While you may not think it at first, there are numerous cultural differences between the US and the UK that

In general, Americans are much more open than Britons. Friends and even acquaintances discuss personal
thoughts and opinions that might seem private in the UK. Do not feel embarrassed if an American asks you a

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.

Family life in the United States is changing. Fifty or sixty years ago, the wife was called a "housewife". She
cleaned, cooked, and cared for the children. The husband earned the money for the family. He was usually out
working all day. He came home tired in the evening, so he did not do much housework. And he did not see the
children very much, except on weekends.

(5)

housework now? Who is going to take care of the children?

Many families solve the problem of housework by sharing it. In these families, the husband and wife agree
to do different jobs around the house, or they take turns doing each job. For example, the husband always
cooks dinner and the wife always does the laundry. Or the wife cooks dinner on some nights and the husband
cooks dinner on other nights.

Then there is the question of the children. In the past, many families got help with childcare from
grandparents. Now families usually do not live near their relatives. The grandparents are often too far away to
help in a regular way. More often, parents have to pay for child care help. The help may be a babysitter or a
day-care center. The problem with this kind of help is the high cost. It is possible only for couples with jobs that
pay well.

Parents may get another kind of help form the companies they work for. Many companies now let people
with children work part-time. That way, parents can spend more time with their children. Some husbands may
even stop working for a while to stay with the children. For these men there is a new word: they are called

"househusbands". In the USA more and more men are becoming househusbands every year.

These changes in the home mean changes in the family. Fathers can learn to understand their children
better, and the children can get to know their fathers better. Husbands and wives may also find changes in their
marriage. They, too, may have a better understanding of each other.

Question 43. The changes in the American home mentioned in this passage may ___________________.
A. cause problems for a marriage B. not change the children at all

C. not happen D. help families

A. look after B. bring about C. take after D. give up

Question 45. The word "laundry" in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ___________________.
A. washing and ironing B. tidying up C. cooking and washing up D. shopping

C. went out to work D. were housewives

A. parents who work part-time

B. children who spend more time with fathers than mothers
C. fathers who spend more time with their children

D. husbands who stop working to stay with the children
Question 48. Nowadays, there are ___________________.

A. more housewives than before

B. more and more women staying with the children all day
C. more work outside the home than before

D. more women going out to work than before

Question 49. It can be inferred from paragraph 4 that ___________________.

to do different jobs around the house, or they take turns doing each job.

Husbands and wives may also find changes in their
marriage. They, too, may have a better understanding of each other.

answer to each of the questions.

These days, however, more and more women work outside the home. They cannot stay with the children
all day. They, too, come home tired in the evening. They do not want to spend the evening cooking dinner and
cleaning up. They do not have time to clean the house and do the laundry. So who is going to do the
housework now? Who is going to take care of the children?

Many families solve the problem of housework by sharing it. In these families, the husband and wife agree
to do different jobs around the house, or they take turns doing each job. For example, the husband always
cooks dinner and the wife always does the laundry. Or the wife cooks dinner on some nights and the husband
cooks dinner on other nights.

Husbands and wives may also find changes in their
marriage. They, too, may have a better understanding of each other.

to do different jobs around the house, or they take turns doing each job.

While you may not think it at first, there are numerous cultural differences between the US and the UK that
you will likely encounter.

In general, Americans are much more open than Britons. Friends and even acquaintances discuss personal
thoughts and opinions that might seem private in the UK. Do not feel embarrassed if an American asks you a

assuming you would like to share them.

childhood stories than you care to listen to. Americans will be interested in your experiences and background as

While you may not think it at first, there are numerous cultural differences between the US and the UK that
you will likely encounter.

In general, Americans are much more open than Britons. Friends and even acquaintances discuss personal
thoughts and opinions that might seem private in the UK. Do not feel embarrassed if an American asks you a
seemingly private question. He or she is most likely sincerely curious about your thoughts and feelings and is
assuming you would like to share them.

(27)

The sense of humor differs from one side of the Atlantic to the other. Americans tend to be less dry or
sarcastic. Some Americans may feel offended if they do not understand your humor, but after a brief explanation
they will be laughing along with you.

Americans tend to believe that individuals control their circumstances by how much they work. This work
ethic is reflected in American attitudes towards academics. Don't be surprised if you meet students who spend a
vast majority of their free time studying in the library.

Americans also tend to care much more for punctuality than their UK counterparts. Everything from classes
to a lunch date is expected to start right on time. Along with punctuality, most Americans move at a faster pace
than that in the UK. For example, dinners at a restaurant, even a sit-down restaurant, can be finished in under a
half-hour. Additionally, you will not have to ask for the bill. It will be brought to you as soon as it is clear to your
waiter or waitress that you are finished ordering more items.

These days, however, more and more women work outside the home. They cannot stay with the children all
day. They, too, come home tired in the evening. They do not want to spend the evening cooking dinner and
cleaning up. They do not have time to clean the house and do the laundry. So who is going to do the
housework now? Who is going to take care of the children?

Many families solve the problem of housework by sharing it. In these families, the husband and wife agree to
do different jobs around the house, or they take turns doing each job. For example, the husband always cooks
dinner and the wife always does the laundry. Or the wife cooks dinner on some nights and the husband cooks
dinner on other nights.

It is possible only for couples with jobs that
pay well.

(29)

These changes in the home mean changes in the family. Fathers can learn to understand their children
better, and the children can get to know their fathers better. Husbands and wives may also find changes in their
marriage. They, too, may have a better understanding of each other.

Question 25. It can be inferred from paragraph 4 that ___________________.
A. in the past, grandparents did not help the couples with child care
B. grandparents can help care the children in a regular way
