Introduction
Americanslovetouseidioms,phrasesthatarecolorfulandmysterious.Whether
youareanativeEnglishspeakerorlearningthelanguage,youwillfindthis
bookusefulandentertaining.IfyouteachEnglish,thisbookwillbeavaluable


resource.
Itexplainsphrases(combinationsofwords)thataredifficultorimpossibleto
understandbasedontheusualmeaningofthewords.Knowingtheusual
meaningofgreaseandpalmdoesn'thelpusunderstandthatgreasing
someone'spalmcanmeantippinggenerouslyorbribing.
Someofthephrasesareconsideredidiomaticbecausetheyincludeawordthatis
notoftenused.Anexampleishunkerinhunkerdown.
Inaphrasalverb,averbgetsaspecialmeaningwhencombinedwithanother
word.Forexample,actcanmean"dosomething"or"performinaplayor
movie."Butactupmeans"behavebadly,"andactoutmeans"havean
emotionaloutburst."Therearethousandsofphrasalverbs.Theonesinthisbook
havemeaningsthatyouwouldnotexpectbasedontheusualmeaningofthe
wordswhenusedseparately.

WhyIWroteThisBook
YoucanfinddefinitionsofmanyidiomaticphrasesontheInternet.Such
definitionscanbehelpful.Butexamplesofthephrases,astheyareusedin
standardlanguage,oftengiveusabetterunderstandingoftheirmeaning.
ExplainingidiomsinmyEnglishclasseshasmadememoreawarethat
definitionsalonecanbemisleading.
Almostalltheentriesinthisbookareamongthemost-usedexpressionsin
AmericanEnglish.
Manyofthecitationsarefromnewsaccountsproducedbymajormedia
organizations,whichgenerallyuselanguageconsideredtobe"mainstream"or
"standard."Theexamplesarebrief—justlongenoughtohelpusunderstandthe
