I. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions

Long before they can actually speak, babies pay special attention to the speech they hear around
them. Within the first month of their lives, babies' responses to the sound of the human voice will be different
from their responses to other sorts of auditory stimuli. They will stop crying when they hear a person talking,
but not if they hear a b e ll or the sound of a r a t tle . At first, the sounds that an infant notices might be
only those words that receive the heaviest emphasis and that often occur at the ends of utterances. By the
time they are six or seven weeks old, babies can detect the difference between syllables pronounced
with rising and falling inflections. Very soon, these differences in adult stress and intonation can influence
babies' emotional states and behavior. Long before they develop actual language comprehension, babies
can sense when an adult is playful or angry, attempting to initiate or terminate new behavior, and so on,
merely on the basis of cues such as the rate, volume, and melody of adult speech.

Adults make it as easy as they can for babies to pick up a language by exaggerating such cues.
One researcher observed babies and their mothers in six diverse cultures and found that, in all six languages,
the mothers used simplified syntax, short utterances and nonsense sounds, and transformed certain
sounds into baby talk. Other investigators have noted that when mothers talk to babies who are only a few
months old, th e y exaggerate the pitch, loudness, and intensity of their words. T h e y also exaggerate their
facial expressions, hold vowels longer, and emphasize certain words.

More significant for language development than their response to general intonation is observation
that tiny babies can make relatively fine distinctions between speech sounds. In other words, babies enter the
world with the ability to make precisely those perceptual discriminations that are necessary if they are to

acquire aural language.

Babies obviously derive pleasure from sound input, too: even as young as nine months they will listen to
songs or stories, although the words themselves are beyond their understanding. For babies, language is a
sensory-motor delight rather than the route to prosaic meaning that it often is for adults.

In the West, cartoons are used chiefly to make people laugh. The important feature of all these
cartoons is the joke and the element of surprise which is contained. Even though it is very funny, a good

cartoon is always based on close observation of a particular feature of life and usually has a serious purpose.

Cartoons in the West have been associated with political and social matters for many years. In
wartime, for example, they proved to be an excellent way of spreading propaganda. Nowadays cartoons are
often used to make short, sharp comments on politics and governments as well as on a variety of social
matters. In this way, the modern cartoon has become a very powerful force in influencing people in Europe
and the United States.

Unlike most American and European cartoons, however, many Chinese cartoon drawings in the past
have also attempted to educate people, especially those who could not read and write. Such cartoons about the
lives and sayings of great men in China have proved extremely useful in bringing education to illiterate and
semi-literate people throughout China. Confucius, Mencius and Laozi have all appeared in very interesting
stories presented in the form of cartoons. The cartoons themselves have thus served to illustrate the teachings
of the Chinese sages in a very attractive way.

In this sense, many Chinese cartoons are different from Western cartoons in so far as they do not
depend chiefly on telling jokes. Often, there is nothing to laugh at when you see Chinese cartoons. This is not
their primary aim. In addition to commenting on serious political and social matters, Chinese cartoons have
aimed at spreading the traditional Chinese thoughts and culture as widely as possible among the people.

can now reach people who live in such countries as Britain, France, America, Japan, Malaysia or Australia

Until recently, the transfer of knowledge and culture has been overwhelmingly from the West to the
East and not vice versa. By means of cartoons, however, publishing companies in Taiwan, Hong Kong and
Singapore are now having success in correcting this imbalance between the East and the West.

cartoons serves to illustrate the truth of Confucius's famous saying "One picture is worth a thousand words."

The first question we might ask is: What can you learn in college that will help you in being an
employee? The schools teach a ..(42)_______.. many things of value to the future accountant, doctor or
electrician. Do they also teach anything of value to the future employee? Yes, they teach the one thing that it
is perhaps most valuable for the future employee to know. But very few students bother to learn it. This basic
is the skill ability to organize and express ideas in writing and in speaking. This means that your success as an
employee will depend on your ability to communicate, with people and to ..(43)_______.. your own thoughts
and ideas to them so they will both understand what you are driving at and be persuaded.

Of course, skill in expression is not enough ..(44)_______.. itself. You must have something to say in the
first place. The effectiveness of your job depends much on your ability to make other people understand your
work as they do on the quality of the work itself.

Expressing one's thoughts is one skill that the school can ..(45)_______.. teach. The foundations for skill
in expression have to be laid early: an interest in and an ear ..(46)_______.. language; experience in
organizing ideas and data, in brushing aside the irrelevant, and above all the habit of verbal expression. If you
do not lay these foundations during your school years, you may never have an opportunity again.

correct answer to each of the questions

(12)

Today, however, Chinese cartoons have an added part to play in spreading knowledge. They offer a
very attractive and useful way of reaching people throughout the world, regardless of the particular country in
which they live. Thus, through cartoons, the thoughts and teachings of the old Chinese philosophers and sages
can now reach people who live in such countries as Britain, France, America, Japan, Malaysia or Australia
and who are unfamiliar with the Chinese culture.

Until recently, the transfer of knowledge and culture has been overwhelmingly from the West to the
East and not vice versa. By means of cartoons, however, publishing companies in Taiwan, Hong Kong and
Singapore are now having success in correcting this imbalance between the East and the West.

Cartoons can overcome language barriers in all foreign countries. The vast increase in the popularity of these
cartoons serves to illustrate the truth of Confucius's famous saying "One picture is worth a thousand words."

IV. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions

(13)

Câu 16. Why does the author mention a bell and a rattle in paragraph 1?
A. To give examples of typical toys that babies do not like

B. To give examples of sounds that will cause a baby to cry

C. To contrast the reactions of babies to human and nonhuman sounds
D. To explain how babies distinguish between different nonhuman sounds

Câu 17. Which of the following can be inferred about the findings described in paragraph 2?

A. Babies who are exposed to more than one language can speak earlier than babies exposed to a single
language

B. Mothers from different cultures speak to their babies in similar ways

C. The mothers observed by the researchers were consciously teaching their babies to speak
D. Babies ignore facial expressions in comprehending aural language

Câu 18. The passage mentions all of the followings as the ways adults modify their speech when talking to
babies EXCEPT ….

A. speaking more loudly than normal B. using meaningless sounds
C. speaking with shorter sentences D. giving all words equal emphasis
Câu 19. The word "They" in paragraph 2 refers to ……..

A. mothers B. investigators C. words D. babies

Câu 20. What point does the author make to illustrate that babies are born with the ability to acquire
language?

A. Babies notice even minor differences between speech sounds
B. Babies are more sensitive to sounds than are adults

C. Babies begin to understand words in songs

D. Babies exaggerate their own sounds and expressions
Câu 21. What does the passage mainly discuss?

B. The response of babies to sounds other than the human voice

C. The differences between a baby's and an adult's ability to comprehend language

D. How babies perceive and respond to the human voice in their earliest stages of language
development

Câu 22. According to the author, why do babies listen to songs and stories, even though they cannot

that tiny babies can make relatively fine distinctions between speech sounds.

The first question we might ask is: What can you learn in college that will help you in being an

electrician. Do they also teach anything of value to the future employee? Yes, they teach the one thing that it
is perhaps most valuable for the future employee to know. But very few students bother to learn it. This basic
is the skill ability to organize and express ideas in writing and in speaking. This means that your success as an
employee will depend on your ability to communicate, with people and to ..(20)_______.. your own thoughts
and ideas to them so they will both understand what you are driving at and be persuaded.

Of course, skill in expression is not enough ..(21)_______.. itself. You must have something to say in the

work as they do on the quality of the work itself.

Expressing one's thoughts is one skill that the school can ..(22)_______.. teach. The foundations for skill
in expression have to be laid early: an interest in and an ear ..(23)_______.. language; experience in
organizing ideas and data, in brushing aside the irrelevant, and above all the habit of verbal expression. If you
do not lay these foundations during your school years, you may never have an opportunity again.

In

The first question we might ask is: What can you learn in college that will help you in being an
employee? The schools teach a ..(37)_______.. many things of value to the future accountant, doctor or
electrician. Do they also teach anything of value to the future employee? Yes, they teach the one thing that it
is perhaps most valuable for the future employee to know. But very few students bother to learn it. This basic
is the skill ability to organize and express ideas in writing and in speaking. This means that your success as an
employee will depend on your ability to communicate, with people and to ..(38)_______.. your own thoughts
and ideas to them so they will both understand what you are driving at and be persuaded.

Of course, skill in expression is not enough ..(39)_______.. itself. You must have something to say in the
first place. The effectiveness of your job depends much on your ability to make other people understand your

work as they do on the quality of the work itself.

Expressing one's thoughts is one skill that the school can ..(40)_______.. teach. The foundations for skill
in expression have to be laid early: an interest in and an ear ..(41)_______.. language; experience in
organizing ideas and data, in brushing aside the irrelevant, and above all the habit of verbal expression. If you
do not lay these foundations during your school years, you may never have an opportunity again.

Long before they develop actual language comprehension, babies
can sense when an adult is playful or angry, attempting to initiate or terminate new behavior, and so on,
merely on the basis of cues such as the rate, volume, and melody of adult speech.

facial expressions, hold vowels longer, and emphasize certain words.

Nowadays cartoons are
often used to make short, sharp comments on politics and governments as well as on a variety of social
matters. In this way, the modern cartoon has become a very powerful force in influencing people in Europe
and the United States.

semi-literate people throughout China.
