BRUSSELS

Brussels is Belgium’s capital city and its administrative, financial, and cultural center. It has two
official languages, French and Dutch, and a population of almost a million inhabitants. It is also the
‘capital of the EU’, as the European Parliament is there. The headquarters of NATO are in Brussels
and many multinational companies have their European head offices in the city.

READING PASSAGE 2

Read the passage and questions below. For each question, circle the letter next to the correct
answer (A, B, C, or D).

The Ageing Future

Since 1950, the world’s population has almost tripled. All of us are living longer than any
generation in human history.

In the year 2000 there were 100,000 people around the planet who were 100 years old or more. Yet,
when they were born, before aero planes and antibiotics and atom bombs, before cars and
computers, there were very few centenarians anywhere in the world. Now millions of people will
live into their 70s, 80s, and 90s and centenarians will no longer be rare.

Advances in medicine and public sanitation mean that infectious diseases no longer kill millions of
children and adults as they did in the past. Healthier food and better health care have made stronger,
fitter bodies. Average life expectancy has gone up by 25 years and more in many parts of the world.
At the same time the contraceptive pills has had a huge impact on world population levels since the
1970s. Women are having fewer babies and more people are living longer, so the balance between
the number of young and old people in the population is changing dramatically. According to the

OECD, over the next 25 years the number of pensioners will rise by 70 million, while the
working-age population will rise by only 5 million.

But this is good news rather than bad. To be old is not to be ill. Studies have shown that healthy
food and regular physical exercise keep mind and body young, and that it’s never too late to start
getting fit or learning new things. At 72 the remarkable Helen Klein successfully completed the first
Eco-Challenge, a 480-kilometer desert adventure race with swimming, canoeing, white-water
rafting, running, horse-riding, and rock climbing.

1. What has happened to the world’s population since 1950?
A. it has increased about 3 times.

B. it has decreased dramatically.
C. it has increased about 2 times.
D. it has decreased a little.

2. Why do fewer people die from infectious diseases today than in the past?
A. Because of the contraceptive pills

B. Because of advances in medicine and public sanitation
C. Because of cars and computers

D. Because of regular physical exercise

3. According to OECD what will happen in the next 25 years?
A. the working-age population will decrease by 5 million
B. the working-age population will rise by 12 million
C. the number of pensioners will increase by 70 million
D. the number of pensioners will decrease by 75 million
4. The word ‘centenarians’ in the passage is closet in meaning to

A. people who die very young

B. people who die because of infectious diseases
C. people who live in their 70s – 90s

(30)

5. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A. Helen Klein completed the first Eco-Challenge when she was 72.
B. Women are having fewer babies and more people are living longer.
C. There will be more and more centenarians.

D. Average life expectancy has decreased by 25 years.
READING PASSAGE 3

Read the passage and questions below. For each question, circle the letter next to the correct
answer (A, B, C, or D).

The World’s Fastest-Growing Economy

In less than three decades there have been enormous economic and social changes in China. Today
the state controls less than a quarter of industrial production and China has a free-market economy.
In recent years its economy has been growing faster than any other major country and is now the
second largest economy in the world.

More and more foreign companies have been investing in China, attracted by its market of 1.3
billion people and its very competitive low-cost labor force. In 2001 China received $47 billion in
foreign investment, four times the whole of Africa, and in 2002 more than half of China’s exports
were from foreign firms.

China’s major cities, too, have changed dramatically. Huge new office blocks, hotels, and shopping
malls have appeared where before there were traditional Chinese houses and markets. In Beijing
and other big cities, many areas of great cultural and historical interest have disappeared, but most
Chinese are in favor of modernization and very happy with their 21st-century cities of glass and
steel.

Since 2002, when there were only sixteen million cars in China, car sales have been rising rapidly
and the world’s top ten global car makers have set up joint ventures with Chinese car
manufacturers.

But, as in every industrialized country, rapid industrial development has brought many problems,
especially pollution. As industrialization continues and huge numbers of people enjoy western
standards of living for the first time, the worry is that the impact on the environment may also be
huge.

1. According to the passage, all of the following are true about China’s economy today, EXCEPT.
A. its economy has been growing fast.

On 7 October 2001 Debra and Andrew Veal left Tenerife to row across the Atlantic Ocean. One
hundred and thirteen days later, on 26 January 2002, after a journey of 4,768 kilometers, Debra
arrived in Barbados – alone. The Veals trained for the race for four years but after eight days at sea

Edgar and Blanca grow coffee and vegetables in Costa Rica. When they got married, 32 years ago,
they had no land. They worked long hours for other people and earned very little, but after sixteen
years they had enough money to buy some land. They decided to grow coffee. They borrowed the
money they needed and Edgar joined the local cooperative. But three years later, just when his crop
was ready, the price of coffee fell to its lowest point ever. For most coffee producers this was a
disaster, but Edgar was one of the very lucky ones because his cooperative sells most of its coffee to

cooperative producers from disaster.

Fairtrade has helped millions of people in the Third World. It has given them hope for the future.
For example producers have improved their lives and the quality of their crops. Communities have
used the social premium to make wells to get clean water, and to build schools and hospitals. The
story of Edgar and Blanca, who grow coffee and vegetables in Costa Rica, is typical. After many
years of hard work they have built a bigger house and their children have received an education.
‘All I have ever done is work, work, work,’ says Edgar. ‘I had no choice, but now many children
can choose what they want to do.’

The rate at which the deforestation of the world is proceeding is alarming. In 1950 approximately
25 percent of the Earth’s land surface had been covered with forests, less than twenty-five years
later the amount of forest land was reduced to 20 percent. This decrease from 25 percent to 20
percent from 1950 to 1973 represents as astounding 20 million square kilometers of forests.
Predictions are that an additional 20 million square kilometers of forest land will be lost by 2020.
The majority of deforestation is occurring in tropical forests in developing countries, fueled by the
developing countries’ need for increased agricultural land and the desire on the part of developed
countries to import wood and wood products. More than 90 percent of the plywood used in the
United States, for example, is imported from developing countries with tropical rain forests. By the
mid-1980s, solutions to this expanding problem were being sought, in the form of attempts to
establish an international regulatory organization to oversee the use of tropical forests.

Rainforests circle the globe for twenty degrees of latitude on both sides of the equator. In that

relatively narrow band of the planet, more than half of all the species of plants and animals in the
world make their home. Several hundred different varieties of trees may grow in a single acre, and
just one of those trees may be the habitat for more than ten thousand kinds of spiders, ants, and
other insects. More species of amphibians, birds, insects, mammals, and reptiles live in rainforests
than anywhere else on earth.

Unfortunately, half of the world’s rainforests have already been destroyed, and at the current rate,
another 25 per cent will be lost in four years’ time. Scientists estimate that as many as fifty million
acres are destroyed annually. In other words, every sixty seconds, one hundred acres of rainforest is
being cleared. By the time you finish reading this passage, two hundred acres will have been
destroyed! When this happens, constant rains erode the former forest floor, the thin layer of soil no
longer supports plant life, and the ecology of the region is altered forever. Thousands of species of
plants and animals are condemned to extinction and, since we aren’t able to predict the
ramifications of this loss to a delicate global ecology, we don’t know what we may be doing to the
future of the human species as well.

1. The author of this passage believes that
A. the rainforest will survive.

B. preserving the rainforest is important to the global ecology.
C. he can predict the future of global ecology.

D. the extinction of species is a natural process.

A month ago I had no idea that on a Saturday afternoon in November I'd be hanging 30 meters
above the ground and enjoying it. Now I looked down at the river far below me, and realized why
people love rock-climbing.

My friend Matt and I had arrived at the Activity Centre on Friday evening. The accommodation
wasn't wonderful, but we had everything we needed (beds, blankets, food), and we were pleased to
be out of the city and in the fresh air.

On Saturday morning we met the other ten members of our group. Cameron had come along with
two friends, Kevin and Simon, while sisters Carole and Lynn had come with Amanda. We had
come from various places and none of us knew the area.

We knew we were going to spend the weekend outdoors, but none of us was sure exactly how. Half
of us spent the morning caving while the others went rock-climbing and then we changed at
lunchtime. Matt and I went to the caves first. Climbing out was harder than going in, but after a
good deal of pushing, we were out at last—covered in mud but pleased and excited by what we'd
done.

We'd ever had. No, we weren't staying in an expensive hotel, but a youth hostel! I know what you're
thinking: we must've gone mad. But we haven't - I just wish we'd discovered youth hostels years
ago. Now that I'm back at university again luxury hotels are a thing of the past, and I was
complaining about this one day to a friend who said that she and her family never stayed anywhere
but hostels. I had no idea that hostels could be anything from a cottage to a castle. I mean where
else do you get to stay in a castle! In fact there are four different grades - simple, standard, superior
and special so you pay an overnight charge according to the kind of hostel you stay at.

You can't stay more than three nights at a time but that didn't bother us because we wanted a touring
holiday. Basically you look after yourself although most hostels do breakfast and some of them
offer an evening meal if you arrive early enough. There are a few rules like having to be in by 11
p.m. in the evening and out by 10 a.m. in the morning but otherwise you're free to do what you
want. Now I really believe that the best thing about this whole holiday was meeting so many

different and interesting people. I used to think hostels were only for the young and noisy, but not
any more. You can't imagine what a variety there was! Anyway, what are you all doing next year?

A. I cook for my family all the year round, and although I enjoy doing it, I really don't want to

myself dancing the night away!

B. I've worked hard for many years and now that I've got a bit of free time I plan on seeing as
many different places as possible. If I can save on the cost of accommodation, I'll have more
to spend on train or bus fares.

C. We want an opportunity to meet different sorts of people and get to know them, so we
thought we'd spend a couple of weeks relaxing in one place - our jobs mean moving about so
much that it would be nice not to carry a suitcase for a fortnight!

D. I'm a student and I don't have a lot of money to spare. I don't like getting cold and wet

though, so if the weather isn't good, I'll just make myself a pot of coffee and stay in all day
reading an exciting book.

Along with jogging and swimming, cycling is one of the best all-round forms of exercise. It can
help to increase your strength and energy, giving you more efficient muscles and a stronger heart.
But increasing your strength is not the only advantage of cycling. Because you're not carrying the
weight of your body on your feet, it's a good form of exercise for people with painful feet or backs.
However, with all forms of exercise it's important to start slowly and build up gently). Doing too
much too quickly can damage muscles that aren't used to working. If you have any doubts about
taking up cycling for health reasons, talk to your doctor and ask his/her advice.

Atlantic College

Last week I went to visit Atlantic College, an excellent private college in Wales. Unusually, it gives
young people much needed experience of life outside the classroom, as well as the opportunity to
study for their exams. The students, who are aged between 16 to 18 and come from all over the
world, spend the morning studying. In the afternoon they go out and do a really useful activity, such
as helping on the farm, looking after people with learning difficulties, or checking for pollution in
rivers.

One of the great things about Atlantic College students is that they come from many different social
backgrounds and countries. As few can afford the fees of $20,000 over two years, grants are
available. A quarter of the students are British, and many of those can only attend because they
receive government help.

‘I really admire the college for trying to encourage international understanding among young
people’, as Barbara Molenkamp, a student from the Netherlands, said. ‘You learn to live with
people and respect them, even the ones you don’t like. During the summer holidays my mother
couldn’t believe how much less I argued with my sister.’

To sum up, Atlantic College gives its students with excellent education, using methods which really
seem to work.

A month ago I had no idea that on a Saturday afternoon in November I'd be hanging 30 metres
above the ground and enjoying it. Now I looked down at the river far below me, and realised why
people love rock-climbing.

Climbing out was harder than going in, but after a
good deal of pushing, we were out at last—covered in mud but pleased and excited by what we'd
done.
