Lễ Vượt qua kéo dài 8 ngày bắt đầu từ ngày 15 đến ngày 22 tháng Nisan. Thời Đức Giêsu, bữa cơm lễ Vượt qua (Seder) được sửa soạn từ trưa ngày 14 tháng Nisan, và người Do thái không ăn bánh dậy men trong vòng 7 ngày. Ngoài ra, mỗi gia đình còn giết một con chiên hiến tế tại đền thờ.
