laughed, “Why do they say “Fresh fish is sold here”? This store must have sold
stale fish.” The storekeeper got to hear this, so he immediately erased the word
“Fresh”.

The following day, there was a customer coming to buy fish. He looked at
the signboard and said, “People can’t go to the florist’s to buy fish. Why does the
signboard say “here”? Thus the storekeeper erased the word “here”.

A few days later, another customer came and said, “Of course fish is for sale,
not on display.” “is sold” isn’t needed. Again, the storekeeper erased the word “is
sold”. Therefore, there was only one word on the signboard: “fish”. He thought
that from thenon there would be no one trying to find fault with it.

Later on, a neighbor dropped in. He had a look at the signboard and smiled.
“Now then, fishy odour spreads all over. Eveyone can smell it from a distance and
they know fish is sold nearby. It isn’t necessary to hang the signboard.” And in the
end, the storekeeper removed the signboard.
