From as early as the 1920s millions of Americans were moviegoers. In the beginning, movies had
simple plots and were quickly over. Often, they lasted only fifteen minutes. The first Western, The
Great Train Robbery, had three small scenes - a train robbery, a pursuit on horseback, and a
surprise ending where the crook pointed his gun at the movie audience and fired.

was desirable because so many actors and actresses worked on Broadway, which is near New
Jersey. However, all filming had to take place outside where the light was strong enough. As a
result, Hollywood, nestled in the hills of sunny southern California, became the better choice for
year round filming.

By the 1920s, Hollywood films became a booming industry. Actors such as Charlie Chaplin were
making $10,000 per week instead of a few dollars per day on Broadway. Directors began producing
longer movies with more complicated plots. In time, Hollywood stood for films and the rich people
who starred in them.

A. Slow-moving, silent films.

B. Black and white movies.

C. Short movies with simple story lines.
D. Movies that were filmed outdoors.

27. According to paragraph 2, what was the main reason that Hollywood became a prime location
for making films?

A. Southern California has a year-round sunny climate.

D. The city goyernment promised a tax break if movie companies relocated.
28. According to paragraph 3, what did Hollywood come to symbolize?
A. The centre of Broadway entertainment.

B. The ultimate vacation spot for the rich.
C. A sunny location for movies.

D. The film industry and its glamorous movie stars.
29. Based on paragraph 3, we can conclude that

A. In the future, Hollywood will produce longer and more expensive movies.
B. Broadway will attract a large audience than Hollywood movies.

C. Hollywood movies are admired all over the world.

D. Hollywood's influence on American culture continues to the present day.
30. Which of the following statements from paragraph 2 states a fact?

READING

After inventing dynamite, Alfred Nobel became a very rich man. However, he foresaw its
universally destructive powers too late. Nobel preferred not to be remembered as the inventor
of dynamite, so in 1895, just two weeks before his death, he created a fund to be used for

awarding prizes to people who had made worthwhile contributions to mankind. Originally,
there were five awards: literature, physics, chemistry, medicine and peace. Economics was
added in 1968, just sixty seven years after the first award ceremony.

Nobel's original legacy of nine million dollars was invested, and the interest on this sum is
used for the awards which vary from $30,000 to $125,000.

Every year on December 10th, the anniversary of Nobel's death, the awards (gold medal,
illuminated diploma, and money) are presented to the winners. Sometimes politics plays an
important role in the judges' decisions. Americans have won numerous science awards, but
relatively few literature awards.

No awards were presented from 1940 to 1942 at the beginning of World War II. Some people
have won two prizes, but this is rare; others have shared their prizes.

16. When did the first award ceremony take place?
A. 1985 B.1901 C. 1962 D. 1968

17. Why was the Nobel prize established?

A. to recognize worthwhile contributions to humanity.

20. In how many fields are prizes bestowed?

Finish-born botanist William Nylander taught at the university of Helsinki for a number of years
and later moved to Paris, where he lived until his dealth at the end of the nineteenth century.
During the second half of the last century, he became a prominent figure in the field of
lichenology.

Botanists from all over the world sent samples to his laboratory to be analyzed and classified.

It can be said without exaggeration that four out of five lichens bear his name.

He was the first to realise the important of using chemical reagents in the taxonomy of lichens.
He selected the most common reagents used by the chemists of his time. Lichenologists all
over the world still used these reagents, including tincture of iodine and hypochlorite, in their
laboratories during the first half of the twentieth century, a Japanese named Arahina added
only one chemical product – P - Phenol diamines.

Nylander was also responsible for discovering that the atmosphere of big cities hindered the
lichens' development and caused them to disappear. Now they are used to detect atmospheric
pollution.

and spins them around. The water turbines are connected to generators which produce
electricity when they rotate. The water will eventually flow into special built dams. When a
