Nine-year-old Sansgita, from Gadhakhor, Basti District of Uttar Pradesh had not been introduced to
education due to her visual impairment. A resource teacher persuaded the headmaster of the village
primary school to get her admitted there. She was taught Braille and self help skills at school.
Gradually Sangita began participating in all the activities and is now a source of motivation to the
children in her village. Sangita’s ambition now is to become a doctor.


Mala, a class II student from Keekkalur, Thiruvannamalai District, T.N. was affected by brain fever.
Her right hand was incapacitated ever since. Mala’s parents considered withdrawing her from
school. A resource teacher gave her physiotherapy for about two weeks, and her teacher continued
the same. Mala can now write well.


Sangita and Mala are among the lucky few who study in schools. A majority of the disabled
children in the country are out of school. Of the 200 million children in the 6-14 years age group,


approximately 12 million are children with special needs.
