Christmas is almost here. Holiday music fills the air. colorful lights shine brightly in
windows. The stores are crowded with people buying lats-minute gifts. All these are Christmas
traditions. Another tradition is snow. Christmas in the northern part of the world comes a few days
after the start of winter. So, in many places, a blanket of clean white snow covers the ground on
christmas Day. This is what is meant by a "White Christmas".

Of course, many places do not get snow in December. In fact, they may be very warm at that
time of year. People who like snow-but live where it is warm-dream of having a white Christmat.
American songwriter Irving Berlin captured these feelings in his song "White Christmas". "White
Christmas" is one of the most popular songs of all times. Hundreds of singers and musicians have
recorded it. Perhaps the most famous version was sung by Bing Crosby. Songwriter Irving Berlin
was Jewish. He did not celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday. But in his Christmas song, he
shares a message of peace and happiness which all people can joy.

So from all of us - to all of you - we wish the happiest and most joyful holiday.

A DETERMINED MAN

Christopher Columbus, a famous explorer, was born in Genoa, Italy, about five hundred
years ago. Columbus was a sailor. In his day many people thought that the earth was flat.
Columbus, however, was convinced that the earth was round. He thought that India, which is in the
east, could be reached by sailing west. Columbus thought the earth much smaller than it really is.
He thought that the long voyage to India would be shorter if he would sail west instead of sailing

east.

Columbus first asked the king of Portugal for help. His request was refesed. Next Columbus
outlined his plans to the king of England. Again he was refused. Finally this determined man went
to Spain. For seven years he worked to enlist the help of the Spanish monarchs, King Ferdinand and
Queen Isablella. At last they consented to help him. They gave him men and ships. The efforts of

AN IMPORTANT FUEL

One of the most important discoveries of the nineteenth century was a method of using
naturat gas for cooking and heating. Large amounts of natural gas found in the United States,
usually several thousand feet below the surface of the earth. Natural gas is most found in places
where petroleum, the oil from which gasoline is made, is found. Often the natural gas must be
removed before the oil itself is reached.

For many years after natural gas first discocered, it was thought to have no value. Finally,
however, people began to understand its uses and to find ways of storing it and of moving it from
place to place.

Today natural gas is stored in large tanks and used for lighting, cooking, and heating. In
many ways natural gas is one of our finest fuels. It can be used for cooking without making the
room hot. It is cheap and can be moved easily from one place to another through long pipelines,
some of which are hundreds of miles in length.

The moon is the second brightes object in the sky after the sun. It is the only natural satellite
of the Earth and orbits around it. It has a diameter of about 3,476 kilometers and has many craters
on its surface. These were formed by meteor craters millions of years ago. It takes the moon 27.3
days to make one orbit around the earth and the same period time to complete one rotation on its
axis.

The moon is the only celestisl body that has been visited by human beings. One reason is

that the moon is much closer to the earth than the other planets; it is estimated that the moon is
about 240,000 miles from the earth. We can see it clearly from the earth with naked eyes. Because it
is close to us, the gravitational forces between the earth and the moon cause some interesting
effects. The most obvious is the tides. Under the graviational effect of the moon. This causes tides
when the level of the sea rises and falls.

Today, when English is one of the major languages in the world, it requires an effort of the
imagination to realize that this is a relatively recent thing-that in Shakespeare’s time, for example, only a few
million people spoke, and the language was not thought to be very important by the other nations of Europe,
and was unknown to the rest of the world.

English has become a world language because of its establishment as a mother tongue outside
England, in all the continents of the world. This exporting of English began in the seventeenth century, with
the first settlements in the United States, assisted by massive immigration in the nineteenth and twentieth
centuries, that has given the English language its present standing in the world.

Television is the most popular form of entertainment in the American household. People of all
ages use this medium to entertain themselves for an average of four hours a day. Thus, television
has had a tremendous influence on its viewers, especially children. Scientists now say that children

participate less in physical activities, spend less time reading and studying, and see a world of
violence that can affect their own feelings of security.

For many people the language of the Internet is English. "World, Wide, web: Three English
Words " was the name of an article by Michael Specter in the New York Time a few yesrs ago. The
article went on to say: "If you want to take full advantage of the Internet, there is only one real way

to do it: leam English."

In general, it is not difficult to learn to use Internet services. But although Internet services
are rather easy to use, you will have considerable difficulties if you are not familiar with English. In
fact, knowledge of English is one of the most important aspects that help you use the Internet.
Learning to use a new Internet service may take a few huors, a few days, or some weeks, but it
takes years to learn a language so that you can use it fluently and confidently. Of course, when you
know some English, you can learn more just by using it on the Internet. But at least your English
should be good enough to understand commonly used words and to know what to do on the
Internet.

Are you looking for a cheap, clean, effective source of power that doesn’t cause pollution or
waste natural resources? Look no further than solar energy from our sun. At present, most of our
electricity comes from the use of coal and gas, oil or nuclear power. This power could be provided
by the sun. One percent of the solar energy that reaches the Earth is enough to provide power for the
total population. Many countries are already using solar energy. Solar panels are placed on the roof
of a house and the Sun’s energy is used to heat water. The energy can be stored for a number of
days, so on cloudy days you can use solar energy and cars will use solar power instead of gas by the
year 2015.

VI/ Read the following passage and choose the best answers. (2)

The zipper is a wonderful invention. They are very common so we forget that they are
wonderful. They are strong, but they open and close very easily. They come in many colors and
sizes. In 1810s, people in the US wore high shoes or clothes with long row of buttons. It was hard
for them to wear anything. They wanted an easier way to put on and take off clothes. White comb
Judson invented the first zipper in 1839. He called it a slide fastener.

A zipper has three parts. There are dozens of metal or plastic teeth in two rows. These are
fastened to two flexible strips of cloth. A fastener slides along and fastens the teeth together.
When it slides the other way, it takes the teeth apart.
