<b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate</b>
<b>the correct answer to each of the questions from (51- 60).</b>

If parents bring up a child with the sole aim of turning the child into a genius, they will cause a
disaster. According to several leading educational psychologists, this is one of the biggest mistakes
which ambitious parents make. Generally, the child will be only too aware of what his parents
expect, and will fail. Unrealistic parental expectations can cause great damage to children.

However, if parents are not too unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but are
ambitious in a sensible way, the child may succeed in doing very well – especially if the parents
are very supportive of their child.

Michael Collins is very lucky. He is <b>crazy about </b>music, and his parents help him a lot by
taking him to concerts and arranging private piano and violin lessons for him. <b>They</b> even drive him
50 kilometers twice a week for violin lessons. Michael’s mother knows very little about music, but
his father plays the trumpet in a large orchestra. However, he never makes Michael enter music
competitions if he is <b>unwilling</b>.

Winston Smith, Michael’s friend, however, is not so lucky. Both his parents are successful
musicians, and they set too high a standard for Winston. They want their son to be as successful as
they are and so they enter him for every piano competition held. They are very unhappy when he
doesn’t win. Winston is always afraid that he will disappoint his parents and now he always seems
quiet and unhappy.

<b>Read the passage and choose the correct answer. (71 </b>–<b> 80)</b>

Wood has long been a popular building material in North America because it has generally
been plentiful and cheap. Swedish settlers in Delaware built log cabins as early as 1630s. In New
England, British colonists built wooden ‘saltbox houses’. Most of the wooden homes of Colonial
times could be built with simple tools and minimal skills.

In the early 19th century, the standard wooden house was built with beams set into heavy posts
and held together with wooden pegs. This method of construction was time – consuming and
required highly skilled workers with special tools. The balloon – frame house, invented in 1833 in
Chicago by a carpenter from Hartford. Connecticut, used a frame of lightweight lumber, mostly 2
´4 and 2´6 inches. This type of house could be assembled by any careful worker who could saw in
a straight line and drive a nail.

This revolution in building was made possible by improved sawmills that could quickly cut
boards to standard sizes and the lower cost of lumber that resulted. There were also new
machines that could produce huge quantities of inexpensive nails. Skeptics predicted that a
strong wind could send such houses flying through the air like balloons and, at first ‘balloon
frame’ was a term of <b>derision</b>. But the light frames proved practical, and wooden houses have
been basically built this way ever since.

<b>Question71</b>: What is the main purpose of the passage?

B. To stress the importance of wood as a building material.

<i><b>5</b></i> cult make use of the principle of use and disuse to "build" their bodies, almost like a piece of
sculpture, into whatever unnatural shape is demanded by fashion in this peculiar minority culture.
Muscles are not the only parts of the body that respond to use in this kind of way. Walk barefoot and
you acquire harder skin on your soles. It is easy to tell a farmer from a bank teller by looking at
their hands alone. The farmer's hands are horny, hardened

<i><b>10</b></i> by long exposure to rough work. The teller's hands are relatively soft.

The principle of use and disuse enables animals to become better at the job of surviving in their
world, progressively better during their lifetime as a result of living in that world. Humans, through
direct exposure to sunlight, or lack of it, develop a skin color which equips them better to survive in
the particular local conditions.

<i><b>15</b></i> Too much sunlight is dangerous. Enthusiastic sunbathers with very fair skins are susceptible to skin

cancer. Too little sunlight, on the other hand, leads to vitamin-D deficiency and rickets. The brown
pigment melanin which is synthesized under the influence of sunlight, makes a screen to protect the
underlying tissues from the harmful effects of further sunlight. If a suntanned person moves to a
less sunny climate, the melanin disappears, and the body is able to benefit from what little sun there
is. This can be represented as an instance of the principle of use

<i><b>20</b></i> and disuse: skin goes brown when it is "used", and fades to white when it is not.
<b>41.</b> What does the passage mainly discuss?

A. How the principles of use and disuse change people's concepts of themselves.

<i><b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct </b></i>
<i><b>answer to each of the questions from 51 to 60.</b></i>

The languages spoken by early Europeans are still shrouded in mystery. There is no linguistic
continuity between the languages of Old Europe (a term sometimes used for Europe between 7,000 and
3,000 B.C.) and the languages of the modern world, and we cannot yet translate the Old European script.
Scholars have deciphered other ancient languages, such as Sumerian, Akkadian, and Babylonian, which
used the cuneiform script, because of the fortuitous discovery of bilingual inscriptions. When cuneiform
tablets were first discovered in the 18th century, scholars could not decipher them. Then inscriptions found

in Iran at the end of the 18th century provided a link: these inscriptions were written in cuneiform and in

two other ancient languages, Old Persian and New Elamite – languages that had already been deciphered.
It took several decades, but scholars eventually translated the ancient cuneiform script via the more
familiar Old Persian language.

Similarly, the hieroglyphic writing of the Egyptians remained a mystery until French troops

unearthed the famous Rosetta stone in the late 18th century. The stone carried the same message written in

ancient Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphs, and Egyptian hieratic, a simplified form of hieroglyphs. The Rosetta
stone thwarted scholars’ efforts for several decades until the early 19th century when several key

hieroglyphic phrases were decoded using the Greek inscriptions. Unfortunately, we have no Old European
Rosetta stone to chart correspondences between Old European script and the languages that replaced it.

The incursions of Indo-European tribes into Old Europe from the late 5th to the early 3rd millennia

B.C. caused a linguistic and cultural discontinuity. These incursions disrupted the Old European sedentary
farming lifestyle that had existed for 3,000 years. As the Indo-Europeans encroached on Old Europe from
the east, the continent underwent upheavals. These severely affected the Balkans, where the Old European
cultures abundantly employed script. The Old European way of life deteriorated rapidly, although pockets of
Old European cultural remained for several millennia. The new peoples spoke completely different
languages belonging to the Indo-European linguistic family. The Old European language or languages, and
the script used to write them, declined and eventually vanished.

<b>Question 51. What is the main topic of the passage?</b>

<i><b>Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct </b></i>
<i><b>answer to each of the questions from 61 to 70.</b></i>

Industrialization came to the United State after 1790 as North American entrepreneurs increased

productivity by reorganizing work and building factories. These innovations in manufacturing <b>boosted</b>
output and living standards to an unprecedented extent; the average per capita wealth increased by nearly
1 percent per year – 30 percent over the course of a generation. Goods that had once been luxury items
became part of everyday life.

The impressive gain in output stemmed primarily from the way in which workers made goods, since
the 1790's, North American entrepreneurs – even without technological improvements – had broadened
the scope of the outwork system that mace manufacturing more efficient by distributing materials to a
succession of workers who each performed a single step of the production process. For example, during the
1820's and 1830's the shoe industry greatly expanded the scale and extend of me outwork system. Tens of
thousands of rural women, paid according to the amount they produced, fabricated the "uppers" of shoes,
which were bound to the soles by wage-earning journeymen shoemakers in dozens of Massachusetts
towns, whereas previously journeymen would have made the enduring shoe. This system of production
made the employer a powerful "shoe boss" and eroded workers' control over the pace and conditions of
labor. However, it also dramatically increased the output of shoes while cutting their price.

For tasks that were not suited to the outwork system, entrepreneurs created an even more
important new organization, the modem factory, which used power-driven machines and assembly-line
techniques to turn out large quantities of well-made goods. As early as 1782 the <b>prolific Delaware inventor</b>
Oliver Evans had built a highly automated, laborsaving flour mill driven by water power. His machinery lifted
the grain to the top of the mill, cleaned it as it fell into containers known as hoppers, ground the grain into
flour, and then conveyed the flour back to the top of the mill to allow it to cool as it descended into barrels.
Subsequently, manufacturers made use of new improved stationary steam engines to power their mills.
This new technology enabled them to build factories in the nation's largest cities, taking advantage of urban
concentrations of inexpensive labor, good transportation networks, and eager customers.
