UNIT 1 FRIENDSHIP
A/ READING COMPREHENSION.
I/ Read the passage below. Then choose one best answer to each question.
In the United States, friendships can be close, constant, intense, generous, and real, yet fade away in a short time if
circumstances change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a
few latters for a while – then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years latter, they pick up the
friendship where it left off and are delighted.
In the States, you can feel free to visit people’s homes, share their holidays, or enjoy their lives without fear that you are
talking on a lasting obligation. Do not hesitate to accept hospitality because you can’t give it in return. No one will expect you
to do so for they know you are far from home. Americans will enjoy welcoming you and be pleased if you accept their
hospitality easily.
Once you arrive there, the welcome will be full, warm, and real. Most visitors find themselves readily invited into many
homes there. In some countries, it is considered inhospitality to entertain at home, offering what is felt as only home cooked
food, not “doing something for your guest.” It is felt that restaurant entertaining shows more respect and welcome. Or for
other different reasons, such as crowded space, language difficulties, or family custom, outsiders are not invited into homes.
In United States, both methods are used, but it is often considered more friendly to invite a person to one’s home than to
go to a public place, except in purely business relationships. So, if your host or hostess brings you home, do not feel that you
are being shown inferior treatment.
Don’t feel neglected if you don’t find flowers awaiting you in your hotel room, either. Flowers are very expensive there;
hotel deliver is uncertain; arrival times are delayed, changed, or cancelled – so flowers aren’t customarily sent as a
welcoming touch. Please don’t feel unwanted! Outward signs vary in different lands; the inward welcome is what matters,
and this will be real.

It is useless to have insincere friends because these friends remain with us as long as we are rich or powerful. It is better

A true friend will stand by us in our trials and tribulations. He will be a great source of consolation and comfort in our

IV/ Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.
I first met Mike when I was looking for someone to share the house I was renting. I put an advertisement in the local
student newspaper and he was one of the people who answered it. When we met, we hit it off straightaway and I told him he
could move in.
Living with Mike was fun. We soon found out that we had a lot in common and quickly became close friends. We always
had really good discussions about everything that was important to us at the time: politics, the environment, literature and
other less important things like cooking. We also liked the same music and that’s important when you’re sharing the house.
We fell out a couple of times about the housework. Mike thinks I’m untidy but I think life’s too short to worry about things
like that.
When they graduated three years ago, we went out separate ways and since then our lives have been very different. I went
back to my hometown and got a job as a production assistant for art exhibitions. Mike thinks I’m crazy because money is
very important to him now, but he doesn’t have time to spend with his family and his friends. I don’t see him very often.
When he comes down for the weekend we have a laugh, but our lifestyles are so different that we don’t have very much to
talk about.
