Soccer games often continue in spite of conditions that would stop other games. Soccer games are played
despite rain of snow. During the World War II, they were played even though there were attacks from the air.
The best professional players receive huge amount of money for the work that they do. For example, a soccer
player was recently offered a contract worth over twenty million dollars. However, the most important man at
the soccer game is the referee. The referee must be able to run fast, to speak many languages and to control
angry players. Besides, the referee often has to protect himself against angry fans, who sometimes throw stones
and bottles at him.


Every four years the teams of many nations meet for the World Cup, which is regarded as the most famous
competition in soccer and is considered the most spectator sporting event in the world. The tournament now
attracts entries from more than 150 countries and a worldwide television audience of over one-third of the
world’s population. International soccer games are very important events. Each team is expected to defense its


national honor. In some countries, players who make mistakes cannot go home after losing a game. Some who
returned became victims of violent attack by angry mobs.
