INTRODUCTION
Rationale
English literature is an interesting subject which provides us a broad view
of England with the trandition culture, and people within a concrete social
and historical context.
The life and strange surprizing adventures of Robinson Crusoe is a novel
by Daniel Defoe, first published in 1719, and sometimes regarded as the
first novel in English. It was also considered one of the most widely
published books in history( behind some of the scrared texts). It has been
attracting many attentions of readers since the day it was published, and
continues to be highly regarded to this day. I am one of its readers. That the
reason why I choose Daniel Defoe and one of his best-known novels
Robinson Crusoe for my assignment.


Method of study
To have highest mark in this assignment, I don’t mind searching, reading
many diffirent books and sources of materials relating to writer Daniel
Defoe, novel Robinson Crusoe, and English literature as well.

In the assignment, I have analysed the the prominent characteristic traits
of Robinson base on his actions, his life condition in an uninhabitant island.
Social, historical, literature background
The eightenth century was the period of development of science and
culture : Isaac Newton’s discoveries in field of physic, Adam Smith’s
economic theories and the development of English painting. And also was
the most stormy periods of English history.Great Britain rapidly grew into a
capitalist country and the English bourgeois became one of the ruling
classes.This century is known as the period of Englighment. In England, the
period of Englighment followed the bourgeois revolution. The fanous
Englishteners such as: Daniel Defoe, Samuel Richardson, Jonathan Swift,
ect.
Design of the study
The assignment divided into three main parts:
The introduction includes the rationale, method of study, social,
historical, litarature background in general and design of the study.
The discussion consists of background of Daniel Defoe, summary the
context, and specially the prominent chacteristic traits of Robinson.

The last one is the conclusion.

DISCUSSION
Background of Daniel Defoe
Daniel Defoe was born in 1660 in England, he was the son of James Foe,
a butcher. He studied at Charles Morton’s Academy, London. Although his
father intended him for ministry, he joined into politics and trade, travelling
extensively in Europe. In the early 1680s he was a commission merchant in
Cornhill but went bankcrupt in 1691. In 1684 he married Mary Tuffley, they
had two sons and five daughters.
In the early 90s he turned to literatute. In 1697 he published “An essay on
projects” a typical enlightener’s work in which he suggested all kinds of
reforms in different spheres of social life. In 1972 he wrote his famous
pamphlet “ the shortest way with Dissenters”. Defoe was arrested in May
1703. In prison he wrote “ Hymn to the Pillory”(1703). The poem was sold
in streets, the audience drank to his health while he stood in the pillory and
read aloud his verses. Defoe achieved literary immortality when in April
1719 he published Robinson Crusoe. He also wrote many other novels,

above is one of the few. Death came when he at the age of 71. On 26 April
1731, at his lodgings in Ropemaker’s Alley, Moorfields.
Summary the context
The story told about The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of
Robinson Crusoe who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an
uninhabitant Island on the coast of America, near the mouth of the Great
River of Oroonoque. The story opens with a narration of Robinson’s youth
in England. He escape from home against the wishes of his parents, to sail
from Queens Dock in Hull on asea voyage in September,1651. After a storm
his ship was wrecked. This curse couldn’t make he change his mind, he
continued taking part in another adventure. This journey too ended in
desaster as his ship was taken over by Sale pirates, having no other try he
became the slave of a Moor. After a rather long time worked as a slave,
Crusoe managed to escape with a boat and a boy named Xury, later with the
help of a captain of a Portuguese ship, Crusoe became owner of a platation.
He joined an expedition to bring slaves from Africa, but his ship one more
time was wrecked in a storm. His companions all die, He was battered by a
huge wave as he struggled to make it to an unknown island. From this day
on, he started to build a fenced-inhabitaion and cave. He hunted, grew corn,
learned to make pottery, he kept calendar by making marks in a wooden
cross, ect. After twenty five years lived in this island he discovered native
cannibals occationally visited the island to kill and eat prisoners. Two
