Each society has its own beliefs, attitudes, customs, behaviors, and social habits. These give people a

sense of who they are, how they are supposed to behave, and what they should or should not do. These 'rules'
reflect the 'culture' of a country.

People become conscious of such rules when they meet people from different cultures. For example,
in some cultures, being on time can mean turning up several hours late for an appointment, even for a
business meeting; in others, 3 p.m. means 3 p.m. Also, the rules about when to eat vary from culture to
culture. Many North Americans and Europeans are used to having three mealtimes a day and organizing
their timetable around them. In other countries, on the other hand, it’s not the custom to have strict rules like
this - people eat when they want to, and every family has its own timetable.

When people visit or live in a country for the first time, they are often surprised at the differences that
exist between their own culture and the culture in the other country. The most common way of comparing
two cultures is in terms of their differences - not their similarities. For some people, traveling abroad is the
thing they enjoy most in life; for others, though, cultural differences make them feel uncomfortable,
frightened, or even insecure. This is known as "culture shock".

When you are visiting a foreign country, it is important to understand and appreciate cultural
differences. This can help people avoid misunderstandings, develop friendships more easily, and feel more
comfortable when traveling or living abroad.

Here are several things to do to avoid “culture shock”:

 Avoid quickly judgment; try to understand people in other culture from their own point of view.
 Become aware of what is going on around you, and why?

 Don’t think of your cultural habits as “right” and other people as “wrong”.
 Be willing to try new things and to have new experiences.

 Try to appreciate and understand other people’s values.

 Think about your own culture to see how it influences your attitudes and actions.
 Avoid having negative stereotypes about foreigners and cultures.

 Show interests in as well as respect, sincerity acceptance and concern for things that are important to

other people.

<i><b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct</b></i>
<i><b>answer to each of the questions from 43 to 50.</b></i>

If we took a look at how people in Europe communicated just one hundred years ago, we would be
very surprised to find out that English was hardly used outside the United Kingdom. The language most
commonly used between people of different nationalities, and particularly the aristocracy, was French. In
fact, French was the language of diplomacy, culture and education. However, that is not the case nowadays.
English has replaced French as the international language of communication. Today, there are more people
who speak English as a second language than people who speak it as a first language.

There are many reasons why English has become the language of international communication.
Britain’s colonization of many parts of the world had something to do with it, but it is mainly due to
America’s rise to the position of major world power. This helped spread popular American culture
throughout the world bringing the language with it.

But is it good that English has spread to all parts of the world so quickly? Language specialists seem
to be divided over this issue. There are those who claim that it is important to have a language that the
people in our increasingly globalized world have in common. According to others, English is associated with
a particular culture and therefore promotes that culture at the expense of others. Linguists have suggested
“Esperanto”, an artificially put-together language, as a solution to international communication problems but
without success. So English will continue being the world language until some other language, maybe

Chinese, which is the most widely-spoken native language in the world, takes over as the world’s
international language instead of English.

<i><b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct </b></i>
<i><b>answer to each of the questions that follow.</b></i>

Simply being bilingual doesn't qualify someone to interpret. Interpreting is not only a mechanical
process of converting one sentence in language A into the same sentence in language B. Rather, it's a
complex art in which thoughts and idioms that have no obvious counterparts from tongue to tongue - or
words that have several meanings must be quickly transformed in such a way that the message is clearly and
accurately expressed to the listener.

At one international conference, an American speaker said, “<i><b>You can't make a silk purse out of a</b></i>
<i><b>sows ear</b>”, which meant nothing to the Spanish audience. The interpretation was, “<b>A monkey in a silk dress</b></i>
<i><b>is still a monkey</b></i>” - an idiom the Spanish understood and that expressed the same idea.

There are 2 kinds of interpreters, simultaneous and consecutive. The former, sitting in a separated
booth, usually at a large multilingual conference, speaks to listeners wearing headphones, interpreting what a
foreign language speaker says - actually a sentence behind. Consecutive interpreters are the ones most
international negotiations use. They are employed for smaller meetings without sound booths and
headphones. Consecutive interpretation also requires two-person teams. A foreign speaker says his piece
while the interpreter, using a special shorthand, takes notes and during a pause, tells the client what was said.
Question 36: What is the purpose of the passage?

A. To explain the scope of interpreting.

B. To differentiate between simultaneous and consecutive interpreters.
C. To state the qualifications of an interpreter.

D. To point out the importance of an interpreter.

Question 37: The author implies that most people have the opinion that the skill of interpreting is ______.
A. simpler than it really is B. very complex and demanding

C. highly valued and admired D. based on principles of business
Question 38: The example “<i><b>You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear</b></i>” is used to ______.

A. show the differences in language A and language B
B. stress the importance of word for word translation

C. emphasize the need for translation of the meaning of what is said
D. point out the difference in attributes of animals in English and Spanish
Question 39: A precondition of being a translator is ______.

A. being a linguist B. being bilingual

C. being able to use high-tech equipment D. working well with people

Question 40: What is a difference mentioned between a simultaneous interpreter and a consecutive interpreter?
A. The money they are paid. B. The size of group with whom they work.
C. Their proficiency in the language. D. The type of dictionary they use.

<i><b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct</b></i>
<i><b>answer to each of the questions that follow.</b></i>

Hotels were among the earliest facilities that <i><b>bound</b></i> the United States together. They were both creatures
and creators of communities, as well as symptoms of the frenetic quest for community. Even in the first part
of the nineteenth century, Americans were already forming the habit of gathering from all corners of the
nation for both public and private, business and pleasure purposes. Conventions were the new occasions, and
hotels were distinctively American facilities making conventions possible. The first national convention of a
major party to choose a candidate for President (that of <i><b>the National Republican party</b></i>, which met on
December 12, 1831, and nominated Henry Clay for President) was held in Baltimore, at a hotel that was then
reputed to be the best in the country. The presence in Baltimore of Barnum's City Hotel, a six-story building
with two hundred apartments, helps explain why many other early national political conventions were held
there.

In the longer run, too, American hotels made other national conventions not only possible but pleasant
and convivial. The growing custom of regularly <i><b>assembling</b></i> from afar the representatives of all kinds of
groups - not only for political conventions, but also for commercial, professional, learned, and avocational
<i><b>ones</b></i> - in turn supported the multiplying hotels. By mid-twentieth century, conventions accounted for over a
third of the yearly room occupancy of all hotels in the nation; about eighteen thousand different conventions

were held annually with a total attendance of about ten million persons.

Nineteenth-century American hotelkeepers, who were no longer the genial, deferential “hosts” of the
eighteenth-century European inn, became leading citizens. Holding a large stake in the community, they
exercised power to make <i><b>it</b></i> prosper. As owners or managers of the local “palace of the public”, they were
makers and shapers of a principal community attraction. Travelers from abroad were mildly shocked by this
high social position.

Question 43: What is the main topic of the passage?
A. The importance of hotels in American culture
B. How American hotels differed from European hotels

C. Why conventions are held at hotels D. The size of early American hotels
Question 44: The word “<i><b>bound</b></i>” is closest in meaning to ________.

Question 46: The word “<i><b>assembling</b></i> ” is closest in meaning to_______.

A. motivating B. announcing C. contracting D. gathering
Question 47: The word “<i><b>ones</b></i>” refers to_______.

Question 48: The word “ <i><b>it</b></i>” refers to_______.

Question 49: It can be inferred form the passage that early hotelkeepers in the United States were_______.

passage?

A. They were important to the community

B. Travelers from abroad did not enjoy staying in them.
C. People used them for both business and pleasure.
D. Conventions were held in them.

</div>
<span class='text_page_counter'>(10)</span><div class='page_container' data-page=10>

people in our increasingly globalized world have in common.

<i><b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct</b></i>
<i><b>answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.</b></i>

Question 36: What is a difference mentioned between a simultaneous interpreter and a consecutive interpreter?
A. The money they are paid. B. The size of group with whom they work.
C. Their proficiency in the language. D. The type of dictionary they use.

Question 37: The word “converting” is closest in meaning to _____.

A. understanding B. changing C. reading D. concluding

A. To explain the scope of interpreting.

B. To differentiate between simultaneous and consecutive interpreters.
C. To state the qualifications of an interpreter.

D. To point out the importance of an interpreter.

Question 43: The word “<i><b>assembling</b></i> ” is closest in meaning to_______.

<i><b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct</b></i>
<i><b>answer to each of the questions from 15 to 22.</b></i>

This helped spread popular American culture
throughout the world bringing the language with it.

people in our increasingly globalized world have in common.

<i><b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct</b></i>
<i><b>answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.</b></i>

Question 44. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?

Question 36: The example “<i><b>You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear</b></i>” is used to ______.

A. show the differences in language A and language B
B. stress the importance of word for word translation

C. emphasize the need for translation of the meaning of what is said
D. point out the difference in attributes of animals in English and Spanish

Question 40: What is a difference mentioned between a simultaneous interpreter and a consecutive interpreter?
A. The money they are paid. B. The size of group with whom they work.
C. Their proficiency in the language. D. The type of dictionary they use.

A. To explain the scope of interpreting.

Question 43: The word “ <i><b>it</b></i>” refers to_______.

A. European inn B. community C. public D. host

Question 44: It can be inferred form the passage that early hotelkeepers in the United States were_______.
A. professional builders B. active politicians

Question 45: Which of the following statements about early American hotels is NOT mentioned in the
passage?

A. They were important to the community B. Travelers from abroad did not enjoy staying in them.
C. People used them for both business and pleasure. D. Conventions were held in them.

Question 46: What is the main topic of the passage?
A. The importance of hotels in American culture
B. How American hotels differed from European hotels

C. Why conventions are held at hotels D. The size of early American hotels
Question 47: The word “<i><b>assembling</b></i> ” is closest in meaning to_______.

<i><b>answer to each of the questions from 1 to 8.</b></i>

Question 1. The linguists’opinion on the spread of English is________.

A. split B. positive C. negative D. undecided

Question 2. The author believes that ________.
A. English is easier to learn than Chinese

B. English will probably be replaced as an international language

C. Chinese is going to be the next language of international communication

Each society has its own beliefs, attitudes, customs, behaviors, and social habits. These give people a
sense of who they are, how they are supposed to behave, and what they should or should not do. These 'rules'
reflect the 'culture' of a country.

</div>
<span class='text_page_counter'>(28)</span><div class='page_container' data-page=28>

In the longer run, too, American hotels made other national conventions not only possible but pleasant

<i><b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct</b></i>
<i><b>answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.</b></i>

Question 44. Which statement is TRUE according to the passage?

A. There are no similarities between a culture in one country and that in another.

Chinese, which is the most widely-spoken native language in the world, takes over as the world’s
international language instead of English.

words that have several meanings must be quickly transformed in such a way that the message is clearly and
accurately expressed to the listener.
