Every drop of water in the ocean, even in the deepest parts, responds to the forces that
create the tides. No other force that affects the sea is so strong. Compared with the tides, the
waves created by the wind are surface movements felt no more than a hundred fathoms below
the surface. The currents also seldom involve more than the upper several hundred fathoms
despite their impressive sweep.

The tides are a response of the waters of the ocean to the pull of the Moon and the more
distant Sun. In theory, there is a gravitational attraction between the water and even the
outermost star of the universe. In reality, however, the pull of remote stars is so slight as to be
obliterated by the control of the Moon and, to a lesser extent, the Sun.

ebb tides of the lunar month and are called the spring tides. At these times the Sun, Moon, and
Earth are nearly in line and the pull of the two heavenly bodies is added together to bring the
water high on the beaches, to send its surf upward against the sea cliffs, and to draw a high tide
into the harbors. Twice each month, at the quarters of the Moon, when the Sun, Moon and Earth

lie at the apexes of a triangular configuration and the pull of the Sun and Moon are opposed, the
moderate tidal movements called neap tides occur. Then the difference between high and low
water is less than at any other time during the month.

Câu 16: What is the main point of the first paragraph?

A. The time of high tide is later each day.

B. Tides have a greater effect on the sea than waves do.
C. The strongest tides occur at the quarters of the Moon.

The ocean bottom - a region nearly 2.5 times greater than the total land area of the Earth - is a
vast frontier that even today is largely unexplored and uncharted. Until about a century ago, the
deep-ocean floor was completely inaccessible, hidden beneath waters averaging over 3,600 meters
deep. Totally without light and subjected to intense pressures hundreds of times greater than at the
Earth's surface, the deep-ocean bottom is a hostile environment to humans, in some ways as
forbidding and remote as the void of outer space.

Although researchers have taken samples of deep-ocean rocks and sediments for over a
century, the first detailed global investigation of the ocean bottom did not actually start until 1968,
with the beginning of the National Science Foundation's Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP).Using
techniques first developed for the offshore oil and gas industry, the DSDP's drill ship, the Glomar
Challenger, was able to maintain a steady position on the ocean's surface and drill in very deep
waters, extracting samples of sediments and rock from the ocean floor.

The Glomar Challenger completed 96 voyages in a 15-year research program that ended in
November 1983. During this time, the vessel logged 600,000 kilometers and took almost 20,000
core samples of seabed sediments and rocks at 624 drilling sites around the world. The Glomar
Challenger's core samples have allowed geologists to reconstruct what the planet looked like
hundred of millions of years ago and to calculate what it will probably look like millions of years
in the future. Today, largely on the strength of evidence gathered during the Glomar Challenger's
voyages, nearly all earth scientists agree on the theories of plate tectonics and continental drift that
explain many of the geological processes that shape the Earth.

The cores of sediment drilled by the Glomar Challenger have also yielded information critical
to understanding the world's past climates. Deep-ocean sediments provide a climatic record
stretching back hundreds of millions of years, because they are largely isolated from the
mechanical erosion and the intense chemical and biological activity that rapidly destroy much
land-based evidence of past climates. This record has already provided insights into the patterns
and causes of past climatic change - information that may be used to predict future climates.

Scientists have developed a new bionic computer chip that can be mated with human cells to
combat disease. The tiny device, smaller and thinner than a strand of hair, combines a healthy human
cell with an electronic circuitry chip. Doctors can control the activity of the cell by controlling the chip
with a computer.

It has long been established that cell members become permeable when exposed to electrical
impulses. Researchers have conducted genetic research for years with a trial-and-error process of
bombarding cells with electricity in an attempt to introduce foreign substances such as new drug
treatments or genetic material. They were unable to apply a particular level of voltage for a particular
purpose. With the new invention, the computer sends electrical impulses to the chip, which triggers the
physicians to open a cell’s pores with control.

Researchers hope that eventually they will be able to develop more advanced chips whereby
they can choose a particular voltage to activate particular tissues, whether they be muscle, bone, brain,
or others. They believe that they will be able to implant multiple chips into a person to deal with one
problem or more than one problem.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 41 to 50.

Collecting coins can be a good investment, but it requires the study of popularity, availability,
and grading techniques. Some coins are more desirable than others, their popularity being affected by
the artists’ talent, the subject of design, the material from which the coin is made, and the time period
when the coin was created. Availability is just as critical. Providing the coin is otherwise interesting or
pleasing to the eye, the number of coins minted and available on the market seems to have a direct
relationship to the popularity.

The ability to grade coins is perhaps the most important requirement of a collector. A coin that
is popular and scarce, which would normally make it valuable, may be worth much less or nothing at
all if it has a low grade. Grading is standardized, and one can buy books and take courses on how to do
it.

Grades are given letter designations as well as numbers. The letters represent general levels of
the grade, while the numbers are more detailed/ For example, there re 11 number grades within the
letter grade for a mint state coin. A mint state coin is uncirculated, which means it has never been used
in commerce. It is in the condition that it left the mint, the place where a coin is created. The mint state
letter designation is MS, and the numbers range from 60 through 70. An absolutely perfect coin is
MS-70. It takes much training and a good eye to tell the difference between coins in this range. The things
one considers include whether the coin has contact marks, which are marks obtained when coins
bounce against each other in a coin bag; hairlines, which are marks appearing on the face of the coin
from the minting process; luster, which is the natural coloration; and eye appeal. For example, an
MS-70 is said to have no contact marks, no hairlines, very attractive and fully original luster, and
outstanding eye appeal, while an MS-60 may have heavy contact marks, noticeable hairlines, impaired

luster, and poor eye appeal.

Below the mint state coin, the letter designation and number have the same meaning. That is,
there are generally no numbers within the range of letters. But there are categories:

• Coins that are About Uncirculated: Very Choice About Uncirculated, known as AU-58;
Choice About Uncirculated, known as AU-55; and About Uncirculated, known as AU-50.
• Coins that are Fine: Choice Extremely Fine, known as 45; Extremely Fine, known as

EF-40; Choice Very Fine, known as VF-30; Very Fine, known as VF-20; and Fine, known as F-12.
• Coins that are Good: Very Good, known as VG-8; Good, known as G-4; and About Good,

known as AG-3.

Thus, a circulated coin can have a number designation between 3 and 58, with only the numbers
shown above available. That is, one can not have a coin with a grade of 6, for example. It is either G-4
or VG-8. It is possible for a coin labeled G-4 or even AG-3 to be extremely valuable, but generally it
will be a coin that is almost unavailable in higher grades. Books and publications monitor the coin
market regularly, just like the stock market is monitored, and they described a coin’s type, date, and
grade, assigning a price to every one unless that grade would have no value.

In general, coin collectors loathe cleaned coins, so artificial cleaning by adding any chemical
will detract greatly from a coin’s value. A true coin collector will say the dirt in the creases is a positive
attribute and much preferable to a leaned coin.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions, from 51 to 60.

Accustomed though we are to speaking of the films made before 1927 as "silent", the film has never
been, in the full sense of the word, silent. From the very beginning, music was regarded as an indispensable
accompaniment; when the Lumiere films were shown at the first public film exhibition in the United States in
February 1896, they were accompanied by piano improvisations on popular tunes. At first, the music played bore
no special relationship to the films; an accompaniment of any kind was sufficient. Within a very short time,
however, the incongruity of playing lively music to a solemn film became apparent, and film pianists began to
take some care in matching their pieces to the mood of the film.

As movie theaters grew in number and importance, a violinist, and perhaps a cellist, would be added to
the pianist in certain cases, and in the larger movie theaters small orchestras were formed. For a number of years
the selection of music for each film program rested entirely in the hands of the conductor or leader of the
orchestra, and very often the principal qualification for holding such a position was not skill or taste so much as
the ownership of a large personal library of musical pieces. Since the conductor seldom saw the films until the
night before they were to be shown (if, indeed, the conductor was lucky enough to see them then), the musical
arrangement was normally improvised in the greatest hurry.

To help meet this difficulty, film distributing companies started the practice of publishing suggestions
for musical accompaniments. In 1909, for example, the Edison Company began issuing with their films such
indications of mood as "pleasant', "sad", "lively". The suggestions became more explicit, and so emerged the
musical cue sheet containing indications of mood, the titles of suitable pieces of music, and precise directions to
show where one piece led into the next.

Certain films had music especially composed for them. The most famous of these early special scores
was that composed and arranged for D. W. Griffith's film Birth of a Nation, which was released in 1915.

NEIGHBOURS INFLUENCE BUYING DECISIONS

However objective we believe ourselves to be, most of us do not judge a product solely on its merits,
considering quality, value and style before making a decision. (61)________, we are easily influenced by the
people around us.

There is nothing (62)___________ with this. It is probably a smarter way to make decisions than
(63)________ on only our own opinions. But it does make life hard for companies. They have long understood
that groups of friends and relatives tend to buy the same products, but understanding the reasons has been tricky.
It is because they are so similar with (64)_______ to how much money they make and what television ads they
watch that they independently (65)________ at the same decision? Or do they copy one another, perhaps
(66)______ envy or perhaps because they have shared information about the products?

Research in Finland recently found overwhelming evidence that neighbours have a big influence on
buying decisions. When one of a person’s ten nearest neighbours bought a car, the chances that that person

would buy a car of the same brand during the next week and a half (67)__________ by 86 per cent. The
researchers argued that it was not just a (68)_________ of envy. Used cars seemed to attract neighbours even
more than new cars. This suggested that people were not trying to (69)_______ up with their neighbours, they
were keen to learn from them. Since used cars are less reliable, a recommendation of one can
(70)________influence a buying decision.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions, from 71 to 80.

Glass is a remarkable substance made from the simplest raw materials. It can be colored or colorless,
monochrome or polychrome, transparent, translucent, or opaque. It is lightweight impermeable to liquids, readily
cleaned and reused, durable yet fragile, and often very beautiful Glass can be decorated in multiple ways and its

optical properties are exceptional. In all its myriad forms - as table ware, containers, in architecture and design -
glass represents a major achievement in the history of technological developments.

Since the Bronze Age about 3,000 B.C., glass has been used for making various kinds of objects. It was
first made from a mixture of silica, line and an alkali such as soda or potash, and these remained the basic
ingredients of glass until the development of lead glass in the seventeenth century. When heated, the mixture
becomes soft and malleable and can be formed by various techniques into a vast array of shapes and sizes. The
homogeneous mass thus formed by melting then cools to create glass, but in contrast to most materials formed in
this way (metals, for instance), glass lacks the crystalline structure normally associated with solids, and instead
retains the random molecular structure of a liquid. In effect, as molten glass cools, it progressively stiffens until
rigid, but does so without setting up a network of interlocking crystals customarily associated with that process.
This is why glass shatters so easily when dealt a blow. Why glass deteriorates over time, especially when
exposed to moisture, and why glassware must be slowly reheated and uniformly cooled after manufacture to
release internal stresses induced by uneven cooling.

Another unusual feature of glass is the manner in which its viscosity changes as it turns from a cold
substance into a hot, ductile liquid. Unlike metals that flow or "freeze" at specific temperatures glass
progressively softens as the temperature rises, going through varying stages of malleability until it flows like a
thick syrup. Each stage of malleability allows the glass to be manipulated into various forms, by different
techniques, and if suddenly cooled the object retains the shape achieved at that point. Glass is thus amenable to a
greater number of heat-forming techniques than most other materials.

Question 71: Why does the author list the characteristics of glass in paragraph 1?

A. They were the same for centuries. B. They are liquid.

C. They are transparent. D. They are very heavy.

Question 74: According to the passage, how is glass that has cooled and become rigid different from most other

rigid substances?

A. It has an interlocking crystal network. B. It has an unusually low melting temperature.

C. It has varying physical properties. D. It has a random molecular structure.

Mobile phones _(1)_, microwave radio emissions. Researchers are questioning whether
exposure to these radio waves might_(2)_to brain cancer.

(23)

So far, the data are not conclusive. The scientific evidence does not _(3)_us to say with
certainly that mobile phones are categorically _(4)_. On the other hand, current research has not yet
_(5)_clear adverse effects associated with the prolonged use of mobile phones.

Numerous studies are now going _(6)_in various countries. Some of the results are
contradictory but others have shown an association between moblie phone use and cancer. _(7)_, these
studies are preliminary and the issue needs further, long-term investigation.

_(8)_the scientific data are more definite, it is prudent for people to try not to use mobile phones
for long _(9)_of time. Don’t think that hands-free phones are any safer either. At the moment, research
is in fact showing the _(10)_ and they may be just as dangerous.

It is also thought that young people whose bodies are still growing may be at particular risk.

Just two months after the flight of Apollo 10, the Apollo 11 astronauts made their historic
landing on the surface of the Moon. This momentous trip for humanity also provided scientists with an
abudance of material for study; from rock and soil samples brought back from the Moon, scientists
have been able to determine much about the composition of the Moon (as well as to draw) inferences
about the development of the Moon from its composition.

The Moon soil that came back on Apollo 11 contains small bits of rock and glass which were
probably ground from larger rocks when meteors impacted with the surface of the Moon. The bits of
glass are spherical in shape and constitute approximately half of the Moon soil. Scientists found no
trace of animal or plant life in this soil.

(24)

that the temperature of the Moon was once extremely hot. Breccia, the other kind of rock brought back
by the astronauts, was formed during the impact of falling objects on the surface of the Moon. This
second type of rock consists of small pieces of rock compressed together bythe force of impact. Gases
such as hydrogen and helium were found in some of the rocks, and scientists believe that these gas
were carried to the Moon by the solar wind, the streams of gases that are constantly emitted by the
Sun.

Câu 16:The paragraph preceding the passage most likely discusses:

Because writing has become so important in our culture, we sometimes think of it as more real than
speech. A little thought, however, will show why speech is primary and writing is secondary to
language. Human beings have been writing( as far as we can tell from surviving evidence) for at least
5000 years; but they have been talking for much longer, doubtless ever since there have been human
beings.

When writing did develop, it was derived from and represented speech, although imperfectly. Even
today, there are spoken languages that have no written form. Furthermore, we all learn to talk well
before we learn to write; any human child who is not severely handicapped physically or mentally will
learn to talk: a normal human being can not be prevented from doing so. On the other hand, it takes a
special effort to learn to write; in the past many intelligent and useful members of society did not
acquire the skill, and even today many who speak languages with writing systems never learn to read
or write, while some who learn the rudiments of those skills do so only imperfectly.

To affirm the primacy of speech over writing is not, however, to disparage the latter. One
advantage writing has over speech is that it is more permanent and makes possible the records that any
civilization must have. Thus, if speaking makes us human, writing makes us civilizes.

In addition to the Moon soil, astronauts gather two basic types of rocks from the surface of the
Moon: Basalt and breccia . Basalt is a cooled and hardened volcanic lava common to the Earth. Since
basalt is formed under extremely high temperatures, the presence of this type of rock is an indication
that the temperature of the Moon was once extremely hot. Breccia, the other kind of rock brought back
by the astronauts, was formed during the impact of falling objects on the surface of the Moon. This
second type of rock consists of small pieces of rock compressed together bythe force of impact. Gases
such as hydrogen and helium were found in some of the rocks, and scientists believe that these gas
were carried to the Moon by the solar wind, the streams of gases that are constantly emitted by the
Sun.

Câu 46:The paragraph preceding the passage most likely discusses:

A. astronaut training B. the inception of the Apollo space program.
C. a different space trip. D. previous Moon landings
