billion in 1999 to 9 billion by 2042, an increase of 50 percent that will require 43 years.

The world’s population growth rate rose from about 1.5 percent per year from 1950 to 1951 to a
peak of over 2 percent in the early 1960s due to rising age at marriage as well as increasing availability
and use of effective contraceptive methods. Note that changes in population growth have not always
been steady. A dip in the growth rate from 1959- 1960, for instance, was due to the Great leap Forward
in China. During that time, both natural disasters and decreased agricultural output in the wake of
massive social reorganization caused China’s death rate to rise sharply and its fertility rate to fall by
almost half.

TEST 2

I. Read the passage, then decide whether the following statements are True or False:

I’m in a favour of English- speaking contests in school. Such contests encourage students to
practise speaking English in their classes and help them improve their speaking skills. Besides, while
preparing themselves for the contest, students have a chance to review their lesson thoroughly. Contests
among classes provide students with opportunities to work with team spirit, thus enabling them to learn
how to cooperate with other people. Some students may think that their preparation for the speaking
contests are time- consuming. However, in my opinion, such preparations are worth spending time on.
My classmates and I have found that we speak English better after each contest. In sum,
English-speaking contests in school are useful to students.

Completing a marathon is considered very difficult, but many coaches believe that it is possible
for anyone who is willing to put in the time and effort. Obviously, most participants do not run a
marathon to win. More important to most runners is their personal finish time and their placement
within their specific age group and gender. Another very important goal is to break certain time barriers.
For example, ambitious recreational first-times often try to run the marathon under 4 hours; more
competitive runners will attempt to run the marathon under 3 hours. Many runners then prefer to finish
for example in 3:29:59, which make “sub 3: 30h marathoners”, instead of 3:30:01.

For more runners, the marathon is the longest run they have ever attempted. Many couches
believe that the most important element in marathon training is the long run. Recreational runners

commonly try to reach a maximum of about 20 miles in their longest weekly run and about 40 miles a
week in total when training for the marathon. More experienced marathoners may run a long distance.
During marathon training, adequate recovery time is crucial. If fatigue or pain is felt, it is recommended
to take a break for a couple of days or more to let the body heal. Overtraining is a condition that results
from not getting enough rest to allow the body to recover from difficult training. It can actually result in
a lower endurance and speech and place a runner at a greater risk of injury.

TEST 9

I. Reading

A. Read the passage and decide the statements below True(T) or False (F) .

February 14 is a Valentine Day. We celebrate Valentine day by giving flowers, gifts, and cards
to those we love. We do this in honor of Saint Valentine. You may be wondering, “ Who is Saint
Valentine?”

Legend has it that Valentine was a priest in Rome in the third century. There was an Emperor at
that time by the name of Claudius II. Emperor Claudius II was recruiting a large of men to serve as
soldiers for his wars without much success. The men preferred not to leave their wives, families, and
sweethearts to fight in foreign lands. Claudius became angry and declared that no more marriages could
performed and all engagements were canceled. Valentine thought this to be unfair and secretly married
several couples. When Claudius found out, he threw Valentine, where he died.

Another legend has it that Valentine was an imprisoned man who fell in love with his jailer’s
daughter. Before he was put into death, he sent the first “ valentine” himself when he wrote her a letter
and signed it “Your Valentine”, words still used on cards today.

(19)

Perhaps we’ll never know the true story behind the man named Saint Valentine, but February has been
the month to celebrate love for a long time, dating back to the Middle Ages. In fact, Valentine Day ranks
second only to Christmas in the number of the greeting cards sent.

VOLUNTEER WORK

Each nation has many people who voluntarily take care of others. For example, many high school
and college students in the United States often spend many houses as volunteers in hospitals, orphanages
or homes for the aged. They read books to the people in these places. Sometimes the students just visit
them, play games with or listen to their problems.

Other young volunteers work in the homes of sick or old people. They clean up their houses, do their
shopping or mow their lawns. For boys who no longer have fathers, there is a voluntary organization
called Big Brothers. College students take these boys to baseball games and help them to get to know
things that boys usually learn from their fathers.

Volunteers belive that some of the happiest people in the world are those who help to bring happiness

THE QUIZ SHOW

My best friend Jenny appeared on a TV quiz show a few nights ago. It was very exciting. We all
knew that she would be on, so all our friends met at her parents’ house to watch it. Her parents videoed it
too, of course. The programme started at half past seven. We screamed and clapped when we saw Jenny.
She looked great. She had had her hair done, and was wearing the new top she had bought the day before.
She sat in the chair in the middle of the studio while the presenter asked her some questions. The

questions got harder and harder as they increased in value If she didn’t make any mistakes and get the
most difficult question right, she would win a million pounds. By this time, Jerry had won a thousand
pounds. That was definitely hers, whatever happened. She answered the next question correctly, which
was worth five thousand pounds. I didn’t know the answer, but she did know! Then with the next
