<i><b>Read the following passage and blacken the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to </b></i>
<i><b>indicate the correct answer for each of the questions.</b></i>

Until recently, most American entrepreneurs were men. Discrimination against women
in business, the demands of caring for families, and lack of business training had kept the
number of women entrepreneurs small. Now, however, businesses owned by women account
for more than $40 billion in annual revenues, and this figure is likely to continue rising

throughout the 1990s. As Carolyn Doppelt Gray, an official of the Small Business
Administration, has noted, "The 1970s was the decade of women entering management, and
the 1980s turned out to be the decade of the woman entrepreneur". What are some of the
factors behind this trend? For one thing, as more women earn advanced degrees in business
and enter the corporate world, they are finding obstacles. Women are still <b>excluded</b> from
most executive suites. Charlotte Taylor, a management consultant, had noted, "In the 1970s
women believed if they got an MBA and worked hard they could become chairman of the
board. Now they've found out <b>that</b> isn't going to happen, so they go out on their own".

In the past, most women entrepreneurs worked in "women's" fields: cosmetics and
clothing, for example. But this is changing. Consider ASK Computer Systems, a
$22-million-a-year computer software business. It was founded in 1973 by Sandra Kurtzig, who was then
a housewife with degrees in math and engineering. When Kurtzig founded the business, her
first product was software that let weekly newspapers <b>keep tabs on</b> their newspaper
carriers-and her office was a bedroom at home, with <b>a shoebox under the bed</b> to hold the company's
cash. After she succeeded with the newspaper software system, she hired several bright
computer-science graduates to develop additional programs. When these were marketed and
sold, ASK began to grow. It now has 200 employees, and Sandra Kurtzig owns $66.9 million
of stock.

Of course, many women who start their own businesses fail, just as men often do.
They still face <b>hurdles</b> in the business world, especially problems in raising money; the
banking and finance world is still dominated by men, and old attitudes die hard. Most
businesses owned by women are still quite small. But the situation is changing; there are
likely to be many more Sandra Kurtzigs in the years ahead.

<i><b> indicate the correct answer for each of the questions.</b></i>

Carbohydrates, which are sugars, are an essential part of a healthy diet. They provide the
main source of energy for the body, and they also <b>function</b> to flavor and sweeten foods.
Carbohydrates <b>range</b> from simple sugars like glucose to complex sugars such as amylose and
amylopectin. Nutritionists estimate that carbohydrates should make up about one-fourth to
one-fifth of a person's diet. This translates to about 75-100 grams of carbohydrates per day.
A diet that is <b>deficient</b> in carbohydrates can have an adverse effect on a person's health.
When the body lacks a sufficient amount of carbohydrates it must then use its protein supplies
for energy, a process called gluconeogenesis. <b>This</b>, however, results in a lack of necessary

<b>This</b>, however, results in a lack of necessary
protein, and further health difficulties may occur. A lack of carbohydrates can also lead to
ketosis, a build-up of ketones in the body that causes fatigue, lethargy, and bad breath.

<i><b>the correct answer to each of the following questions. </b></i>

Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, in the small Tuscan town of Vinci, near
Florence. He was the son of a wealthy Florentine public official and a peasant woman. In the
mid-1460s, the family settled in Florence, where Leonardo was given the best education that Florence
could offer. He rapidly advanced socially and intellectually. He was handsome, persuasive in
conversation, and a fine musician and improviser. About in 1466 he <b>apprenticed</b> as a studio boy to
Andrea Del Verrocchio. In Verrocchio’s workshop, Leonardo was introduced to many activities, from
the painting of altarpieces and panel pictures to the creation of large sculptural projects. In 1472, he
was entered in the painter’s guild of Florence, and in 1476, he was still mentioned as Verrocchio’s
assistant. In Verrocchio’s <i>Baptism of Christ,</i> the kneeling angel at the left of the painting is by
Leonardo.

In 1478, Leonardo became an independent master. His first commission, to paint an
altarpiece for the chapel of the Palazzo Vecchino, the Florentine town hall, was never executed. His
first large painting, The <i>Adoration of the Magi</i>, left unfinished, was ordered in 1481 for the Monastery
of San Donato a Scopeto, Florence. Other works ascribed to his youth are the so-called Benois
Madonna, the portrait <i>Ginerva de’ Benci</i>, and the unfinished <i>Saint Jerome</i>.

in the duke’s numerous military enterprises and was so active also as an architect. In addition, he
assisted the Italian mathematician Luca Pacioli in the celebrated work <i>Divina Proportione</i>.

Evidence indicates that Leonardo had apprentices and pupils in Milan, for whom he probably
wrote the various texts later compiled as <i>Treatise on Painting</i>. The most important of his own
paintings during the early Milan period was <i>The Virgin of the Rocks</i>, two versions of which exist; <i>he</i>
<i>worked on the compositions for a long time, as was his custom, seemingly unwilling to finish what he</i>
<i>had begun.</i>

From 1495 to 1496, Leonardo labored on his masterpiece, <i>The Last Super</i>, a mural in the
refectory of the Monastery of Santa Maria Delle Grazie, Milan. Unfortunately, his experimental use of
oil on dry plaster was technically unsound, and by 1500 its deterioration had begun. Since 1726
attempts have been made, unsuccessfully, to restore it; a <b>concerted</b> restoration and conservation
program, making use of the latest technology, was begun in 1977 and is reversing some of the
damage. Although much of the original surface is gone, the majesty of the composition and the
penetrating characterization of the figures give a fleeting vision of its vanished splendor.

During his long stay in Milan, Leonardo also produced other paintings and drawings, most of
which have been lost, theater designs, architectural drawings, and models for the dome of Milan
Cathedral. His largest commission was for a colossal bronze monument to Francesco Sforza, father
of Ludovico, in the courtyard of Castello Sforzesco. In December 1499, however, the Sforza family
was driven from Milan by French forces; Leonardo left the statue unfinished and he returned to
Florence in 1500.

<i><b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate</b></i>

<i><b>the correct answer to each of the following questions. </b></i>

It is said that George Washington was one of the first to realize how important the building of
canals would be to the nation’s development. In fact, before he became the President, he headed
the first company in the United States to build a canal, which was to connect the Ohio and Potomac
rivers. It was never completed, but it showed the nation the <b>feasibility</b> of canals. As the country
expanded westward, settlers in western New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio needed a means to ship
goods. Canals linking natural waterways seemed to supply an effective method.

In 1791, engineers commissioned by the state of New York investigated the possibility of a
canal between Albany on the Hudson River and Buffalo on Lake Eric to link the Great Lakes area
with the Atlantic seacoast. It would avoid the mountains that served as a barrier to canals from the
Delaware and Potomac rivers.

The first attempt to dig the canal, to be called the Eric Canal, was made by private
companies but only a comparatively small portion was built before the project was halted for lack of
funds. The cost of the prospect was an estimated $5 million, an enormous amount for those days.
There was some <b>on-again-off-again</b> federal funding, but this time the War of 1812 put an end to
construction. In 1817, DeWitt Clinton was elected Governor of New York and persuaded the state to
finance and build the canal. It was completed in 1825, costing $2 million more than expected.

The canal rapidly lived up to its sponsors’ faith, quickly paying for itself through <b>tolls</b>. It was
far more economical than any other form of transportation at the time. It permitted trade between the
Great Lake region and the East coast, robbing the Mississippi River of much of its traffic. It allowed
New York to supplant Boston, Philadelphia, and other eastern cities as the chief center of both
domestic and foreign commerce. Cities sprang up along the canal. It also contributed in a number of
ways to the North’s victory over the South in the Civil War.

An expansion of the canal was planned in 1849. Increased traffic would undoubtedly have
<b>warranted</b> its construction had it not been for the railroads.

<b>Question 71: </b>Why does the author most likely mention George Washington in the first paragraph?
<b>A. </b>He was President at the time the Eric Canal was built.

<b>B. </b>He commissioned engineers to study the possibility of building the Eric Canal.
<b>C. </b>He successfully opened the first canal in the United States.

<b>D. </b>He was involved in pioneering efforts to build canals.

<i><b>VI.</b></i><b> </b><i><b>Read the following passage, and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to</b></i>

<i><b>indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 46 to 56 .</b></i>

A rather surprising geographical feature of Antarctica is that a huge freshwater lake ,one
of the world’s largest and deepest , lies <b>hidden</b> there under four kilometers of ice .Now known as
Lake Vostok, this huge body of water is located under the ice block that comprises Antarctica . The
lake is able to exist in its unfrozen state beneath this blockof ice because its waters are warmed by
geothermal heat from the earth’s core .The thick glacier above Lake Vostok actually insulates it from
the <b>frigid </b>temperatures on the surface .

The lake was first discovered in the 1970s while a research teamwas conducting an aerial
survey of the area .Radio waves from the survey equipment penetrated the ice and revealed a body of
water of indeterminate size.It was not until much more recently that data collected by satellite made
scientists aware of the tremendous size of the lake ; the satellite –borne radar detected an extremely
flat region where the ice remains level because it is floating on the water of the lake .

The discovery of such a huge freshwater lake trapped under Antarctica is of interest to the
scientific community because of the potential that the lake contains ancient <b>microbes </b>that have
survived for thousands upon thousands of years, unaffected by factors such as nuclear fallout and
elevated ultraviolet light that have affected organism in more exposed areas .The <b>downside</b> of the
discovery, however, lies in the difficulty of conducting research on the lake in such a harsh climate
and in the problems associated with obtaining uncontaminated samples from the lake without actually
exposing the lake to contamination . Scientists are looking for possible way to accomplish this.

<b>Text 2. </b>

In the very distant geological past all animals were aquatic. The very first vertebrates, or animals
with backbones, of which we have any fossil record, lived in the water. These vertebrates, the fish,
were adapted to underwater living. Their streamlined bodies were covered with scales to reduce
surface friction: they had muscular tails so that they could swim swiftly in such a dense medium as
water; and they were endowed with gills for breathing underwater.

<b>Descendants</b> of fish-type ancestors crossed the seashore barrier and accommodated themselves to life
on land. As amphibians, they possessed limbs instead of fins and lungs instead of gills. But they
never became completely free of the bonds that tied them to the water; even today many amphibians
return to the water to lay their eggs.

Millions of years after the first clumsy amphibians crawled over the land, newer types of land
dwellers appeared; these animals gave rise to the present-day reptiles and mammals. <b>They</b> were more
completely converted for land dwelling, with bodies and biological activities far different from those
of fish. With these special adaptations, mammals have been able to colonize the woods and meadows,
the deserts and high mountains, often far removed from the sea.

<b>Question 51-60: Read the passage and choose the best answer to each of the questions below.</b>

Biological diversity has become widely recognized as a <b>critical</b> conservation issue only in the past
two decades. The rapid destruction of the tropical rain forests, which are the ecosystems with the
highest known species diversity on Earth, has awakened people to the importance and fragility of
biological diversity. The high rate of species extinctions in these environments is <b>jolting</b>, but it is
important to recognize the significance of biological diversity in all ecosystems. As the human
population continues to expand, it will negatively affect one after another of Earth’s ecosystems. In
terrestrial ecosystems and in fringe marine ecosystems (such as wetlands), the most common problem
is habitat destruction. In most situations, the result is irreversible. Now humans are beginning to
destroy marine ecosystems through other types of activities, such as disposal and runoff of poisonous
waste; in less than two centuries, by significantly reducing the variety of species on Earth, they have
irrevocably redirected the course of evolution.

Certainly, there have been periods in Earth’s history when mass extinctions have occurred. The
extinction of the dinosaurs was caused by some physical event, either climatic or cosmic. There have
also been less dramatic extinctions, as when natural competition between species reached an extreme
conclusion. Only 0.01 percent of the species that have lived on Earth have survived to the present,
and it was largely chance that determined which species survived and which died out.

However, nothing has ever equaled the <b>magnitude</b> and speed with which the human species is
altering the physical and chemical world and demolishing the environment. In fact, there is wide
agreement that it is the rate of change humans are inflicting, even more than the changes themselves,
that will lead to biological devastation. Life on Earth has continually been <b>in flux</b> as slow physical
and chemical changes have occurred on Earth, but life needs time to adapt-time for migration and
genetic adaptation within existing species and time for the proliferation of new genetic material and
new species that may be able to survive in new environments.

<b>Question 51:</b> What does the passage mainly discuss?

<b>Question 61-70: Read the following passage and choose the best option to complete the blank</b>
<b>or answer the question.</b>

Jupiter is the largest and most massive planet and is fifth in order of distance from the sun. It is well
placed for observation for several months in every year and on average is the brightest of the planets
apart from Venus, though for relatively brief periods Mars may outshine <b>it</b>. Jupiter’s less than 10 hour
rotation period gives it the shortest day in the solar system in so far as the principal planets are
concerned. There are no true seasons on Jupiter because the axial inclination to the perpendicular of
the orbital plane is only just over 3°-less than that for any other planet.

The most famous mark on Jupiter is the Great Red Spot. It has shown variations in both <b>intensity</b>

and color, and at times it has been invisible, but it always returns after a few years. At its greatest
extent it may be 40,000 kilometers long and 14,000 kilometers wide, so its surface area is greater than
that of Earth. Though the latitude of the Red Spot varies little, it drifts about in longitude. Over the

past century the total longitudinal drift has amounted to approximately 1200°. The latitude is
generally very close to -22°. It was once thought that the Red Spot might be a solid or semisolid body
floating in Jupiter’s outer gas. However, the Pioneer and Voyager results have refuted that idea and
proven the Red Spot to be a phenomenon of Jovian meteorology. Its longevity may well due to its
exceptional size, but there are signs that it is decreasing in size, and it may not be permanent. Several
smaller red spots have been seen occasionally but have not lasted.

<b>Question 61:</b> The main purpose of the passage is

<b>A. </b>to show which of the planets shines the brightest

<b>B. </b>to prove that Jupiter is shrinking

<b>C. </b>to explain why the Great Red Spot changes

Although dinosaurs roamed virtually the whole earth for 160 million years, dinosaur skeletons
are relatively scarce. Many dinosaurs are known only from a single tooth or bone chip. The reason is
that it takes very special conditions to make a fossil and a lot of luck to find one.

For many years, information about Tyrannosaurus rex was sketchy at best. However, in the

summer of 1990, the first nearly complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton ever found was excavated in
the Montana badlands. That same year a second, even more complete, skeleton was found in South
Dakota. Together these skeletons yielded surprising new insights into the most famous of the
dinosaurs, about the anatomy and behavior of T. rex and the world in which it lived.

Among the surprising discoveries were that T. rex was a far sleeker, but more powerful,
carnivore than previously thought, perhaps weighing less than 6 1/2 tons, no more than a bull
elephant, and that T. rex's habitat was forest, not swamp or plain as previously believed. Moreover,
there appears to have been two forms of T. rex, the male quite different from the female. Scientists
hope that future fossil discoveries and increasingly more sophisticated techniques will provide more
accurate and complete information about not only T. rex but all the dinosaurs, giving us a window on
the world so many millions of years into the past.

<b>52.</b>It can be inferred from the passage that much of what scientists know about T. rex
A. has been known for many years

B. has not come from fossil discoveries

C. has been derived from the most sophisticated techniques
D. has been recently discovered

<b>53.</b>The passage implies that fossils
A. are usually found in the Midwest

B. are usually found in beds containing complete skeletons

C. are few in comparison to the number of dinosaurs that roamed the earth
D. are easy to discover but difficult to excavate

<b>54.</b>Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A. Interest in fossils is relatively recent.

B. It takes advanced techniques to find fossils.

C. The search for fossils has been going on for many years.
D. Dinosaurs were confined to a relatively small area.

<b>55.</b>Which of the following can be inferred about T. rex?
A. It was a small but powerful dinosaur.

B. It was a strong, meat-eating dinosaur.
C. It was a fast, plains-dwelling dinosaur.
D. It was a gigantic, forest-dwelling dinosaur.

<b>56.</b>The passage implies which of the following?

A. Not all the conclusions scientists make are accurate.

B. We have all the information we need about life millions of years ago.
C. New discoveries are confirming old theories.

D. A whole skeleton is required for information about a dinosaur.
B.

A major revolution for the automated office is electronic mail. The customary postal system
requires messages written on paper to be transmitted physically from one location to another. With
electronic mail, messages are convened into electronic signals, transmitted anywhere in the world,
and then

changed back into the original written form, all in several seconds or minutes at most.

</div>
<span class='text_page_counter'>(46)</span><div class='page_container' data-page=46>

Electronic mail is far more expensive than the postal system, as it must compete for
transmission space on satellite, telephone, and cable links. But planned increases in satellite
communications should lower the price and assist in the spread of electronic mail.

<b>57.</b>It can be inferred from the passage that the advantages of electronic mail are
A. its low cost and efficiency

B. its use of the postal system and telephone "mailboxes"
C. its role in satellite communications and teleconferencing
D. its speed and utility

<b>58.</b>The passage implies that electronic mail
A. will be used more often in the future
B. will soon outlive its usefulness
C. is too costly for most offices

D. could never take the place of the current postal system

<b>59.</b>Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. Electronic mail saves money but not time.

B. Electronic mail has more than one use in the office setting.
C. Electronic mail will eventually replace the telephone.
D. Electronic mail is not a new phenomenon.

C.

The oldest living things on Earth are trees. Some of California sequoias have for four
thousand years looked down on the changes in the landscape and the comings and goings of humans

They sprouted from tiny seeds about the time the Egyptian pyramids were being built. Today these

<b>giant patriarchs</b> seem as remote and inaccessible as the rocks and mountain cliffs on which they
grow, like cathedral columns holding up the sky. It is hard to imagine them playing any part in the
lives of mere humans or being in any way affected by the creatures that pass at their feet.

Lesser trees, however, have played an intimate role in the lives of people since <b>they</b> first
appeared on Earth. Trees fed the fires that warmed humans: they provided shelter, food and medicine
and even clothing. They also shaped people's spiritual horizons Trees expressed the grandeur and
mystery of life, as they moved through the cycle of seasons, from life to death and back to life again.
Trees were the largest living things around humans and they knew that some trees had been standing
on the same spot in their parent's and grandparents' time, and would continue to stand long after they
were gone. No wonder these trees became symbols of strength, fruitfulness, and everlasting life.

<b>52.</b>It can be inferred from the passage that much of what scientists know about T. rex

<b>55.</b>Which of the following can be inferred about T. rex?
A. It was a small but powerful dinosaur.

B. It was a strong, meat-eating dinosaur.
C. It was a fast, plains-dwelling dinosaur.

Through the use of video screens in company offices, a single document can be transmitted to
hundreds of people in dozens of branch offices at the same time. Thus, electronic mail, along with
databases, can be an important asset in teleconferences. Furthermore, the use of electronic mail in the
form of a "mailbox" attached to a telephone is also of great value. Since in offices many telephone
calls go .uncompleted on the first attempt, with electronic mail, two-way conversion is not essential,
so it reduces telephone use and saves time.

Electronic mail is far more expensive than the postal system, as it must compete for
transmission space on satellite, telephone, and cable links. But planned increases in satellite
communications should lower the price and assist in the spread of electronic mail.

<b>57.</b>It can be inferred from the passage that the advantages of electronic mail are
A. its low cost and efficiency

B. its use of the postal system and telephone "mailboxes"
C. its role in satellite communications and teleconferencing
D. its speed and utility

<b>58.</b>The passage implies that electronic mail
A. will be used more often in the future
B. will soon outlive its usefulness
C. is too costly for most offices

D. could never take the place of the current postal system

<b>59.</b>Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. Electronic mail saves money but not time.

B. Electronic mail has more than one use in the office setting.
C. Electronic mail will eventually replace the telephone.
D. Electronic mail is not a new phenomenon.
