An unlucky day

Last Sunday was definitely not a good day for me. It all started when I got into my car and it
refused to start. I immediately realized that I had left the lights on and the battery had gone flat. I
telephoned my friend George and he came round and helped me start the car. I then drove into town to
see a friend. I had arranged to meet him at six thirty, but by the time I got there, it was ten past seven

Completing a marathon is considered very difficult, but many coaches believe that it is possible
for anyone who is willing to put in the time and effort. Obviously, most participants do not run a
marathon to win. More important to most runners is their personal finish time and their placement
within their specific age group and gender. Another very important goal is to break certain time barriers. 
For example, ambitious recreational first-times often try to run the marathon under 4 hours; more
competitive runners will attempt to run the marathon under 3 hours. Many runners then prefer to finish

For more runners, the marathon is the longest run they have ever attempted. Many couches
believe that the most important element in marathon training is the long run. Recreational runners

commonly try to reach a maximum of about 20 miles in their longest weekly run and about 40 miles a
week in total when training for the marathon. More experienced marathoners may run a long distance.
During marathon training, adequate recovery time is crucial. If fatigue or pain is felt, it is recommended
to take a break for a couple of days or more to let the body heal. Overtraining is a condition that results
from not getting enough rest to allow the body to recover from difficult training. It can actually result in
a lower endurance and speech and place a runner at a greater risk of injury.

Rebecca Stevens was the first woman to climb Mount Everest. Before she went up the highest
mountain in the world, she was a journalist and lived in a small flat in south London.

In 1993, Rebecca left her job and her family and travelled to Asia with some other climbers. She found
that life on Everest is hard. “You must carry everything on your back,” she explained, “so you can only
take things that you will need. You can’t wash on the mountain, and in the end I didn’t even take a

The United Nations has proclaimed December 1st as World AIDS Day, December 3rd

International Day of Disabled Persons, and December 5th as the International Volunteer Day. For the last

Legend has it that Valentine was a priest in Rome in the third century. There was an Emperor at
that time by the name of Claudius II. Emperor Claudius II was recruiting a large of men to serve as
soldiers for his wars without much success. The men preferred not to leave their wives, families, and
sweethearts to fight in foreign lands. Claudius became angry and declared that no more marriages could
performed and all engagements were canceled. Valentine thought this to be unfair and secretly married
several couples. When Claudius found out, he threw Valentine, where he died.

Another legend has it that Valentine was an imprisoned man who fell in love with his jailer’s
daughter. Before he was put into death, he sent the first “ valentine” himself when he wrote her a letter
and signed it “Your Valentine”, words still used on cards today.

SPRING SCHOOL

Spring school is an informal school. It provides classes to disadvantaged children in Ho Chi Minh city.
Around 30 street children live and study at school and about 250 children with special difficulties from
district 1 regularly attend classes.

The Organization for Education Development co- operated with Spring School to set up English
classes in 1998. Dance, theatre, singing and circus classes were set up a year later. Children from these

classes participate in fundraising performances. They raise money to continue their English and
performance Arts classes.

Spring school requires volunteers to help organizes their fundraising dinner held annually in June.
This is an exciting night in which children perform circus, theatre, dance, and singing at one of the
largest hotels in Ho Chi Minh city. They also need foreign volunteers to contact sponsors and help to

THE QUIZ SHOW
