DS3 Fiber Loop Converter
Description
The DS3 Fiber Loop Converter (DS3 FLC) is an alternative to high bit-rate DS3 multi-
plexers, allowing an economical last mile DS3 transport or a point of presence hand off.
The DS3 FLC is a plug and play system that can be configured to maximize facilities
utilized for point-to-point or point-to-multipoint topologies and can be optioned for 1:1
protection. The DS3 FLC supports the following applications:
• DS3 Hicaps
• DS3 Point of Presence (POP) Hand-off
• DS3 Video Transport
• DS3 ATM Transport
The DS3 FLC is a single, modular system. All functions are integrated onto a single
printed circuit board. The modular system eliminates common equipment, reduces
spare inventory costs and simplifies circuit provisioning and installation. Unlike M1/3
multiplexers, there is better utilization for transporting a clear channel DS3. A maxi-
mum of four protected systems or eight unprotected systems can be hubbed out of one
universal eight position rack mount chassis.
The DS3 FLC can be installed anywhere in the network: a central office (CO), a con-
trolled environmental vault (CEV), a hut, an outside plant cabinet, or at the customer
premises. The same DS3 FLC module is interchangeable for the central office terminal
and remote terminal and for either working or protect channels. One module fits all
locations and applications making troubleshooting easy and keeping spare inventory
costs to a minimum.

The DS3 FLC can be installed in a variety of universal chassis mounting options. At the
remote end, the FLC customer premises wall mount chassis is perfect for handing off
DS3 hicaps to end users. All four slots can be dedicated to DS3 FLCs to provide either
two protected or two unprotected DS3 hicap circuits. ADC’s two position rack mount
chassis houses either one protected or one unprotected DS3 circuit. The universal eight
position chassis will accommodate four protected DS3s or eight unprotected DS3s. A
fully configured unprotected DS3 system is the ideal solution for distance learning
applications or DS3 ATM transport. Any combination of ADC Dual Fiber Loop Convert-
ers, Quad Fiber Loop Converters and DS3 Fiber Loop Converters can be deployed in the
universal chassis allowing the user to mix services and enhance system flexibility.

Applications
The DS3 FLC is transparent to DS3 frame or format; clear channel DS3
hicaps are a reality. Whether the DS3 is DS2 channelized or a single DS3
rate video channel, the DS3 FLC will transport the signal intact.
The DS3 FLC uses SONET multiplexing techniques to provide a
smooth transition to SONET networks. The DS3 is mapped
using the industry standard (TR-TSY-00253) mapping of a
DS3 into an STS-1.

SMDS allows service providers to meet the evolving wide area data connectivity needs of
business customers. The DS3 FLC supports the transmission of SMDS service through
the network. Along with the ADC Kentrox Switched
Multimegabit Data Service Unit (SMDSU), ADC offers you
a complete solution for access and transport of SMDS
service at both the 1.5 Mbps and 45 Mbps
network interface.
The ADC Kentrox SMDSU:
• Supports access classes of 1-5 from 4 Mbps
to 34 Mbps
• Performs level 1 and level 2 SMDS packet
processing
• Converts DTE signal to DS1 or DS3 format
• Is an integral DSU/CSU
