Marriage is an ancient religious and legal practice celebrated around the world. However, wedding
customs vary from country to country.

The Wedding Dress: In many countries, it is customary for the bride to wear a white dress as a symbol
of purity. The tradition of wearing a special white dress only for the wedding ceremony started around 150
years ago. Before that, most women could not afford to buy a dress that they would only wear once. Now,
bridal dresses can be bought in a variety of styles. In some Asian countries and in the Middle East, colors
of joy and happiness like red or orange other than white are worn by the bride or used as part of the
wedding ceremony.

The Wedding Rings: In many cultures, couples exchange rings, usually made of golf or silver and worn
on the third finger of the left or right hand, during the marriage ceremony. The circular shape of the ring is
symbolic of the couple's eternal union. In Brazil, it is traditional to have the rings engraved with the
bride's name on the groom’s ring, and vice versa.

Flowers: Flowers play an important role in most weddings. Roses are said to be the flowers of love,
and because they usually bloom in June, this has become the most popular month for weddings in many
countries. After the wedding ceremony, in many countries the bride throws her bouquet into a crowd of
well-wishers – usually her single female friends. The person who catches this bouquet will be the next one
to marry.

Gifts: In Chinese cultures, wedding guests give gifts of money to the newly-weds in small red
envelopes. Money is also an appropriate gift at Korean and Japanese wedding. In many Western countries,

for example in the U.K, wedding guests give the bride and groom household items that they may need for
their new home. In Russia, rather than receiving gifts, the bride and groom provide gifts to their guests
instead.

With the continued internationalization of the modern world, wedding customs that originated in one
part of the world are crossing national boundaries and have been incorporated into marriage ceremonies in
other countries.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.

An Amazing Invention

Look at your hand, and it might not seem very interesting at first, but it is an amazing tool. In fact, the
human hand is as complex and as useful as a high tech machine.

This might sound strange to you, but the development of the human hand changed the world. For
example, the thumb helped human beings become the smartest and most powerful animals on the Earth.
Your thumb is important because it faces your other fingers. This allows you to hold things, like tools.
Being able to hold tools allowed our ancient ancestors to build things and become more advanced. It is

also possible that when we developed thumbs and started to use tools, our brains developed faster as well.

And how about this? Your fingers are the only parts of your body that are moved by a “remote
control”. A remote control is the small device that you use to change the channel on your television. Your
fingers are controlled by remote because they don’t have any muscles. You control your fingers with the
muscles in your palms. The palms are connected to the fingers by tendons. The palms pull the tendons, and
move them the same way a string moves a puppet.

Every part of the human body is complicated, but the hand is especially complicated. It has a total of
29 bones. There are 34 different muscles that move the fingers and the thumb. Seventeen of those muscles
are in the palm, and 18 are in the forearm. The human hand also has 48 nerves and 30 arteries. An artery is
like a vein, but it carries blood away from the heart.

Human beings are not as strong or as fast as other animals. However, our ancient ancestors were able
to rule the world for two reasons. First, they were intelligent. Second, they had these amazing instruments
called hands. There is no other invention like them in the world.

Câu 43: What is important about the thumb?

A. It has muscles on it. B. It is longer our other fingers.

C. It faces our other fingers. D. It has 29 bones.

Câu 44: The word “ancestors” in paragraph 2 most probably means________.

A. descendants B. workers C. forefathers D. residents

Câu 45: Which statement is true?

A. There are 34 muscles that control fingers. B. The hand has 48 arteries.

C. A remote control is a very large machine. D. Our thumbs make us less intelligent.

Câu 46: The word “tendons”in paragraph 3 most probably means________.

A. parts that join fingers to the thumb B. parts that join a muscle to a bone

C. parts that join the heart to the veins D. parts that join the palm to a muscle

Câu 47: The word “it”in paragraph 4 refers to________.

A. artery B. vein C. blood D. body

Câu 48: According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A. Our fingers are considered to be directed by a remote control.

B. The palms pull the muscles in the fingers.

C. The tendons help the palm move the fingers.

D. The remote control that directs fingers are the muscles in the palm.

Câu 49: What does the last sentence of the last paragraph mean?

A. There are no other animals that have hands.

B. Hands cannot help us invent things.

C. Many other things are like hands.

D. Hands are different from every invention in the world.

Câu 50: What would be another good title for the passage?
