Christmas pudding is a type of pudding traditionally served as part of the Christmas dinner. It has its origins in
medieval England, and is sometimes known as plum pudding or Christmas Pudding or just "pud", however this
can also refer to other kinds of boiled pudding involved dried fruit. Despite the name "plum pudding," the pudding
contains no actual plums due to the pre-Victorian usage of the word "plums" as a term for raisins. The pudding
composed of many dried fruits held together by egg and suet, sometimes moistened by treacle or molasses and
flavored with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, and other spices. The pudding is aged for a month or even a
year; the high alcohol content of the pudding prevents it from spoiling during this time.

Many households have their own recipe in Christmas pudding, some handed down through families for
generations. Essentially the recipe brings together that traditionally were expensive or luxurious ingredients —
notably the sweet spices that are so important in developing its distinctive rich aroma, and usually made with

suet. It is very dark in appearance — effectively black — as a result of the dark sugars and black treacle in most
recipes, and its long cooking time. The mixture can be moistened with the juice of citrus fruits, brandy and other
alcohol (some recipes call for dark beers such as mild, stout or porter).

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 35 to 42.

Today’s children are exhausted, and not just because one in three kids is not getting sufficient sleep.

Sleep deprivation in kids) has been found to significantly decrease academic achievement, lower standardized
achievement and intelligence test scores, stunt physical growth, encourage drug and alcohol use, heighten
moodiness and irritability, exacerbate symptoms of ADD, and dramatically increase the likelihood of car
accidents among teens. While the argument for protecting our children’s sleep time is compelling, there is
another kind of rest that is equally underestimated and equally beneficial to our children’s academic, emotional,
and creative lives: daydreaming. Daydreaming, which looks lazy from the outside, may just be the hidden
wellspring of creativity and learning in the guise of idleness.

Not all mental downtime is alike, of course. Downtime spent playing a video game or zoning out with a
television show may have its charms, but the kind of downtime I am talking about is different. I’m talking about
the kind of mind-wandering that happens when the brain is free of interruption and allowed to unhook from the
runaway train of the worries of the day. Television, videogames, and other electronic distractions prevent this
kind of mental wandering because they interrupt the flow of thoughts and memories that cement the foundation
of positive, productive daydreaming.

According to “Ode to Positive Constructive Daydreaming” – an article Kaufman cowrote with Rebecca
McMillan, for the individual, mind wandering offers the possibility of very real, personal reward, some tangible,
some more distant. These rewards include self-awareness, creative incubation, improvisation and evaluation,
memory consolidation, autobiographical planning, goal driven thought, future planning, retrieval of deeply
personal memories, reflective consideration of the meaning of events and experiences, simulating the
perspective of another person, evaluating the implications of self and others’ emotional reactions, moral
reasoning, and reflective compassion.

In other words, daydreaming only appears lazy from the outside, but viewed from the inside — or from
the perspective of a psychologist, such as Kaufman — a complicated and extremely productive neurological
process is taking place. Viewed from the inside, our children are exploring the only space where they truly have
autonomy: their own minds.

Question 35: What's the main idea of the passage?

A. Daydreaming may be beneficial to kids. B. People who like daydreaming are not lazy.
C. Children should explore their own minds. D. Children’s inner world deserves more respect.

A. Meaningful mental downtime. B. Neurological consciousness process.
