field.
During one month doing the internship as an office staff at DECO, I have the
opportunity to apply my academic knowledge into reality and learn more about style ,
attitudes, methods of working, communication in business environment and
comprehending valuable experiences which helps me feel more confident and
determine true direct in my future career.

Through my experiences obtained during one-month internship and my
background knowledge, I conducted this report in order to figure out some existing
problem at the company. I hope that it will bring real value for company to develop in
the upcoming time.
Once again, I would like to acknowledge my sincere gratitude to my supervisor
and my colleagues in Market Development Department for supporting and creating
favorable condition for me in order to complete my internship and this paper.
I also would love to give my warmest thanks to my beloved teachers at Faculty
of English – Thuongmai University for their valuable assistance
