Wind Returns

Literature
Many years ago, there was a very long, cold
winter in Canada.
A young boy wanted to feel the warm spring
wind. He asked his animal friends, “Where is the
spring wind?” Magpie said, “Bear stole the wind.”
How did the boy and
the animals get the
spring wind back?
The wind was in a bag
in Bear’s den. Coyote
dragged the bag out of
the den, and Chicken
opened it with his beak.
So the boy said, “Let’s find it!”
At night, they went to Bear’s den. He was
sleeping. Weasel saw the wind in a bag. Coyote
dragged the bag out of the den. Then, Chicken
opened the bag with his beak.
Suddenly, the warm spring wind came out. It
woke Bear up. He promised that he would never
steal the wind again. Everybody was happy to get
spring back!

Echo the Mother
Elephant
15
In Kenya, there was a special elephant named
Echo. She was the leader of her elephant group.
What did Echo do
when Ely couldn’t
stand up?
Echo stayed with Ely and
tried to help him stand.
In 1990, Echo had a baby named Ely. His front
legs were weak. He couldn’t stand up.
If a baby is hurt, elephants usually leave it
behind. Soon it was time to move away and find
food. But Echo didn’t leave Ely.
My parents stay with me and
make me healthy food when I
am sick.
