Part 2 : Reading Comprehension (1.5 marks)
Read the text and answer the questions below.
Modern industrial robots are true marvels of engineering. A robot at the size of a normal person
can easily carry a load of over one hundred pounds and move it very quickly with a repeatability
of ±0.006 inches. Furthermore, these robots can do that 24 hours a day for years with no failures.
Although they are programmable in many applications, especially in automatic manufacturing
industries, they are programmed once and then repeat exactly the same task for years.
Questions:
1. What is the text about?
________________________________________________________________________
2. According to the text, how heavy can a robot at the size of a normal person carry?
________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________
3. How long can these robots operate without failures?
________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
Part 3: Grammar and Structure (2.0 marks)
1. Combine these sentences into a complex one (1.0 marks)

a. Nylon is self-lubricating. It is a hard, tough thermoplastic.

Mechanisms are an important part of everyday life. They (1) ______ us to do simple things like
switch on lights, turn taps, and open doors. They also make it possible to use escalators and lifts,
(2) ______ in cars, and fly from continent to continent.
Mechanisms play a vital role in (3)________. While many industrial processes have electronic
control (4)________, it is still mechanisms that deliver the power to do the work. They provide
the (5) _________ to press steel sheets into car body panels, to lift large components from place
to place, to force plastic through (6)__________ to make pipes.
All mechanisms involve some kind of motion. The four basic kinds of motion are:
(7)__________: Wheels, gears, and rollers involve rotary movement.
(8)__________: The pendulum of a clock oscillates – it swings backwards and forwards.
Part 5: Translation (2.0 marks)
1. Traslate the following text into Vietnamese (1.5 marks)
In engineering, powerful laser beams can be focused on a small area. These beams can heat,
melt, or vaporize material in a very precise way. They can be used for drilling diamonds, cutting

complex shapes in materials from plastics to steel, for spot welding and for surfacing techniques,
such as hardening aircraft engine turbine blades.
