<b>* REPORTED SPEECH</b>
<b>1. Các Loại câu tường thuật:</b>

Có 2 loại câu tường thuật: Câu tường thuật trực tiếp và câu tường thuật gián tiếp
- Câu tường thuật trực tiếp thuật lại đúng nguyên văn câu nói và câu nói đó được bỏ
trong dấu ngoặc kép

e.g: My mom said: “Don’t forget your notebook”
Mẹ tơi nói: “Đừng bỏ qn vở nhé”

- Câu tường thuật gián tiếp được vận dụng những từ ngữ được nói trực tiếp để diễn tả
lại. Nguyên văn câu nói được diễn tả lại và không đặt trong dấu ngoặc kép

E.g: Direct speech - He said: “Give me a phone call when you come home”
=> Reported speech - He told me to give him a phone call when I came home
<b> Anh ấy bảo gọi cho anh khi khi tôi về tới nhà</b>

Trong lời dẫn gián tiếp bao giờ cũng có 2 mệnh đề: mệnh đề chính chứa động từ dẫn
và mệnh đề tường thuật chứa nội dung của câu nói trực tiếp. 2 mệnh đề thường được
nối với nhau bằng liên từ that

<b>2. Câu tường thuật là câu thuật lại một cách gián tiếp lời của người khác. Muốn</b>
chuyển từ câu kế (statement) trực tiếp sang câu gián tiếp chúng ta phải xem xét một
số vấn đề sau:

<b>* Một số thay đổi về thì (Tense changes):</b>

+ Nếu động từ tường thuật (reporting verb) của câu ờ thì q khứ thì phải lùi động từ
chính về quá khứ một bậc khi chuyển từ lời nói trực tiếp (direct speech) sang lời nói
gián tiêp (indirect reported speech) theo quy tắc sau:

+ Nếu động từ tường thuật ở thì hiện tại thì thì (tense) của động từ chính được giữ
ngun khi chuyển lời nói trực tiếp sang gián tiếp.

Ví dụ:

 Direct speech:

“I’m arriving at about 6.00,” says she.
 Reported speech:

She says (that) she’s arriving at about 6.00.
Cơ ấy nói (rằng) khoảng 6 giờ cô ấy sẽ đến.
<b>Lưu ý: </b>

 Có thể dùng hoặc khơng dùng “that” sau động từ tưòng thuật.
 says/ say to + o —> tells/ tell + o

 said to + o —> told + o

Ví dụ: He told (= said to) Helen (that) he didn’t like cofee.
Anh ấy cho Helen biết (rằng) anh ấy khơng thích cà phê.

 Một số động từ khơng thay đổi khi chuyển sang lời nói gián tiếp:

would —> would, could -» could, might -» might, should —> should, ought to -»
ought to

<b>Một số chuyển đối khác (Some other changes):</b>

Khi chuyển từ lời nói trực tiếp sang gián tiếp mà độna từ tường thuật ở thì quá khứ
thì các trạng từ chi thời gian và nơi chốn và đại từ chỉ định được chuyển đổi theo quy
tắc sau:

tomorrow => the next day/ the following day
yesterday => the day before/ the previous day
ago => before

now => then

next/ on Tuesday => the next/ following Tuesday

last Tuesday => the previous Tuesday/ the Tuesday before
the day after tomorrow => in two days' time/ two days later

- Reported speech:

Mary said (that) she was leaving there the next day.
