If parents bring up a child with the sole aim of turning the child into a genius, they will cause
disaster. This is one of the biggest mistakes which ambitious parents make. Unrealistic
parental expectations can cause great damage to children.

However, if parents are not too unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but
ambitious in a sensible way, the child may succeed in doing very well- especially if the
parents are very supportive of their child.

Do An Duc is very lucky. He is crazy about music, and his parents help him a lot by taking
to concerts and arranging piano and violin lessons for him. Although Do An Duc's parents
know very little about music, they have tried their best to help their son with his interest.
However, they never make him enter music competition if he is unwilling.

Duc's friend, Vu Hoang Duy, however, is not so lucky. Although his parents are successful
musicians, they set too high a standard for Duy. They want their son to be successful as
they are so they enter him for every piano competition held. They are very unhappy when
he doesn't win. "When I was at your age, I used to win every competition I entered," Duy's
father tells him. Duy is always afraid that he will disappoint his parents and now he always
seems quiet and unhappy.

Passage 2

Many people now think that teachers give students too much homework. They saw that it is
unnecessary for children to work at home in their free time. Moreover, they argue that most
teachers do not properly plan the homework tasks they give to students. The result is that
students have to repeat tasks which they have already done at school.

Recently in Greece many parents complained about the difficult homework which teachers
gave to their children. The parents said that most of the homework was a waste of time,
and they wanted to stop it. Spain and Turkey are two countries which stopped homework
recently. In Denmark, Germany and several other countries in Europe, teachers

Most people agree that homework is unfair. A student who can do his homework in a quiet
and comfortable room is in a much better position than a student who does his homework in
a small, noisy room with the television on. Some parents help their children with their

homework. Other parents take no interest at all in their children’s homework.

It is important, however, that teachers talk to parents about homework. A teacher should
suggest suitable tasks for parents to do with their children. Parents are often better at
teaching their own children!

Music influences people in different ways or the same person differently at different times.
Music may seem to influence people differently. That is because people can react

differently to the music. We are able to apply a choosing process to the music we hear. If
someone hates jazz, then a jazz piece with a positive effect will probably not make him feel
good. A happy song might appear to make an angry person angrier, yet it is not the music
itself that is creating the anger; rather it is the positive effect of the music. The angry person

does not want to accept the song's happy feeling: it points out his already existing anger,
and makes that anger come to the surface. When a piece of music is played and we are
listening to it, our body, mind, and feelings are being affected. The musicians of ancient
cultures such as China, India, Turkey and Greece understood the effects of music. In fact,
Pathagoras, in ancient Greece, introduced a whole science that concerned them. Because
the musicians of these ancient cultures understood these effects, they created music that
was positive, uplifting, and beneficial. Once the effects of music are better understood, the
next step is to gain a better understanding of the music around us, and what effect it is
actually having.
