If parents bring up a child with the sole aim of turning the child into a genius (thiên tài), they will cause a disaster.
According to several leading educatonal psychologists, this is one of the biggest mistakes which ambitous parents make.
Generally, the child will be only too aware of what his parents expect, and will fail. Unrealistc parental expectatons can cause
great damage to children.


However, if parents are not too unrealistc about what they expect their children to do, but are ambitous in a sensible
way, the child may succeed in doing very well – especially if the parents are very supportve of their child. Michael Collins is very

Psychologists have debated a long time about whether a child’s upbringing can give it the ability to
do outstandingly well. Some think that it is impossible to develop genius and say that it is simply something
<i><b>a person is born with. Others, however, argue that the potential for great achievement can be develop. The</b></i>
truth lies somewhere between these two extremes.


It seems very obvious that being born with the right qualities from gifted parents will increase a
child’s ability to do well. However, this ability will be fully realized only with the right upbringing and
<i>opportunities. As one psychologist says, “To have a fast car, you need both a good engine and fuel.”</i>


Scientists have recently assessed intelligence, achievement, and ability in 50 sets of identical twins
that were separated shortly birth and brought up by different parents. They found that achievement was
based on intelligence, and later influenced by the child’s environment.



One case involving very intelligent twins was quoted. One of the twins received a normal
upbringing, and performed well. The other twin, however, was brought up by extremely supportive parents
and given every possible opportunity to develop its abilities. That twin, though starting out with the same
degree of intelligence as the other, performed even better.


<i><b>This case reflects the general principle of intelligence and ability. The more favorable the</b></i>
environment, the more a child’s intelligence and ability are developed. However, there is no link between
intelligence and socioeconomic level of a child’s family. In other words, it does not matter how poor or how
rich a family is, as this does not affect the intelligence.


Gifted people can not be created by supportive parents, but they can be developed by them. One
professor of music said that outstanding musicians usually started two or three years earlier than ordinary
performers, often because their parents had recognized their ability. These musicians then needed at least ten
years’ hard work and training in order to reach the level they were capable of attaining.


People who want to have very gifted children are given the following advice:
- Marry an intelligent person.


- Allow children to follow their own interests rather than the interests of the parents.
- Start a child’s education early but avoid pushing the child too hard.


- Encourage children to play; for example, playing with musical instrument is essential for a child who
wants to become an outstanding musician.

Lynette Long was once the principle of an elementary school. She said, “We had a school rule against

Standard usage includes those words and expressions understood, used, and accepted by a majority of the
speakers of a language in any situation regardless of the level of formality. As such, these words and
expression are well defined and listed in standard dictionaries. Colloquialisms, on the other hand, are
familiar words and idioms that are understood by almost all speakers of a language and used in informal
speed or writing, but not considered acceptable for more formal situations. Almost all idiomatic expressions


are colloquial language. Slang, refers to words and expressions understood by a large number of speakers
<b>but not accepted as appropriate formal usage by the majority. </b>


Colloquial expressions and even slang may be found in standard dictionaries but will be so identified.
Both colloquial usage and slang are more common in speech than writing. Colloquial speech often passes
into standard speech. Some slang also passes into standard speech, but other slang expressions enjoy
<b>momentary popularity followed by obscurity. In some cases, the majority never accepts certain slang</b>
<b>phrases but nevertheless retains them in their collective memories. Every generation seems to require its</b>
own set of words to describe familiar objects and events.


It has been pointed out by a number of linguists that three cultural conditions are necessary for the
creation of a large body of slang expressions. First, the introduction and acceptance of new objects and
situations in the society; second, a diverse population with a large number of subgroups; third, association
among the subgroups and the majority population.


Finally, it is worth noting that the terms “standard”, “colloquial”, and “slang” exist only as abstract labels
for scholars who study language. Only a tiny number of the speakers of any language will be aware that they
are using colloquial or slang expressions. Most speakers of English will, during appropriate situations, select
and use three types of expressions.

Diseases are a natural part of life on earth. If there were no diseases, the population would grow too

addition, it is deadly. About 70 -80% of all people who get the Marburg virus died from the disease.
However, the Marburg virus has not become a pandemic because most people die within three days of
getting the disease. This means that the virus does not have enough time to spread a large number of people.
The flu virus of 1918, on the other hand, generally took about a week to ten days to kill its victims, so it had
more time to spread.


While we may never be able to completely stop pandemics, we can make them less common. Doctors
<b>carefully monitor new diseases that they fear could become pandemics. For example, in 2002, and 2003,</b>
doctors carefully watched SARS. Their health warnings may have prevented SARS from becoming a
pandemic.

Experts in climatology and other scientists are becoming extremely concerned about the changes to our
climate which are taking place. Admittedly, climate changes have occurred on our planet before. For
example, there have been several ice ages or glacial periods.


These climatic changes, however, were different from the modern ones in that they occurred gradually
and, as far as we know, naturally. The changes currently being monitored are said to be the result not of
<b>natural causes, but of human activity. Furthermore, the rate of change is becoming alarmingly rapid.</b>


The major problem is that the planet appears to be warming up. According to some experts, this
warming process, known as global warming, is occurring at a rate unprecedented in the last 10,000 years.
The implications for the planet are very serious. Rising global temperatures could give rise to such
ecological disasters as extremely high increases in the incidence of flooding and of droughts. These in turn
could have a harmful effect on agriculture.


It is thought that this unusual warming of the Earth has been caused by so-called greenhouse gases, such
as carbon dioxide, being emitted into the atmosphere by car engines and modern industrial processes, for
example. Such gases not only add to the pollution of the atmosphere, but also create a greenhouse effect, by


which the heat of the sun is trapped. This leads to the warming up of the planet.


Politicians are also concerned about climate change and there are now regular summits on the subject,
attended by representatives from around 180 of the world’s industrialized countries. Of these summits, the
<b>most important took place in Kyoto in Japan in 1997. There it was agreed that the most industrialized</b>
countries would try to reduce the volume of greenhouse gas emissions and were given targets for this
reduction of emissions.


It was also suggested that more forests should be planted to create so-called sinks to absorb greenhouse
<b>gases. At least part of the problem of rapid climate change has been caused by too drastic deforestation.</b>


Sadly, the targets are not being met. Even more sadly, global warnings about climate changes are often
still being regarded as scaremongering.

important issue was the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which was intended to change the Constitution.
Although the ERA was not passed, there was progress in other areas. It became illegal for employers,
schools, clubs, etc. to discriminate against women. But women still find it hard to advance beyond a certain

women also face the problem of the second shift, i.e. the household chores.


In the 1980s, feminism became less popular in the US and there was less interest in solving the

important issue was the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which was intended to change the Constitution.
Although the ERA was not passed, there was progress in other areas. It became illegal for employers,
schools, clubs, etc. to discriminate against women. But women still find it hard to advance beyond a certain
<b>point in their careers, the so-called glass ceiling that prevents them from having high-level jobs. Many</b>
women also face the problem of the second shift, i.e. the household chores.



In the 1980s, feminism became less popular in the US and there was less interest in solving the

During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, almost nothing was written about the contributions

Anne Bradstreet wrote some significant poetry in the seventeenth century, Mercy Otis Warren produced the

invisible in history books.

writing about women. These writers, like most of their male counterparts, were amateur historians. Their
<i><b>writings were celebratory in nature, and they were uncritical in their selection and use of sources.</b></i>


During the nineteenth century, however, certain feminists showed a keen sense of history by keeping records
of activities in which women were engaged. National, regional, and local women’s organizations compiled
accounts of their doings. Personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, and souvenirs were saved and
stored. These sources from the core of the two greatest collections of women’s history in the United States
one at the Elizabeth and Arthur Schlesinger Library at Radcliffe College, and the other the Sophia Smith
Collection at Smith College. Such sources have provided valuable materials for later Generations of


historians.


Despite the gathering of more information about ordinary women during the nineteenth Century, most of the
writing about women conformed to the “great women” theory of History, just as much of mainstream
American history concentrated on “great men.” To demonstrate that women were making significant
contributions to American life, female authors singled out women leaders and wrote biographies, or else
important women produced their autobiographies. Most of these leaders were involved in public life as
<i><b>reformers, activists working for women’s right to vote, or authors, and were not representative at all of the</b></i>
great of ordinary woman. The lives of ordinary people continued, generally, to be untold in the American
histories being published.
