UNIT 8 – LESSON 1

I. OBJECTIVES
1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson, students can be able to:
Read and say the three Uu wordscorrectly
Recognize and say an extra Uu word correctly
Pronunciation: U,u /ju:/
Vocabulary: Up, umbrella, ugly, under
2. Skills: Develop Ss listening, reading, writing and speaking skill
3. Attitude: Help Ss to be more confident to communicate in English
II. TEACHING AIDS
1. Teacher’s: Lesson plan, books, projector, speakers and computer.
2. Students’: Books, notebooks, workbooks.
III. METHOD:
- Communicative approach.
Techniques:+ Work individually, in pairs/ groups.
+ Play game
IV. PROCEDURE
1. Organization: (1 min)
- Greetings: T – Ss greet each other.
- Checking attendance: Who’s absent today?

2.Warm up: (5 mins)


Play the song from Unit 2, ask students to sing along and do corresponding
actions.

Ask the students to take out their colour
pencils/ crayons.

Point to the pictures and elicit their name.

Ask the students to listen and circle the
pictures
Activity: Memory Game (7 mins)

Ask the students to memorise the order of
items in the first row of the activity.

Ask the students to close their books then
teacher covers 1 item in the first row.

Ask the students to guess the name of the
covered item.

Repeat the activity with other items or other
rows.



7. Listen, point and repeat. Colour the pictures
of the words that start with the u sound. Say the
u words (Track 52) (8 mins)

Show the students the under phonics card.
Point to it and say: // - under. Ask them to repeat.

Point under the desk and say: // - under .
Encourage the students to do the same

Say the letter. The students perform the
action and say the letter and the word (if they can).

Play the CD. The students listen, point to and
repeat the word.

Point to the picture and have students name
them.

Allow the students some time to colour in the
pictures of words start with the // sound.

Go around the classroom providing any
necessary help.
Activity: Run and Touch (10 mins)

Divide the class into two teams A and B.

Put up the phonics cards (cards from Part 6)
on the board.


Say one of the words. Two students , one
from each team, call out the word when they race to
touch the corresponding card.

The first students to touch the card wins a
point for his/ her team.

The team with more points wins.

7. Listen, point and repeat.
Colour the pictures of the
words that start with the u
sound. Say the u words

4. Consolidation: (2 min)
- Retell the content of lesson
5. Home-link: (1 min)
Review the sounds of the letter and words at home

1. Knowledge: : By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Review the sound of the letter Uu, three Uu words and recognize the

corresponding pictures. Write the letter Uu


2. Skills: Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking.
3. Attitude: Help Ss to be more confident to communicate in English
II. TEACHING AIDS:
1. Teacher’s: book, Phonics cards, computer
2. Students’: book, work book
III. METHOD:
Communicative approach.
Techniques: + Work individually, in pairs/ groups.
+ Play game
IV. PROCEDURE.

slowly to demonstrate its formation).

Point to it and elicit the sound //

Show the formation in the air (taking care

Repeat with the small letter u

The students trace the letters in their activity
books.

Go around and provide any necessary help.
Ask the students to say the sound of the letter.

Then draw lines from the letters to the
corresponding pictures.

Activity: Sound and word



Divide the class into two teams, A and B.

Put up the phonics cards (of Part 2) on the
board.

Ask a student from team A to identify the
sound (one point) and the word (one point).

Continue with a student from team B.

Write the points for each team on the board.

The team with more points wins

Tell the students to listen for words that begin
with the // sound.

Ask the students to stand when they hear the
words beginning with // sound and sit when they
hear words beginning with another sound.

Slowly say: ugly, up, ring, snake, umbrella,
under, tiger

Repeat the activity by saying the words
quickly and ask the students to circle the correct
pictures.

Go around the classroom and provide any
necessary help.

Draw and color (page 19 – Activity book)

Explain the activity
4. Draw and color

Read the words

Ask the students to use their pencils to draw
an umbrella and a tent in the provided spaces.
The student finishes first will raise his/ her hand and

shows his/ her pictures to the teacher.

Ask the students to color their pictures (use
any color they like)

Go around the classroom and provide any
necessary help.
Consolidation (2 mins)



Draw a letter U in the air and ask the students
to draw the same in the air

Mime the action and ask the students to guess
the words

Say the correct word loudly and tell the
students to do the corresponding actions.
