Wales has a population of about three million. English is the main language and only twenty
percent speak both Welsh and English. Every year in August there is a Welsh speaking festival. It
takes place in a different town each year so everyone has the change for it to be near them . Local
people spend years making plans for when the festival will be in their town.

Each festival is attended by about 160.000 people. They travel not only from nearby towns
and villages but also from the rest of the British Isles and even from abroad. There are concerts,
plays and competitions to find the best singers, poets, writers and so on. Shops sell Welsh music

books, pictures and clothes as well as food and drink. The festival provides a chance for
Welsh-speaking people to be together for a whole week, with the Welsh language all around them

1. What is the main language in Wales ?

2. How many people attend in each Welsh speaking festival ?
3. Where does it take place every year ?

How can so many people be fed? What is worse, there is danger that someday mankind will have
only standing room.

Birth control should be a basic policy in our country. China has the greatest number of
population in the world. With the high birth rate, the production of grains and goods will be unable
to meet the need of the people. To raise people’s living standard, we must practise birth control.

There are disadvantages of a family having more children. First, parents cannot give their
children a good breeding in food, clothing and shelter and let alone education. Second, child-rearing
will exhaust the parents, leaving no time and energy for their work. Last, a family with more
children will increase the burden of society.

1. Mankind is feeling greater pressure from the expanding number of land.
2. Birth rates are higher than death rates now.

3. In the next forty years, the world population may triple.
4. China has the greatest number of population in the world.

5. In order to raise people’s living standard, birth control method mustn’t be practiced.

6. In a large family, parents cannot give their children a good breeding in food, clothing and
shelter and let alone education.

III. READING

Part 1: Read the text and answer the questions that follow (1.5 p)

In Viet Nam, Tet Nguyen Dan takes place in the first month of the Lunar Calendar - from
late January to early February. As preparations, people are busy buying things, preparing traditional
foods, and cleaning the house. “Must have” items deemed to be bought or prepared are cakes made
from sticky rice, dried watermelon seeds, fruits ( fresh and candied), tea, alcoholic and soft drinks,
ornamental plants, and flowers.

On New Year’s Eve, people make offerings to their ancestors, go to church or pagodas, or
go out to pick buds or young leaves. Vietnamese visit family members, neighbors, teachers, friends,
and graves of ancestors. Only best wishes and positive comments are expectedly exchanged, for
people believe that they would be haunted by bad luck for the rest of the year if these first days
were not filled with joy or good news. Normally, children receive their “li xi”- lucky money” in red
envelopes.

1. When does Tet Nguyen Dan take place in Viet Nam?

2. On New Year’s Eve, what activities do people do?

3. Why are only best wishes and positive comments expectedly exchanged on Tet?

(6)

on the Chinese calendar, a lunar calendar. The name Tet Nguyen Dan is Vietnamese for Feast of the
First Morning.

Tet is celebrated on the same day as Chinese New Year through exceptions arise due to the
one-hour time difference between Hanoi and Beijing. Tet shares many of the same customs of its
Chinese counterpart. It is celebrated from the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar,
around late January or early February, until at least the third day. Many Vietnamese prepare for Tet
by cooking special holiday foods, decorating and cleaning the house. During Tet holiday,
Vietnamese people visit their families, pagodas and temples, forgetting about the troubles of the
past year and hoping for a better upcoming year. Tet traditionally marks the coming of Spring, so
Spring is sometimes used interchangeably with Tet in Vietnamese. Vietnamese people usually
return to their families during Tet. Some return to worship at the family altar or visit the graves of
their ancestors. Other return to where they grew up. Although Tet is a main holiday among all
Vietnamese, each region and religion has its own customs.

1. Tet is an important holiday in Vietnam.
2. Tet traditionally marks the coming of Spring

3. Vietnamese New Year is based on the Vietnamese calendar.

4. Many Vietnamese prepare for Tet by decorating and cleaning the house.

5. During Tet holiday, Vietnamese people visit temples, remembering the troubles of the past year

and hoping for a better upcoming year.

6. Vietnamese people never return to where they grew up during Tet.
