800 SONET Access System
SONET M13 Multiplexer Applications
The LoopStar 800 SONET Access System enables service providers to cost effectively deploy a
fiber-based solution to address locations where copper-based M13 multiplexers are typically
deployed. While providing an effective alternative to copper-based M13s, the LoopStar 800 can
deliver other advanced services simultaneously from the same system. As a result, the LoopStar
800 provides increased network visibility through its SONET management features and supports
other services without significantly increasing the per port cost over traditional M13 multiplexers.
Overview
ADC’s LoopStar 800 is designed to offer high-density DS1 services to one or more service
provider customers. The LoopStar 800 efficiently multiplexes and transports DS1 services over
SONET while providing the reliability and protection expected from traditional SONET networks.
In terminal multiplexer applications, the LoopStar 800 can drop the full bandwidth of an OC-3
(84 DS1s) from a single shelf to a customer site. In ring applications, three LoopStar 800s can be
used to provide one DS3’s bandwidth capacity to each customer location. The LS800’s service
scalability and rack or wall-mountable options make it ideal for individual and/or multi-tenant
business units.
Operational Efficiency
The LoopStar 800’s compact 2 RU design (3.5”x17”x12”) allows service providers to increase
their bandwidth capacity per RU by 50 percent over traditional M13 multiplexers**. Using a 28-
port DS1 card in three tributary interface slots allows a service provider to choose from multiple
OC-3 or OC-12 network interface options (UPSR or 1+1 APS) while still dropping off up to 84
DS1s, all from a single LoopStar 800 system.
With this configuration, a fourth tributary slot remains available. This slot can be used for a
fourth DS1 card to provide complete electrical protection for DS1 traffic, or if the LoopStar 800 is
equipped with OC-12 network interface cards, it can be used to provide 10/100/1000BT
Ethernet or OC-3 access for additional revenue-generating opportunities. This capability goes
beyond traditional M13 multiplexers to increase capacity while providing more service flexibility.
With support for advanced Ethernet-over-SONET (EoS) features, the LoopStar 800 is fully capable
of maximizing the bandwidth efficiency of an OC-3 or an OC-12 in mixed traffic (TDM+Ethernet)

applications.

Connectivity and Cable Management
The system also supports a wall mount option for special demark applications in customer locations. As
part of the LoopStar 800’s unique architectural design in supporting multiple tributary interface options,
different electrical interface board options are provided for physically interfacing DS1 and DS3 electrical
signals. The interface board options include an 84 DS1 port panel, a 24 DS3 port panel, a 28 DS1 and
12 DS3 port combo panel, and a blank panel for all-Ethernet applications. DS1 cable interfacing is
managed using standard 64-pin AMP connectors, and DS3 cable interfacing is managed using standard
BNC connectors.
Summary
The LoopStar 800 system design combines the functions of multiple devices into a single common
platform. When used to drop DS1 services to end-user customers, the LoopStar 800 includes the
features of a SONET terminal, a digital cross-connect system, a DS1 performance monitoring and test
system, and a M13 Multiplexer all in one. This combination of functions provides significant capital and
operations cost savings for a service provider’s network.
