Football became increasingly popular among female athletes in the late 20th century. Accordingly, a World
Cup for women was established, with the first tournament taking place in 1991 in China. The United States, led

Cars became popular as a quick and comfortable way of getting around. This is still
true when you drive along an quiet country
road or a modern motorway. As far as get from one place
to another in the city is concerned, it is a different story. Whenever
I want to get up anywhere in a hurry, I leave the car at home
and go on foot. It often turns out to be more quicker. I still make
the mistake now and again of thinking the car is an efficient means
off transport. The other day my wife was feeling a bit under the
weather. She had been having terribly headaches for some
time and she decided she couldn't take it anymore and asking
me to give her a lift to the doctor, whose surgery is in the centre
of town. We live on a suburb in the old quarter of the city and
it is about twenty minutes away on foot. On the way back, however,
it is all uphill and I must admit its can be exhausting, especially on a
hot day. Reluctantly I got the car out of the garage and we set it off,
me muttering about the wonders of taxis. My heart sunk as we
hit the first traffic jam – I knew we were beginning a long journey.

According to legend, Warsaw received its name from two children, Wars and Sawa. Syrenka, a mermaid from
the Wisra, predicted the founding of Warsaw to the pair, who then gave their names to the city. Warsaw was
founded around the turn of the 14th century by Duke Bolesraw of Mazovia, then an independent principality. In
1413 Warsaw became the regional capital. At that time its population was about 4,500. The city lay on major
trade routes, benefiting from its location on the Wisra. In 1526, when the last Mazovian prince died without an

the move to Warsaw, which remained the capital for the next 200 years.
