There is very little documentation about the origins of water polo. It is known, however, that the
sport originated in the rivers and lakes of mid-19th century England as an aquatic version of
rugby. Early games used an inflated rubber ball that came from India known as a "pulu" (the
single Indian word for all "balls"). Pronounced "polo" by the English, both the game and the ball
became known as "water polo." To attract more spectators to swimming exhibitions, the London
Swimming Association designed a set of water polo rules for indoor swimming pools in 1870. At
first, players scored by planting the ball on the end of the pool with both hands. A favorite trick
of the players was to place the five-to-nine inch rubber ball inside their swimming suit and dive
under the murky water, they would then appear again as close to the goal as possible. The
introduction of the rules by Scottish players changed the nature of water polo. It became a
game that emphasized swimming, speed and passing. Scottish rules moved from a rugby
variant to a soccer style of play. Goals became a cage of 10x 3 feet and a goal could be scored

by being thrown. Players could only be tackled when they "held" the ball and the ball could no
longer be taken under water. The small rubber ball was replaced by a leather soccer ball. If the
player came up too near the goal, he was promptly jumped on by the goalie, who was permitted
to stand on the pool deck. Games were often nothing more than gang fights in the water as
players ignored the ball, preferring underwater wrestling matches that usually ended with one
man floating to the surface unconscious. Water polo was first played in the USA in 1888. The
game featured the old rugby style of play which resembled American football in the water.
"American style" water polo became very popular and by the late 1890s was played in such
venues as Madison Square Garden and Boston's Mechanics Hall, attracting 14,000 spectators
to national championship games.

A recent survey of crime statistics shows that we are all more likely to be burgled now than
20 years ago and the police advise everyone to take a few simple precautions to protect their
homes. The first fact is that burglars and other intruders (kẻ xâm nhập) prefer easy

opportunities, like a house which is very obviously empty. This is much less of a challenge than
an occupied house, and one which is well-protected. A burglar will wonder if it is worth the
bother.

There are some general tips on how to avoid your home becoming another crime statistic.
Avoid leaving signs that your house is empty. When you have to go out, leave at least one light
on as well as a radio or television, and do not leave any curtains wide open. The sight of your
latest music centre or computer is enough to tempt (xúi giục, hấp dẫn) any burglar.

Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place. The first place a burglar will look is

under the doormat (thảm lau chân) or in a flower pot and even somewhere more 'imaginative'
could soon be uncovered by the intruder. It is much safer to leave a key with a neighbour you
can trust. But if your house is in a quiet, desolate (hoang vắng) area be aware that this will be a
burglar's dream, so deter (ngăn chặn) any potential criminal from approaching your house by
fitting security lights to the outside of your house.

</div>
<span class='text_page_counter'>(17)</span><div class='page_container' data-page=17>

for many intruders. Downstairs windows provide easy access while upstairs windows can be
reached with a ladder or by climbing up the drainpipe. Before going to bed you should
double-check that all windows and shutters are locked. No matter how small your windows may be, it is
surprising what a narrow gap a determined burglar can manage to get through. For extra

security, fit window locks to the inside of the window.

What about entry via doors? Your back door and patio (sân trong) doors, which are easily
forced open, should have top quality security locks fitted. Even though this is expensive it will
be money well spent. Install a burglar alarm if you can afford it as another line of defense
against intruders.

A sobering (đúng mực) fact is that not all intruders have to break and enter into a property.
Why go to the trouble of breaking in if you can just knock and be invited in? Beware of bogus
(ma gà, kẻ giả danh) officials or workmen and, particularly if you are elderly, fit a chain and an
eye hole so you can scrutinise (quan sát kĩ) callers at your leisure. When you do have callers
never let anybody into your home unless you are absolutely sure they are genuine. Ask to see
an identity card, for example.

If you are in the frightening position of waking in the middle of the night and think you can
hear an intruder, then on no account should you approach the intruder. It is far better to
telephone the police and wait for help.

What I love about my job is the variety. I get enquiries (việc điều tra) from people all over
the world asking me how they should go about setting up their own website. I’ve been asked
about so many subjects - anything from someone wanting to teach people how to throw
boomerangs to another people selling paper flowers which they make at home in their spare
time.

Obviously with all the thousands of websites available at the click of a button, you want to
create an impression with your website so that it becomes a must-see destination. Not

everyone is prepared, however, for the way in which a website can become so popular that it
actually has to be closed down.

When people first set up their websites they probably pay their web advertiser a monthly
fee based on the number of hits (visitors) or page impressions their site receives. If they can
pay their monthly fee without it costing them too much, that is the best that most people hope
for. One guy, Pete Bennett, whom I helped, wanted to set up a one-stop shop to provide decent
images of the world’s flags. He’d been fascinated by flags since his boyhood and had no idea
that thousands of other people share his passion. Anyway, in one month his web page had over
1.5 million hits. As a result his internet provider trebled (gấp 3) the fee that he was being

If you have specialist skills or expertise, it can pay you to sell the products that people
want. I helped one woman design a page to advertise the fact that she tells fortunes, based on

the information that her clients supply her with. If you want her to tell your fortune, you fill in a
questionnaire online -- your age, date of birth, hobbies, interests and so on and for a small fee
she e-mails you back your fortune. You can print it out and it looks really good, decorated with
moons and stars, your zodiac (hoàng đạo) sign and your birthstone. I tried it myself and

although I’m not sure I believe it, my future according to her is positive and exciting. I also found
out that for someone born in August, like me, the birthstone is a peridot (đá/ngọc peridot), a
pale green stone which I’d never even heard of!

I also get a fair number of complaints from people e-mailing me to say that they can’t
access the website. When they click on the site a message appears on their screen saying ‘An
error has occurred in the script (bản chính) on this page’. This usually happens when someone
has tried to achieve fancy effects on their website by using programming techniques based on a
scripting language. This means that unless they really know what they are doing, whoever
designed the site has probably made a mistake in their programming. This is where people like
me come in. Most computer instruction guides make things appear quite straightforward, but
unless you’re very skilled, you’re likely to run into problems. It’s generally worth getting a
professional to help you set up your site in the first place -- otherwise people like me would be
out of work. And let’s face it, this is big business.

Animals share the earth with us. They fascinate us with their beauty, their grace, and their
speed. However, animals are endangered. Many of them have died, and without special care,
they may someday disappear from the Earth.

Is it important to care for animals? One reason is to protect the balance of life on Earth. Another
reason is the beauty of the animals themselves. Each species of animal is special. Once it is
gone, it is gone forever.

It is people who cause many of the problems that animals face. We alter and pollute their
habitats. We hunt them for skins, tusks, furs, and horns. We destroy animals that get in the way
of farming and building. We remove them from their natural habitats and take them home as
pets.

What can you do to help endangered animals? Learn as much as you can about them. The
more you know, the more you can help. Make an effort to support zoos and wildlife groups.
Many zoos breed endangered animals, helping to ensure that they will continue to live on. You
can also be a smart shopper and never buy a pet that has been raised in the

wilderness.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions

It has been thought that women are the second class in citizen, and men are the first. There
is not a real equality of opportunity for men and women. Years ago, people were living in a
man-dominated society. Women had to obey their husbands and fathers absolutely. Women's
place was in the kitchen and women's work was housework. In many places, women were not
even allowed to go to school. Women had no rights, even the right to choose husband for

themselves. Men usually occupied high positions in society so they thought they were more
intelligent than women. Men often considered women as their property. Sometimes, they were
mistreated by their husbands and suffered the problem as a fate. Many parents did not even
want to daughters.

Despite the progress, there remain outdated beliefs about women's roles, traditionally passed
down from generation to generation. Men are commonly seen as the strong bodies,
bread-winners in the family and key leaders in society, while women are restricted to being

housewives and childbearing and childrearing, as well as doing housework such as washing
and cooking.

According to social surveys, many women in the 21st century still have to work over 12 hours a

their husbands. In some regions, the labor of women is not recognized despite the hardships
they endure to support the whole family. Moreover, women are the direct victims of family
violence, especially in rural areas.

Thanks to the women's liberation movement, nowadays women have proved that they are
equal to men in every aspect. An average woman has weaker muscles than an average man
but she may be as intelligent as he is. Women can do everything that men can, and women can
do one thing that no man can: they produce children.

56.In a man- dominated society, _________.

A. women were the first class. B. women had no right.

C. women were respected by men. D. women got a good education.
57.Years ago, women’s place was _________.
