<b>the correct answer to each of the questions from 43 to 52.</b>

A rather surprising geographical feature of Antarctica is that a huge freshwater, one of the
world’s largest and deepest, lies hidden there under four kilometers of ice. Now known as Lake
Vostok, this huge body of water is located under the ice block that comprises Antarctica. The lake is
able to exist in its unfrozen state beneath this block of ice because its waters are warned by geothermal
<b>heat from the earth’s core. This thick glacier above Lake Vostok actually insulates it from frigid</b>
temperatures (the lowest ever recorded on Earth) on the surface.

The lake was first discovered in the 1970s while a research team was conducting an aerial
survey of the area. Radio waves from the survey equipment penetrated the ice and revealed a body of
water of indeterminate size. It was not until much more recently that data collected by satellite made
scientists aware of the tremendous size of the lake; satellite-borne radar detected an extremely flat
region where the ice remains level because it is floating on the water of the lake.

<b> Harvard University, today recognized as part of the top echelon of the world’s universities,</b>

came from very inauspicious and humble beginning.

This oldest of American universities was founded in 1636, just sixteen years after the Pilgrims
landed at Plymouth. Included in the puritan emigrants to the Massachusetts colony during this period
were more than 100 graduates of England’s prestigious Oxford and Cambridge universities, and these
universities graduates in the New Word were determined that their sons would have the same
<b>educational opportunities that they themselves had had, Because of this support in the colony for an</b>
<b>institution of higher learning, the General Court of Massachusetts appropriated 400 pounds for a</b>
college in October of 1636 and early the following year decided on a parcel of land for the school; this
<b>land was in an area called Newetowne, which was later renamed Cambridge after its English cousin</b>
and is the site of t he present-day university.

When a young minister named John Harvard, who came from the neighboring town of
Charlestowne, died from tuberculosis in 1638, he willed half of his estate of 1,700 pounds to the

<b>fledgling college. In spite of the fact that only half of the bequest was actually paid, the General Court</b>

named the college after the minister in appreciation for what he had done. The amount of the bequest
may not have been large, particularly by today’s standard, but it was more than the General Court had
found it necessary to appropriate in order to open the college.

<i><b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B , C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the </b></i>
<i><b>correct answer to each of the questions.</b></i>

Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of
communication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech.
When there is a language barrier, communication is accomplished through sign language in which
motions stand for letters, words, and ideas. Tourists, the deaf, and the mute have had to resort to this form
<b>of expression. Many of these symbols of whole words are very picturesque and exact and can be used</b>
internationally, spelling, however, cannot.

Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or
<b>unintentionally. A wink can be a way of flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies</b>
approval, while shaking the head indicates a negative reaction.

Other forms of non-linguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with
the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide,
warn, and instruct people.

While verbalization is the most common form of language, other systems and techniques also
express human thoughts and feelings.

the literature of this half century.

As a result, at the onset of World War I, the spirit and substance of American literature had

<b>evolved remarkably, just as its center of production had shifted from Boston to New York in the late</b>

</div>

Other forms of non-linguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with
the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide,
warn, and instruct people.

While verbalization is the most common form of language, other systems and techniques also express
human thoughts and feelings.

This rapid transcontinental settlement and these new urban industrial circumstances of the last half
of the 19th century were accompanied by the development of a national literature of great abundance and
variety. New themes, new forms, new subjects, new regions, new authors, new audiences all emerged in
the literature of this half century.

As a result, at the onset of World War I, the spirit and substance of American literature had

<b>evolved remarkably, just as its center of production had shifted from Boston to New York in the late</b>

<b>1880s and the sources of its energy to Chicago and the Midwest. No longer was it produced, at least in its</b>
popular forms, in the main by solemn, typically moralistic men from New England and the Old South; no
longer were polite, well-dressed, grammatically correct, middle-class young people the only central
<b>characters in its narratives; no longer were these narratives to be set in exotic places and remote times; no</b>
<b>longer, indeed, were fiction, poetry, drama, and formal history the chief acceptable forms of literary</b>
expression; no longer, finally, was literature read primarily by young, middle class women.

<b>In sum, American literature in these years fulfilled in considerable measure the condition Walt</b>
Whitman called for in 1867 in describing Leaves of Grass: it treats, he said of his own major work, each
state and region as peers "and expands from them, and includes the world ... connecting an American
citizen with the citizens of all nations." At the same time, these years saw the emergence of what has been
designated "the literature of argument," powerful works in sociology, philosophy, psychology, many of
them impelled by the spirit of exposure and reform. Just as America learned to play a role in this half
century as an autonomous international political, economic, and military power, so did its literature
establish itself as a producer of major works.

<i><b>Câu 55: The main idea of this passage is____________</b></i>

<b>A. that the new American literature was less provincial than the old</b>
<b>B. that most people were wary of the new literature</b>

<b>C. that World War I caused a dramatic change in America</b>
<b>D. that centers of culture shifted from East to West</b>

Road maps and picture signs also guide,
warn, and instruct people.

variety. New themes, new forms, new subjects, new regions, new authors, new audiences all emerged in

Basic to any understanding of Canada in the 20 years after the Second World War is the country’s
<i><b>impressive population growth. For every three Canadians in 1945, there were over five in 1966. In</b></i>
<i><b>September 1966 Canada’s population passed the 20 million mark. Most of his surging growth came</b></i>
from natural increase. The depression of the 1930’s and the war had held back marriages, and the
catching-up process began after 1945. The baby boom continued through the decade of the 1950’s,
producing a population increase of nearly fifteen percent in the five years from 1951 to 1956. This rate
of increase had been exceeded only once before settle. Undoubtedly, the good economic conditions of
<i><b>the 1950’s supported a growth in the population, but the expansion also derived from a trend toward</b></i>
earlier marriages and an increase in the average size of families. In 1957 the Canadian birth rate stood
at 28 per thousand, one of the highest in the world.

<i><b>After the peak year of 1957, the birth rate in Canada began to decline. It continued falling until in</b></i>
1966 it stood at the lowest level in 25 years. Partly this decline reflected the low level of births during

the depression and the war, but it was also caused by changes in Canadian society. Young people were
staying at school longer; more women were working; young married couples were buying automobiles
or houses before starting families; rising living standards were cutting down the size of families. It
appeared that Canada was once more falling in step with the trend toward smaller families that had
occurred all through the Western world since the time of the Industrial Revolution.

Ethology is concerned with the study of adaptive, or survival, value of behavior and its

Evolutionary history. Ethological theory began to be applied to research on children in the1960’s but
has become even more influential today. The origins of ethology can be traced to the work of Darwin.
<i><b>Its modern foundations were laid by two European zoologists, Konrad Lorenz and Niko Tinbergen.</b></i>

period of development. If the mother goose is not present during this time, but an object resembling
<i><b>her in important features is, young goslings may imprint on it instead . Observations of imprinting led </b></i>
to major concept that has been applied in child development” the critical period . It refers to a limited
<i><b>times span during which the child is biologically prepared to acquire certain adaptive behaviors but </b></i>
<i><b>needs the support of suitably stimulating environment. Many researchers have conducted studies to </b></i>
find out whether complex cognitive and social behaviors must be learned during restricted time
periods. for example, if children are deprived of adequate food or physical and social stimulation
during the early years of life, will their intelligence be permanently impaired? If language is not
mastered during the preschool years, is the child’s capacity to acquire it reduced?

Inspired by observations of imprinting, in 1969 the British psychoanalyst John Bowlby applied
<i><b>ethological theory to the understanding of the relationship between an infant and its parents. He argued</b></i>
that attachment behaviors of babies, such as smiling, babbling, grasping, and crying, are built-in social
signals that encourage the parents to approach, care for, and interact with the baby. By keeping a
parent near, these behaviors help ensure that the baby will be fed, protected from danger, and provided
with the stimulation and affection necessary for healthy growth. The development of attachment in
human infants is a lengthy process involving changes in psychological structures that lead to a deep
<i><b>affectional tie between parent and baby.</b></i>

<b>Question 55: What was Darwin’s contribution to ethology?</b>

B. Darwin’s work provided the basis for ethology.

C. Darwin was the professor who taught Lorenz and Tinbergen.

<b>The term “art deco” has come to encompass three distinct but related design trends of the 1920’s</b>
<b>and 1930’s. The first was what is frequently referred to as “zigzag moderne” –the exotically</b>
ornamental style of such skyscrapers as the Chrysler Building in New York City and related structures
such as the Paramount Theater in Oakland, California. The word “zigzag” alludes to the geometric and
stylized ornamentation of zigzags, angular patterns, abstracted plant and animal motifs, sunbursts,
astrological imagery, formalized fountains, and related themes that were applied in mosaic relief and
mural form to the exterior and interior of the buildings. Many of these buildings were shaped in the
<b>ziggurat form, a design resembling an ancient Mesopotamian temple tower that recedes in</b>
progressively smaller stages to the summit, creating a staircase-like effect.

The second manifestation of art deco was the 1930’s “streamlined moderne” style—a
Futuristic-looking aerodynamic style of rounded corners and horizontal bands known as “speed stripes.” In
architecture, these elements were frequently accompanied by round windows, extensive use of glass
block, and flat rooftops.

<b> The third style, referred to as “ international stripped classicism” also came to the forefront</b>
during the Depression, a period of severe economic difficult in the 1930’s. This was a more
conservative style, blending a simplified modernistic style with a more austere form of geometric and
stylized relief sculpture and other ornament, including interior murals. May buildings in this style were
erected nationwide through government programs during the Depression .

repetitive patterns rather than presenting them as flowing, asymmetrical foliage, Like the Viennese
craftspeople of the Wiener Werkstatte, art deco designers worked with exotic materials, geometricized
shapes, and colorfully ornate patterns. Furthermore, like the artisans of the Arts and Crafts Movement
in England and the United States, art deep practitioners considered it their mission to transform the
domestic environment through well-designed furniture and household accessories.

<b>Question 35: What aspect of art deco does the passage mainly discuss?</b>

An air pollutant is defined as a compound added directly or indirectly by humans to the
<i><b>atmosphere in such quantities as to affect humans, animals, vegetation, or materials adversely.</b></i>
Air pollution requires a very flexible definition that permits continuous change. When the first
air pollution laws were established in England in the fourteenth century, air pollutants were
limited to compounds that could be seen or smelled - a far cry from the extensive list of harmful

substances known today. As technology has developed and knowledge of the health aspects of
various chemicals has increased, the list of air pollutants has lengthened. In the future, even
water vapor might be considered an air pollutant under certain conditions.

Many of the more important air pollutants, such as sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide, and
nitrogen oxides, are found in nature. As the Earth developed, the concentration of these
pollutants was altered by various chemical reactions; they became components in
<i><b>biogeochemical cycles. These serve as an air purification scheme by allowing the compounds to</b></i>
move from the air to the water or soil. On a global basis, nature's output of these compounds
dwarfs that resulting from human activities.

<i><b> However, human production usually occurs in a localized area, such as a city. In such a</b></i>
region, human output may be dominant and may temporarily overload the natural purification
scheme of the cycles. The result is an increased concentration of noxious chemicals in the air.
The concentrations at which the adverse effects appear will be greater than the concentrations
that the pollutants would have in the absence of human activities. The actual concentration need
not be large for a substance to be a pollutant; in fact, the numerical value tells us little until we
know how much of an increase this represents over the concentration that would occur naturally
<i><b>in the area. For example, sulfur dioxide has detectable health effects at 0.08 parts per million</b></i>
(ppm), which is about 400 times its natural level. Carbon monoxide, however, has a natural
level of 0.1 ppm and is not usually a pollutant until its level reaches about 15 ppm.

<b>Question 55: What does the passage mainly discuss?</b>

A. What constitutes an air pollutant

<b>B. The economic impact of air pollution.</b>
<b>C. How much harm air pollutants can cause.</b>

<b>D. The effects of compounds added to the atmosphere</b>

<i><b>23</b><b>th </b><b>January, 2016</b></i>

<i><b>Dear John,</b></i>

I have received your letter and I feel so glad when knowing that you had passed your examinations
with good marks. You want me to tell you about my family rules, and the importance of family in my
life? I am always willing to tell you all about my family.

Family rules? It's an interesting topic, isn't it? It may be obvious that every family has its own
rules. Mine has a few, apart from our traditional rules, especially for this school year as I'm in the final
year.First, I'm not allowed to watch TV, nearly no, except when there is a good or interesting movie or
when I have finished all my homework and exercises. And never do my parents let me stay up so much
late at night.Next my parents don't permit me to go out with my friends without necessary reason for
example birthdays.Besides, I have to take a balanced diet to keep fit for my coming exam. And one
more thing I have to keep up is talking on the phone, that is I have to set a limit to my using of the
phone.

life.Family is a place where I can be myself. It is a place where I am accepted for what I am. This is
where I am completely tension free and everyone is there to help me. Family encourages me when I
am surrounded by problems. It helps me survive through tough times and bring joy and happiness into
my life. Now I am preparing for my GCSE examination and the entrance examination. They are very
hard for me, but I try my best to pass the exams with good marks.

I have told you something about my family rules. How about your family rules? Are you ready to
let me know about it? I am really excited to hear about it. And I look forward to hearing from you
soon.

<i><b>Best wishes to you,</b></i>
<i><b>Love,</b></i>
