The scarcity of tigers and African elephants is more and more serious. They are endangered
because poachers hunt them in order to sell tiger pelts and elephant ivory.

At least 4,000 elephants are killed each year in order to meet the global demand for ivory, which
is used to make carvings, jewelry and other products although it is illegal to sell ivory since 1989
anywhere.

“Americans should be aware that there is still a problem with elephant poaching and loss to the
illegal ivory trade,” Ginette Hemley, Fund’s vice president for species conservation, told The

Washington Post in September. And so our message is “Don’t buy it, and don’t take that chance”.

A Wildlife Fund report states that the United States seized 8,300 illegal ivory items between 1995
and 2002. Each week there are about 1,000 ivory auctions, the report said.

As for tigers, their parts are used in traditional Chinese medicine. Tiger bones are used as a pain
reliever in traditional medicine. Even tiger’s whiskers are sold because some people in Asia think they
are a good-luck charm – like a rabbit’s foot in the United States. “ Part of our job is education,” said
Professor Dillon. “ The other part is law enforcement. So we have more than one strategy.”

<b> Read the passage and choose the correct answers:</b>

Scientists often divide resources into two groups: renewable and non– renewable. When a resource
is used, it takes some times to replace it. If the resource can be replaced quickly and easily, it is called
renewable. If it cannot be replaced quickly and easily, it is renewable. All fossil fuels are
non-renewable resources. Solar energy, air, and water are usually called non-renewable because there is an
unlimited supply.

However, this definition may change if people are not careful with these resources. The amount of
solar energy that reaches the earth depends on the atmosphere. If the atmosphere is polluted, the solar
energy that reaches the earth may be dangerous. If humans continue to pollute the air, it will not contain
the correct amounts of these gases.

Many resources are limited and non- renewable, and many are in danger of pollution. As a
consequence, resources must be conserved and the environment protected. Conservation must become an
important part of everyone’s life.

46. How many kinds of resources are mentioned in the passage?

After World War II, a number of Asian countries became independent. Many of the new independent
Asian countries wanted to use a new type of competition where Asian dominance should not be shown
by violence and should be strengthened by mutual understanding. In August 1948, during the 14th
Olympic Games in London, Indian representative Guru Dutt Sondhi proposed to sports leaders of the
Asian teams the idea of having discussions about holding the Asian Games. They agreed to form the
Asian Athletic Federation. A preparatory committee was set up to draft the charter for the Asian amateur

athletic federation. In February, 1949, the Asian athletic federation was formed and used the name Asian
Games Federation. It was decided to hold the first Asian Games in 1951 in New Delhi the capital of
India. They added that the Asian Games would be regularly held once every four years.

Stamp collecting is the collecting of postage stamps and related objects, such as
envelopes or packages with stamps on them. It is one of the world’s most popular hobbies, with estimates

<b> 1. Read the following passage and choose the best answers by circling A, B, C or D. </b>

Long ago a lot of people thought the moon was a god. Other people thought it was just a light in the
sky. And others thought it was a big ball of cheese.

Then telescopes were made. And men saw that the moon was really another world. They wondered
what it was like. They dreamed of going there.

On July 20, 1969, that dream came true. Two American men landed on the moon. Their names were
Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin.

The first thing the men found was that the moon is covered with dust. The dust is so thick that the
men left footprints where they walked. Those were the first marks a living thing had ever made on the
moon. And they could stay there for years and years. There is no wind or rain to wipe them off.

The two men walked on the moon for hours. They picked up rocks to bring back to earth for study.
They dug up dirt to bring back. They set up machines to find out things people wanted to know. Then
they climbed back into their moon landing craft.

Next day the landing craft roared as the two men took off from the moon. They joined Michael
Collins in the spaceship that waited for them above the moon. Then they were off on their long trip back
to earth. Behind them they left the plains and tall mountains of the moon. They left the machines they
had set up. And they left footprints that may last forever.

<b>THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH</b>

Buzz Aldrin was a part of the Apollo 11 mission in 1969 when man first walked on the moon.
Neil Armstrong went first, followed by Buzz. Nothing in all his training had been prepared by him for
that moment, and he has been traveling the world ever since, reliving the experience.

He was born in New Jersey in 1930, and he graduated from West Point Military Academy. He
served as a pilot in Korea and West Germany, and 1966 he was chosen an astronaut.

Apollo 11 was launched to the moon on July 16. Four days later they landed near the sea of
Tranquility. The mission ended on July 24, with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.

On coming back to earth, he became very depressed, and suffered from alcoholism. He had
married for the first time when he was young, and had three children . His second marriage lasted a very
short time. Fortunately, he seems to have found happiness and stability with his third wife, Loris Driggs
Cannon, who saved him from self –destruction. They now live with their three dogs in California and six
cars “for fun”. He has written his autobiography and a science fiction book, called <i>Encounter with Tiber,</i>
which was published in 1996. He now travels the world, giving lecture tours and raising funds for space
exploration.

One of the most famous monuments in the world, the Statue of Liberty, was presented to the United
States of America in the nineteenth century by the people of France. The great statue, which was
designed by the sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, took ten years to complete. The actual figure was made of
copper supported by a metal framework which had been especially constructed by Eiffel. Before it could
be transported to the United States, a site had to be found for it and a pedestal had to be built. The site
chosen was an island at the entrance of New York Harbour. By 1884, a statue which was 151 feet tall had
been erected in Paris. The following year, it was taken to pieces and sent to America. By the end of
October 1886, the statue had been put together again and it was officially presented to the American
people by Bartholdi. Ever since then, the great monument has been a symbol of liberty for the millions of
people who have passed through New York Harbour to make their homes in America.

Throughout history there have been many great explorers. Have you, for example, heard of Marco
Polo, the famous Italian traveler? He was the first European to travel to China. He arrived in China in the
late 13th century. About 200 years later, Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain by ship. He was
looking for a new way to reach India. However, as you probably know, he didn’t reach India. He landed
in America. Five hundred years after Columbus in the 1930s a famous explorer named Richard Byrd was
one of the first persons to fly over both the North and the South Poles. Today we continue to explore this
world and are studying to explore other worlds, too. In the 1930s Russian and American scientists sent
many unmanned spacecraft to the moon. These spacecraft sent back very valuable information about the
moon. Then on July 16th 1969 the first manned spaceship to the moon left earth. On that day Apollo 11
blasted off with three American astronauts on board. Four days after blast – off, two of these astronauts
landed on the moon. They later explored the surface of the moon. About two days after landing on the

moon, they started back to the earth. They arrived safely back on earth a few days later. Today we are
sending unmanned spacecraft to other planets. In the future, we might walk on Mars or Venus the way
we did on the moon. We might even travel to other galaxies. Who knows? One thing we know for sure is
that we will continue to explore this world and other worlds, too.

<b>Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.</b>

The Origins of the Olympic Games can be traced back to ancient Greece, to as far back as 776 B.C. It
was a Greek tradition to hold athletic competitions every four years in honor of their gods or dead heroes.
The prizes awarded to the winners of each event in those days were a crown of olive and a palm
branch. Although this may seem meaningless in modern times, the true prize lay in the honor of having
won the event. The winners were given places of honor on public occasions. In some town they were
even exempted from paying taxes.

The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896. Since then, nations from around the
world have been meeting every four years to compete against one another. New Olympic records are set
every time they meet. The only exception to this quadrennial event was in 1944, when the Olympic
Games were not held because of the Second World War.

<b>39.</b> When were the first Olympic Games held?

<b>40.</b> What was the purpose of the ancient Olympic Games?
