PART 2. READING (10 points)
A. Read the following passage and do the tasks that follow:
About half of British young people between the ages of 12 and 16 read teen magazines!
Two of the most popular magazines for girls are ‘Sugar’ and ‘Bliss’. They have glossy, colorful
covers and include beauty and fashion, celebrity gossip, real-life stories, horoscopes, quizzes,

and problem pages. Of course, boys don’t usually find these magazines very interesting!
Instead, they buy music magazines like ‘NME’ or magazines about sports, like ‘Shoot’ or
‘Match’.
Usually, teen magazines contain a lot of language that only teenagers use! They might use
“celeb” instead of celebrity, for example, or “fave” instead of favorite. They also say “lads”
instead of “boys”, “dosh” instead of “money”, and “natter” instead of “talk to your friends”!
This makes the magazines more attractive to teenagers and easier to understand.
On a more serious note though, a lot of girls’ magazines can help: teens find solutions to
problems they don’t feel comfortable discussing with their parents. That’s why the problem pages
in these magazines are very popular. In fact, many teenage girls buy them just for the problem
page.
For questions 1 to 6, state whether the following sentences are TRUE (T) or FALSE
(F).
1. Approximately half of young people aged from 12 to 16 in Britain read magazines.
2. ‘Sugar’ and ‘Bliss’ are the most well-known magazines in Britain.
3. In Britain, most popular magazines for girls have glossy, colorful covers.
4. Boys usually prefer music and sport magazines to those related to beauty and fashion.
5. The phrase “talk to your friends” is often presented as “fave” in some magazines for teenagers.
6. The problem pages in teen magazines are very popular.
Your answers:
1. ______; 2. ______; 3. ______; 4. ______; 5. ______; 6. ______.
For questions 7-12, choose the best answer among A, B, C, or D.
7. According to the passage, all of the following items are mentioned as themes that girls
