Unit 4. MATHEMETICS (CONT’T)

Comprehension3: Toward Interpretation

• a Why do schools teach mathematics?

• b. Why is algebra a sort of shorthand?

c

. What is the recent advance in mathematics

mentioned in the passage ?

• d. What can a computer do ?

They teach it because it plays such an important part

in our lives.

It is a short of shorthand because it can state many

mathematical ideas with just a few letters and signs.

For example, …..

It is the building of great electronic computers

.

Work in groups of four to discuss

these two questions

e. What branches of mathematics have you

studied?

………

………...

f. What branches of mathematics do you like

the most? Why ?

Ex: Among many ………., I like ………….

...………. because……….

School boys and girls study mathematics. Counting, adding,

subtracting multiplying, and dividing are part of what they learn.
Schools teach (1) ... because it plays (2) …… an
important part in our lives. How could we do such things (3)

…….figure time, make change, build houses, or even keep score for a
game without knowing about numbers? Simple(4) ………….
with numbers, or arithmetic, is one branch of mathematics. Among
the many(5)…………branches are geometry, algebra, trigonometry,
and calculus. Mathematics has grown (6)…….. the need for it has
grown. Geometry has to (7)…….. mostly with form - with
such things as angles, triangles, circles, and spheres. Algebra is a
sort of mathematical (8)……. ………. By using algebra we can state
many mathematical ideas with just (9)………. letters and signs. If
we want to say, for example, that in any circle the (10)…………. is
twice the radius we can write: d = 2r. Gradually other branches of
mathematics (11) ……….. added. Mathematics today is of great use
to (12)…………. other sciences. Mathematics, however, is much
more than a tool. It is a way of thinking - of drawing conclusions
(13)………….facts. One (14) …………advance in mathematics is the
building of great electronic computers, or calculating machines. In a
few seconds a computer can (15)…...problems that might take
a man years to solve alone.

Home work: Fill in the blanks with the words from the
list. Make any changes if necessary:

Mathematics is one of the most (1)……….. subjects in school. In

elementary schools, pupils learn(2)……….. adding, subtracting.

multiplying and dividing. These (3)……. calculations are called

arithmetic. Then in(4)……… school. they will learn other branches of
mathematics such as………. (5)algebra, trigonometry.

Mathematics (6)……. used in almost every field of activities (7)……..

lives. It has become(8)……… useful to many other sciences. However.
it is much more than a tool. It's a way of thinking drawing sound

conclusions from facts.

***. From the above passage, make questions with the words given and then
answer them:

1. What / pupils / elementary schools?
2. What / a way / thinking?

3. What/great use / many other sciences?
4. How/ important! mathematics?

5. What branches/ mathematics you like most?
