READING : (1,5ms) Read the passage below and do the tasks: Like several great inventions, Dr Percy Spencer made his most famous discovery by accident. He was testing a new radar technology called “magnetron” in a laboratory in 1946 when the candy bar in his pocket started to cook. This interested him, so he put some corn next to the magnetron – and that cooked, too! The next day , Dr Spencer and a colleague placed an egg near the magnetron. Dr Spencer’s curious colleague took a step closer to check the egg- just in time for it to explode and cover his face! Fortunately, he wasn’t seriously hurt by the cooked egg. After a short time, the company Dr. Spencer worked for was trying to find a more controlled way to use this microwave energy to cook food. In 1947, the first microwave oven became available. It was almost two meters tall and weighed over 350 kilos! At first , the oven was only used by restaurants, railroad cars, and other places where people needed large quantities of food cooked quickly. But not everyone liked them . Microwave cooking didn’t turn meat brown and left French fries soft and pale. In fact, the head chef of the company that produced the microwave oven left his job because the director wanted him to use a microwave! Finally, in 1966, technology became advanced enough to produce microwaves for everyday domestic use. By then, they were much smaller and easier to control. Nowadays, millions of homes all over the world have one of these appliances. You can use them for heating a cup of coffee or preparing a meal. (3) Tapescript Galileo was one of the first modern scientists. He was born in Pi Sa, Italy, in 1564. He studied philosophy, mathematics and astronomy. He was very interested in the way the earth and other planets move around the sun. He was famous for his study of how things fall. Before, people used to think that heavy things always fell faster than light things. He did experiments about this problem and discovered that both heavy things and light things fell at the same speed. Many religious people did not agree with him because his scientific ideas were different from theirs. He even went to prison for a while; but no one could stop him from thinking. He continued to look for scientific answers.
